RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Several guidelines recommend that patients with chronic kidney disease treated by haemodialysis (HD) take care of their own arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The dialysis nurse plays an important role in the development of such self-care behaviours. A very small number of instruments are available to assess self-care behaviours with AVF in Turkey. OBJECTIVE: Cultural adaptation and psychometric testing of the Turkish version of the scale of assessment of self-care behaviours with arteriovenous fistula in haemodialysis (ASBHD-AVF) patients. DESIGN: Cross-sectional validation study. PARTICIPANTS AND MEASUREMENTS: This study was conducted involving 160 patients in the Bolu region in Turkey. The guidelines provided by Sousa and Rojjanasrirat were taken into account in the scale translation, adaptation and validation process. Validity was analysed through content validity and construct validity. The latter was measured through principal component analysis with varimax rotation, considering only factor loadings of 0.30 or larger. Reliability analysis was based on internal consistency measured by Cronbach's α. RESULTS: A two-factor structure was extracted explaining 59.01% of the total variance. Cronbach's α was 0.91, 0.85 and 0.84 for the overall scale, the self-care in prevention of complications subscale and the self-care in management of signs and symptoms subscale, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The Turkish version of the scale of ASBHD-AVF patients is a reliable and valid instrument and can therefore be used.

RESUMEN

Social support is regarded as a complex construct which has long been suggested to have direct and buffering effects on patients' wellbeing and emotional adjustment to cancer. Cross-sectional and prospective studies show a positive association between perceived social support and psychological adjustment following cancer treatment. Research findings suggest that the evidence for the relationship between social support and cancer progression is sufficiently strong. This report points out the importance of social support in cancer and provides recommendations for health care professionals.

RESUMEN

This research involved a descriptive study with the goal of examining the attitudes of 145 Turkish nursing students studying toward ageism and the factors affecting ageism views. A Student Description Form and the Ageism Attitude Scale (AAS) were the data collection instruments used in this study. Statistical evaluation of the data included percentage, median and Kruskal Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney U-test. The average age of student participants was 20.10 ± 3.52; further 37.9% of these students were 1st year nursing students, 25.5% of were 2nd year, 11.7% were 3rd year, and 24.8% were 4th year students. Of the students in this study 63.4% had completed coursework in elderly health as part of undergraduate study. Average scores on the AAS students were 84.01 ± 7.61 points. Most female students who completed classes related to elderly health, either lived with or planned to live with at least one elderly parent after starting a family or already experienced having an elderly relative in their home. These students tended to have positive attitudes toward aging.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this descriptive study was to determine breast self examination (BSE) knowledge and practice of middle-aged females. METHODOLOGY: The study population comprised over 40 year old women (n=252) and nurses (n=29) working in a total of seven family health centers in Bolu, Turkey. Data were obtained through face to face interviews from September 2007 to January 2008. RESULTS: A highly significant relation was identified between increasing age in women and lack of BSE and improper practice of BSE steps (p<0.05), and between a higher degree of education and presence of breast cancer in the family and knowledge and practice of BSE (p<0.05). On the other hand, it was found that 93.1% of the nurses involved in the study practiced BSE. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study revealed that educational programs aimed at increasing older women's knowledge level of BSE are required and nurses, as medical professionals meeting women in various environments, can play a key role in increasing women's awareness about breast health.
