RESUMEN

AIM: this study was conducted to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of 6 root canal filling materials and a negative control agent against 18 strains of bacteria isolated from infected root canals of primary molar teeth using agar diffusion assay. MATERIALS: Aloevera with sterile water Zinc oxide and Eugenol, Zinc oxide-Eugenol with aloevera, Calcium hydroxide and sterile water, Calcium hydroxide with sterile water and aloevera, Calcium hydroxide and Iodoform (Metapex) and Vaseline (Control). MIC and MBC of aloevera was calculated. RESULTS: All materials except Vaseline showed varied antimicrobial activity against the test bacterias. The zones of inhibition were ranked into 4 inhibition categories based on the proportional distribution of the data. All the 18 bacterial isolates were classified under 2 groups based on Gram positive and Gram negative aerobes. Statistical analysis was carried out to compare the antimicrobial effectiveness between materials tested with each of the bacterial groupings. CONCLUSION: Aloevera + Sterile Water was found to have superior antimicrobial activity against most of the microorganisms followed by ZOE + Aloevera, calcium hydroxide + Aloevera, ZOE, calcium hydroxide, Metapex in the descending order and Vaseline showed no inhibition.

RESUMEN

AIM: Mucocele is a common lesion of the oral mucosa that results from alterations of the minor salivary glands due to mucous accumulation, causing swelling. Conventional surgical treatment was planned for these lesions in a group of children and the success rates of the therapy during the transitional period from mixed to permanent dentition were assessed with a series of follow-ups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A series of 23 cases of mucocele was observed in children under 10 years of age. Clinically the lesions consisted of a soft, bluish and transparent cystic swelling which normally resolved spontaneously and reappeared after rupture in few days. All cases were treated by conventional surgical procedure with excision of minor salivary glands and underwent a 3-year follow-up. RESULTS: Out of the 23 cases, 19 (82.6%) were in the lower lip, 2 (8.6%) in the cheek, 1 (4.3%) in the retromolar area and 1 (4.3%) in the upper lip. Those in the lower lip, 15 (79%) were away from the midline and 4 (21%) at midline. One (4.3%) recurrence was seen at the 6-month follow-up. After 3 years, recurrence rate remained the same. CONCLUSION: Conventional surgical excision with removal of affected minor salivary glands in paediatric patients is a definite treatment for mucocele.

RESUMEN

Although impaction of a permanent tooth is rarely diagnosed during the mixed dentition period, an impacted central incisor is usually diagnosed accurately when there is delay in the eruption of tooth. In this article, the impacted incisor was moved into it's proper position with surgical exposure and orthodontic traction, after which it showed good stability.

RESUMEN

The purpose of present study was to compare the effect of 15 seconds & 60 seconds of etching of young permanent teeth in vitro with 50% phosphoric acid gel using scanning electron microscope. 25 pairs of enamel surfaces selected for the study were divided into 3 experimental groups. The control group consisted of unetched enamel surfaces. In Group II, the effect of 50% phosphoric acid gel was compared with 37% phosphoric acid solution for 15 seconds whereas in group III, the effect of 15 seconds & 60 seconds of etching with 50% phosphoric acid gel was compared. The degree of etching pattern was evaluated by using scoring pattern from 1-3. Results showed no significant difference between the etching pattern obtained with the use of 37% solution and 50% gel for 15 seconds. But it was observed that etching with 50% for 15 seconds resulted in equal or even an enhanced etching pattern as compared to the pattern obtained in 60 seconds with 50% phosphoric acid gel.
