RESUMEN

Birds, including canaries and other birds, have become increasingly popular as pets. Bird fairs, where breeders gather and show their production in a championship setting, present a setting for possible Salmonella spp. contamination and transmission. Therefore, this study estimated the rate of Salmonella spp. isolation from cage papers, located in the bottom of cages of exotic pet birds, including canaries. Collected Salmonella isolates were used to determine the antimicrobial resistance profile to 52 antibiotics and 17 commercial disinfectants, based on pure or a mixture of acids, alcohols, aldehydes, alkalis, halogens, peroxygen, and quaternary ammonium compounds. The samples consisted of 774 cage papers taken in the 2015 Argentinean canary breeder championship, pooling three cage papers into one sterile sampling bag. Only one pool of the cage papers was positive for Salmonella spp. (0.4%), which belonged to the sample from three frill canary cages. Two strains of Salmonella serotype Glostrup were isolated, which were only resistant to sulfonamides and erythromycin and sensitive to alkali-based product PL301 AS. Although the rate of Salmonella spp. isolation from cage papers in an Argentinean canary breeder championship is low, it should not be discounted because Salmonella ser. Glostrup can be a source of human Salmonella outbreaks and they show high resistance to disinfecting products.

RESUMEN

In this work, we propose a model-based deep learning reconstruction algorithm for optical projection tomography (ToMoDL), to greatly reduce acquisition and reconstruction times. The proposed method iterates over a data consistency step and an image domain artefact removal step achieved by a convolutional neural network. A preprocessing stage is also included to avoid potential misalignments between the sample center of rotation and the detector. The algorithm is trained using a database of wild-type zebrafish (Danio rerio) at different stages of development to minimise the mean square error for a fixed number of iterations. Using a cross-validation scheme, we compare the results to other reconstruction methods, such as filtered backprojection, compressed sensing and a direct deep learning method where the pseudo-inverse solution is corrected by a U-Net. The proposed method performs equally well or better than the alternatives. For a highly reduced number of projections, only the U-Net method provides images comparable to those obtained with ToMoDL. However, ToMoDL has a much better performance if the amount of data available for training is limited, given that the number of network trainable parameters is smaller.

RESUMEN

Continuous ultrasound is recognized for its thermal effect and use in the tissue repair process. However, there is controversy about its dosage and efficacy. This study used infrared thermography, a non-invasive technique, to measure the short-term thermal effect of 3 MHz continuous ultrasound vs. a placebo, referencing the intensity applied. It was a single-blind, randomized clinical trial of 60 healthy volunteers (19-24 years old) divided into three equal groups. Group 1:1 W/cm2 for 5 min; Group 2: 0.5 W/cm2 for 10 min; and Group 3: the placebo for 5 min. The temperature was recorded through five thermographic images per patient: pre- and post-application, 5, 10, and 15 min later. After statistical analysis, a more significant decrease in temperature (p<0.05 ) was observed in the placebo group compared with the remaining groups after the application of continuous ultrasound. Group 1 was the one that generated the highest significant thermal effect (p<0.001), with an increase of 3.05 °C at 15 min, compared with the other two groups. It is concluded that to generate a thermal effect in the muscle, intensities of ≥1 W/cm2 are required, since the dosage maintained a temperature increase for more than 5 min.

