RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and nanoleakage (NL) of universal adhesives on eroded dentine, immediately and after four years of water storage. METHODS: Sixty-four sound human molars were distributed into 16 groups according to (1) Dentine surface (sound and eroded dentine); (2) dimethyl sulfoxide application (with or without); (3) Application mode (etch-and-rinse or self-etch) and (4) Storage time (immediate and four years). One mild universal adhesive was used (Scotchbond Universal). The restoration was then performed with a composite resin and the specimens were sectioned into resin-dentine bonded sticks. Resin-dentine bonded sticks were tested (immediately and after four years of water storage) for µTBS (0.5 mm/min) or used to assess NL. Data on µTBS and NL were analyzed using four-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Only the 3-way cross-product interaction 'substrate vs DMSO vs time' was statistically significant (p = 0.007). Eroded dentine showed a lower mean of µTBS and a higher mean of NL values than sound dentine. However, when DMSO was applied, no significant decrease of µTBS or NL values was observed after four years of water storage, regardless of adhesive strategies, or dentine evaluated, when compared to immediate results. SIGNIFICANCE: Water-based DMSO pre-treatments not only prevent degradation of MDP-containing simplified adhesives but also serve as a potential alternative to improve long-term bonding properties to eroded dentine. The versatility of using a single pre-treatment for both self-etch or etch-and-rinse bonding to eroded dentin may facilitate future clinical applications.

RESUMEN

Self-adhesive resin cements (RCs) activate matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and cathepsin-related collagen degradation, and gallic acid (GA) inhibits the activity of both MMPs and cysteine cathepsins. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the setting time, biaxial flexural strength, and Vickers hardness of self-adhesive RCs after the addition of two different concentrations of GA. RelyX U200 (3M ESPE) and Panavia SA (Kuraray) were modified with 0.5 and 1 wt% GA. The setting time of five samples in each RC group was assessed using a thermocouple apparatus as described in the ISO 4049 test. Biaxial flexure strength was measured using a universal testing machine until failure. Vickers hardness was measured with three randomized indentations on the surface of each resin disc. RCs without GA were used as control. Data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). The setting times ranged from 2.4 to 4.6 min for RelyX and from 4.9 to 6.0 min for Panavia. The biaxial flexure strength ranged from 76.5 to 109.7 MPa for RelyX and from 73.3 to 108.2 MPa for Panavia. Vickers hardness values ranged from 41.6 to 58.6 for RelyX and 27.2 to 33.6 for Panavia. The addition of 0.5 and 1 wt% GA to improve durability of resin-dentin bonds had no adverse effects on setting time, whereas the biaxial flexure strength and Vickers hardness values for the tested materials were significantly reduced.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of a novel silica (SiO2 )-based nanocoating approach to extend the superficial integrity of current composites. Cylindrical discs (7 × 2 mm) were produced from nanohybrid and nanofilled composites. Specimens in control groups were not coated, but SiO2 nanocoating was performed on specimens in experimental groups (n = 8). Specimens were stored for 24 h in distilled water at 37°C (baseline) and then artificially aged for 15, 90, or 180 d in a low-pH staining solution. Surface roughness (Ra) was measured using a profilometer, and a goniometer was used to determine surface free energy (SFE). Color change was evaluated by a reflectance spectrophotometer, applying the color distance metric, ΔE00 , according to the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) L*a*b* coordinates. Data were subjected to repeated-measures anova and the Tukey post-hoc test. Composites presented visually perceptible color changes (ΔE00  > 0.81) as early as 15 d of aging, with significantly higher ΔE00 values recorded over time. Nanocoating with SiO2 significantly reduced the SFE of composites at all storage times, and significantly lower Ra values were identified after aging. Nanohybrid and nanofilled composites were susceptible to substantial hydrolytic superficial degradation and staining, which was dramatically attenuated by the proposed SiO2 nanocoating approach. Nanocoating effectively lowered the SFE of composites, thus minimizing water-composite interactions, which contributed to reduced superficial deterioration and lower stain susceptibility over time.
