RESUMEN
"Three scenarios of future mortality trends are presented for all countries of the European Economic Area. The high scenario assumes a considerable decline in mortality rates. Consequently life expectancy at birth will continue to increase at about the same rate as during the last decades.... In the low scenario only a small decline in death rates is assumed. This scenario assumes that there will be no convergence between countries. Moreover the current differences between male and female mortality are assumed to persist."

PIP: "This article opens with a brief review of the trends in life expectancy and in mortality rates by age in the Netherlands. The most striking development in recent years is the continuous rise of life expectancy for men and the stagnation for women. A few methodological issues are discussed, such as selection processes and the possible use in forecasts of death rates by cause. Subsequently some important determinants of mortality and expert opinions, especially on future longevity, as well as hypotheses in forecasts of other developed Western countries, are reviewed." "As in other developed countries, the number of elderly people is growing rapidly in the Netherlands.... Compared to younger people, little is known about household formation of the elderly people. Almost two thirds [are] still part of a family (with spouse and/or children). One third live alone. Only about 4.5% of the elderly people cohabit with other people (for instance relatives).... The analysis points out that the physical and mental health of people who live alone is worse than those of people who live with spouse or partner. It also shows that the health of people with a high level of education is better than the health of those with little education." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"The most urbanized provinces of the Netherlands are North-Holland, South-Holland and Utrecht. In these provinces, the population density (number of inhabitants per square kilometer of land) is five times that of the Northern provinces and Zeeland.... According to the Regional Population Forecasts 1994, up to 2015 all the provinces are expected to have a positive population growth. The population of the youngest province Flevoland will grow most rapidly: by about 50%. The population growth, both in relative and absolute terms, will be small in the Northern provinces and Zeeland (in the South West)." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"On the basis of monthly observations in the first eight months, annual totals of births, deaths, marriages and migration were estimated for 1994 [for the Netherlands]. The number of births is expected to be slightly higher and the number of deaths somewhat lower than in 1993. The difference in immigration is more important: the inflow will be much lower than last year. Emigration will only be slightly higher. Due to the decrease in immigration total population growth in 1994 will be smaller than in 1993." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"Since 1960 the marital status of single parents has shifted strongly in the Netherlands. Fewer single parents are widows or widowers and more are divorced. At the moment about half of single parents are divorced. The proportion of never-married single parents has grown only slightly." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"In the Netherlands net [immigration] is larger for men than for women. Recently the mean age of the migrants has risen (at the moment the maximum is around 25 years). Most migrants are not married. The demographic characteristics of the migrants differ from the Dutch population.... Although external migration slows down the ageing of the Dutch population, it does not stop this process." "In the last three decades, about one fifth of the population growth in the Netherlands was due to external migration. At the moment this is about one third and is still increasing. After 2020 mortality will be higher than fertility, but the positive net migration will cause some further growth of the population. This situation will last until about 2030. Thereafter the number of inhabitants will decrease." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Trends in life expectancy in the Netherlands are reviewed, using mortality data from the 1992 official Netherlands population forecasts. Data are presented by age and sex. "A main conclusion is that mortality in recent years has developed more favourably for men than for women." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"In this article determinants of mortality [in the Netherlands] are studied.... The main results are the following: For all ages women have lower mortality risks than men.... Married people live longer than those who are not. However, the cause is not certain.... In large cities mortality rates are higher than in small towns (especially due to diseases of the lungs and to narcotics, alcohol and violent causes of death). People with a high socio-economic status have lower mortality risks than those with a low status." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

PIP: The impact of female labor force participation on fertility in the Netherlands is analyzed. The focus is on the difficulties of conducting such an analysis in the absence of panel data. Data are from the 1988 Netherlands Fertility Survey and concern women aged 18-37. The results suggest that there is a significant negative effect of work on expected and actual family size at all ages. (SUMMARY IN ENG)^ieng

"In this article aspects of the development of the institutional population in the Netherlands are described. During the eighties there has been a moderate decrease in numbers due to a change in attitudes and policies. Because of ideological and financial reasons, governments are inclined to institutionalise fewer old (and disabled) people and to provide more care by other means such as home-support. However, simulations lead to the conclusion, that particularly as a consequence of the ageing of the population, the demand of care is growing quite fast.... Taking all factors into account, one may expect that the number of institutionalised people will not change much in the near future." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"This article mainly sketches the profile of voluntarily childless women in the Netherlands. Data from the 1982 Netherlands Fertility Survey among 18-37 [year-]old women and from the 1985 follow up survey among the same women are used. It appears that fewer than 10% of the respondents can be classified as voluntarily childless...and a substantial number of the women changed their opinion about their (future) family size in the period 1982-1985. Young women in particular seem to postpone an ultimate decision...." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"A multivariate analysis of the 1985 Quality of Life-Survey among Surinam and Antillean born persons in the Netherlands reveals some telling results about their fertility. For both groups a low current number of children is associated with a high educational level, no religion, a long stay in the Netherlands, an urban environment and--only in the case of females--employment. To a lesser extent, the same holds true for education attended (partly) in the Netherlands and having a Dutch partner." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

PIP: A multivariate analysis of the 1984 Quality of Life-Survey, which was held among Turkish and Moroccan heads of households in the Netherlands, shows that their fertility is affected by factors concerning their native country as well as by some aspects of life in the Netherlands. A low current number of children is associated with a higher education in the native country, an urban background and no strong commitment to Islam. In addition, the marital status at immigration and the nationality of the woman also show a particular correlation with the fertility. Some socio-cultural characteristics such as the woman's work and house-ownership also have a certain association with the family size. The likelihood of further declines in fertility among Turks and Moroccans living in the Netherlands is discussed.^ieng

PIP: This article contains the results of a multivariate analysis on data in the 1982 Netherlands Fertility Survey. Dependent variables are woman's age at 1st marriage and her age at 1st birth; independent variables are such social characteristics as education, religion, political preference, occupation, and income. The applied techniques are analysis of variance and multiple classification analysis. Two groups of women were analyzed separately because of a potential distortion by the age variable; groups consisted of women born between 1945-49 and women born between 1950-54. Results are as follows. 1) The variation in age at 1st marriage and age at 1st birth accounted for by the social variables is 17 and 23% respectively for the oldest group and 20 and 26% for the youngest group. 2) The level and duration of woman's education and their partners are by far the most important social variables; these variables show a strong positive correlation with the demographic variables. 3) Woman's occupation and income also have a considerable effect on the dependent variables; the other items have only a weak effect or are insignificant. 4) Most social variables have the strongest effect in the younger cohort of women. 5) Before adjustment, age at 1st marriage accounted for 50% (1945-49) and 40% (1950-54) of the variation in age at 1st birth; after adjustment for the social variables, 34 and 22% explained variation respectively still remained. 6) A comparison with the 1977 Netherlands Fertility Survey reveals that the effect of the woman's education on age at 1st birth has risen; the effect of age at 1st marriage on the same variable has decreased.