RESUMEN

This is the first viral metagenomic analysis of grapevine conducted in Mexico. During the summer of 2021, 48 plants displaying virus-like symptoms were sampled in Queretaro, an important grapevine-producing area of Mexico, and analyzed for the presence of viruses via high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The results of HTS were verified by real-time RT-PCR following a standardized testing scheme (Protocol 2010). Fourteen different viruses were identified, including grapevine asteroid mosaic-associated virus (GAMaV), grapevine Cabernet Sauvignon reovirus (GCSV), grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), grapevine fleck virus (GFkV), grapevine Pinot gris virus (GPGV), grapevine red globe virus (GRGV), grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated virus (GRSPaV), grapevine rupestris vein feathering virus (GRVFV), grapevine Syrah virus 1 (GSyV-1), grapevine virus B (GVB), and grapevine leafroll-associated viruses 1, 2, 3, 4 (GLRaV1, 2, 3, 4). Additionally, divergent variants of GLRaV4 and GFkV, and a novel Enamovirus-like virus were discovered. This is the first report of GAMaV, GCSV, GLRaV4, GPGV, GRGV, GRVFV, and GSyV-1 infecting grapevines in Mexico; the impact of these pathogens on production is unknown.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Obex® may be helpful in reducing body weight and fat. The current study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Obex® in the treatment of overweight and obese subjects. METHODS: A double-blind, randomised, controlled phase III clinical trial was conducted involving 160 overweight and obese subjects (BMI ≥ 25.0 and < 40 kg/m2) aged 20 to 60 years, who received Obex® (n = 80) and placebo (n = 80) plus non-pharmacological treatment (physical activity and nutritional counseling). One sachet of Obex® or placebo were administered before the two main meals each day for 6 months. In addition to anthropometric measurements and blood pressure, fasting plasma and 2 h glucose levels during the oral glucose tolerance test, lipid profile, insulin, liver enzymes, creatinine, and uric acid (UA) were determined, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) beta-cell function (HOMA-ß) were assessed and insulin sensitivity (IS) was calculated with three indirect indexes. RESULTS: After 3 months of Obex®, 48.3% of the participants (28/58) achieved complete success in reducing both weight and waist circumference by greater than or equal to 5% from baseline, as opposed to 26.0% (13/50) of individuals receiving placebo (p = 0.022). Compared to baseline, at 6 months no differences were found between the groups concerning anthropometric and biochemical measurements, except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) levels, which were higher in subjects receiving Obex® compared to those receiving placebo (p = 0.030). After 6 months of treatment, both groups showed reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels (p < 0.012) compared to baseline value. However, only those intake Obex® showed reduced insulin concentrations and HOMA-IR, improved IS (p < 0.05), and decreased creatinine and UA levels (p < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of Obex® together with lifestyle changes increased HDL-c, contributed to a rapid reduction of weight and waist circumference, as well as improved insulin homeostasis, which did not occur in the placebo group, and appears to be safe as an adjunct at conventional obesity treatment. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical trial protocol was registered in the Cuban public registry of clinical trials under code RPCEC00000267 on 17/04/2018 and also registered in the international registry of clinical trials, ClinicalTrials.gov, under code: NCT03541005 on 30/05/2018.

RESUMEN

Intralaminar thalamic nuclei, including the central medial nucleus (CMT), have been classically implicated in the control of attentional functional states such as sleep-wake transitions. In rodents, the CMT innervates large cortical and subcortical areas bilaterally, including sensorimotor regions of the cortex and striatum, but its contribution to motor function, which regularly develops in faster temporal scales than attentional states, is still far from being completely understood. Here, by using a novel behavioral protocol to evaluate bilateral coordination in rats, combined with electrophysiological recordings and optogenetic manipulations, we studied the contribution of the CMT to motor control and coordination. We found that optogenetic stimulation of the central region of the CMT produced bilateral recruitment of neural activity in the sensorimotor cortex and striatum. The same type of stimulations produced a significant increase in bilateral movement coordination of the forelimbs accompanied by a decrease in movement trajectory variability. Optogenetic inactivation of the CMT did not affect motor execution but significantly increased execution times, suggesting less interest in the task. Altogether, our results indicate that brief CMT activations create windows of synchronized bilateral cortico-striatal activity, suitable to facilitate motor coordination in temporal scales relevant for motor execution.

Introduction. It has been suggested that the social isolation due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may increase the incidence of child and adolescent sexual abuse (CASA). Objective. To compare the incidence and characteristics of medical consultations made to the Department of Gynecology due to CASA before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods. Descriptive, observational, and comparative study about suspected CASA events occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to those occurred in the previous year at a tertiary care children's hospital. Results. One hundred and twenty-two medical consultations due to suspected CASA were recorded; 78 before and 44 during the pandemic. In both groups, the most common reason for consultation at the hospital was an account of CASA and, at the Department of Gynecology in particular, the external genitalia examination. Most subjects had a normal physical examination. There was a higher prevalence of STI in the pandemic group. In addition, there were also more hospitalizations and police reports for victims protection in this group. The abuser was known to the victim in almost 90% of cases in both groups. Conclusions. During the pandemic, the total number of medical consultations to the Department of Gynecology decreased so the percentage of those due to suspected CASA was higher. However, the presence of severe lesions, STIs or pregnancy did not change

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We investigated the impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination on the performance of cytology-based and HPV-based screening for detection of cervical precancer among women vaccinated as young adults and reaching screening age. METHODS: A total of 4632 women aged 25-36 years from the Costa Rica HPV Vaccine Trial were included (2418 HPV-vaccinated as young adults and 2214 unvaccinated). We assessed the performance of cytology- and HPV-based cervical screening modalities in vaccinated and unvaccinated women to detect high-grade cervical precancers diagnosed over 4 years and the absolute risk of cumulative cervical precancers by screening results at entry. RESULTS: We detected 95 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 or worse (52 in unvaccinated and 43 in vaccinated women). HPV16/18/31/33/45 was predominant (69%) among unvaccinated participants, and HPV35/52/58/39/51/56/59/66/68 predominated (65%) among vaccinated participants. Sensitivity and specificity of cervical screening approaches were comparable between women vaccinated as young adults and unvaccinated women. Colposcopy referral rates were lower in the vaccinated group for HPV-based screening modalities, but the positive predictive value was comparable between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among women approaching screening ages, vaccinated as young adults, and with a history of intensive screening, the expected reduction in the positive predictive value of HPV testing, associated with dropping prevalence of HPV-associated lesions, was not observed. This is likely due to the presence of high-grade lesions associated with nonvaccine HPV types, which may be less likely to progress to cancer.

RESUMEN

The ocular microbiome in horses is poorly described compared to other species, and most of the information available in the literature is based on traditional techniques, which has limited the depth of the knowledge on the subject. The objective of this study was to characterize and predict the metabolic pathways of the ocular microbiome of a group of healthy horses. Conjunctival swabs were obtained from both eyes of 14 horses, and DNA extraction was performed from the swabs, followed by next generation sequencing and bioinformatics analyses employing DADA2 and PICRUSt2. A total of 17 phyla were identified, of which Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria) was the most abundant (59.88%), followed by Actinomycetota (Actinobacteria) (22.44%) and Bacteroidota (Bacteroidetes) (16.39%), totaling an average of 98.72% of the communities. Similarly, of the 278 genera identified, Massilia, Pedobacter, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Suttonella and Verticia were present in more than 5% of the samples analyzed. Both Actinobacteria and Bacteroides showed great heterogeneity within the samples. The most abundant inferred metabolic functions were related to vital functions for bacteria such as aerobic respiration, amino acid, and lipid biosynthesis.

Adrenal crisis is the most extreme presentation form of adrenal insufficiency and represents a life-threatening endocrinological emergency. This situation can be triggered by different causes including the use of CYP3A4-inducing drugs, which accelerate hydrocortisone clearance. We describe the case of an 85-year-old woman with secondary adrenal insufficiency and chronic renal disease, who presented symptoms compatible with adrenal crisis (asthenia, adynamia, severe hyponatremia associated with neurological symptoms and hypotension) nine days after the start of modafinil treatment. The clinical picture improved rapidly with the suspension of modafinil and the administration of intravenous hydrocortisone. After ruling out the possible triggering causes (infectious, ischemic, pulmonary thromboembolism and failure to take hydrocortisone), it was interpreted that modafinil precipitated the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency by increasing the steroid clearance. Modafinil has the ability to induce the activity of CYP3A4 and consequently decrease the bioavailability of hydrocortisone. We emphasize the need to adjust steroid dose replacement in subjects receiving metabolism-inducing drugs.

Two female South American coatis (Nasua nasua) kept in a zoo in Southern Germany presented with pruritus and moderate hair loss at the dorsal trunk, thigh areas and alongside the tail. Otherwise the animals showed no clinical signs. While the clinical general examination as well as cytology of dermatologic samples showed no pathologic changes, Chorioptes sp. mites could be identified in a superficial skin scraping. Two consecutive topical applications of a selamectin/sarolaner spot-on formulation 4 weeks apart lead to a complete resolution. No side effects were observed.

The clinical picture improved rapidly with the suspension of modafinil and the administration of intravenous hydrocortisone. After ruling out the possible triggering causes (infectious, ischemic, pulmonary thromboembo lism and failure to take hydrocortisone), it was interpreted that modafinil precipitated the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency by increasing the steroid clearance. Modafinil has the ability to induce the activity of CYP3A4 and consequently decrease the bioavailability of hydrocortisone. We emphasize the need to adjust steroid dose re placement in subjects receiving metabolism-inducing drugs.

RESUMEN

In parkinsonian conditions, network dynamics in the cortical and basal ganglia circuits present abnormal oscillations and periods of high synchrony, affecting the functionality of multiple striatal regions including the sensorimotor striatum. However, it is still unclear how these altered dynamics impact on sensory processing, a key feature for motor control that is severely impaired in parkinsonian patients. A major confound is that pathological dynamics in sensorimotor networks may elicit unspecific motor responses that may alter sensory representations through sensory feedback, making it difficult to disentangle motor and sensory components. To address this issue, we studied sensory processing using an anesthetized model with robust sensory representations throughout cortical and basal ganglia sensory regions and limited motor confounds in control and hemiparkinsonian rats. A general screening of sensory-evoked activity in large populations of neurons recorded in the primary sensory cortex (S1), dorsolateral striatum (DLS) and substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) revealed increased excitability and altered sensory representations in the three regions. Further analysis revealed uncoordinated population dynamics between DLS and S1/SNr. Finally, DLS lesions in hemiparkinsonian animals partially recovered population dynamics and execution in the rotarod.

RESUMEN

Many aspects of bird migration are necessarily innate.1 However, the extent of deterministic genetic control, environmental influence, and individual decision making in the control of migration remains unclear.2-8 Globally, few cases of rapid and dramatic life-history changes resulting in novel migration strategies are known. An example is latitudinal trans-hemispheric breeding colonization, whereby a subpopulation suddenly begins breeding on its non-breeding range.9-13 These life-history reversals demand concomitant changes in the timing of migration, feather molt, and breeding if the population is to remain viable.13 Cliff swallows, Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, are long-distance migrants that breed in North America and spend the non-breeding season mostly in South America.14 However, in 2015, a small population switched hemispheres by breeding successfully in Argentina,9 over 8,000 km from the nearest potential source, after presumably failed attempts.15,16 This provided a unique chance to characterize the early mechanisms of change in migratory behavior and phenology and to assess the possibility of double breeding. We tracked cliff swallows with geolocators following their second and fourth breeding seasons in Argentina, documenting inverted seasonality, three new migratory patterns and non-breeding areas (North America, Mesoamerica, and South America), and a shift of molt phenology by approximately 6 months, all possibly arising within a single generation. These birds did not practice migratory double breeding, although some spent the boreal summer in the traditional breeding range. Our data show that fundamental phenological changes occurred very rapidly during colonization and that phenotypic plasticity can underlie profound changes in the life histories of migratory birds.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two psychosocial interventions (Didactic and ACCENT) on socio-cognitive risk factors, in vulnerable Mozambican women at risk for HIV/AIDS infection. The study design was a randomized controlled trial on Mozambican women at HIV/AIDS risk (n = 150). The participants were randomized into three groups: Didactic Intervention (experimental group), ACCENT intervention (experimental group), and control group. We used an adapted version of the Women's Health Questionnaire, which includes a series of scales and questionnaires assessing psychosocial relevant dimensions to female protection towards HIV/AIDS: HIV/AIDS knowledge, condom use negotiation self-efficacy, and perceived barriers against safer sex. Both interventions were equally effective in increasing HIV/AIDS knowledge. The ACCENT intervention was especially effective in promoting condom use negotiation self-efficacy and in decreasing perceived barriers against safer sex, essential variables for sexual protection. These results support the adaptation of Western interventions to the African context.

RESUMEN

In the current research, the effects of fluid inoculum of Brevibacillus sp. B65, a plant growth promoting microorganism (PGPM), on growth of V. unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis cultivated in organoponic conditions were evaluated in comparison with traditional inorganic and organic fertilizers. Plant growth promotion of Yardlong bean was assessed through the effects of four different treatments on plant growth and development traits, as well as on crop yield. The four treatments were NPK-inorganic fertilizer (T1), organic matter alone (T2), fluid inoculum of B65 alone (T3) and inoculum supplemented with organic matter (T4). The inoculum of B65 supplemented with organic matter improved different traits of plant growth and development such as seed germination, root development, plant and leaves growth, flowering, as well as crop yield. The main impact of the inoculation mixture was on seed emergence. In the present research, it was demonstrated that biostimulation of Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis through inoculation of PGPM Brevibacillus sp. B65 supplemented with organic matter, may replace traditional organic and inorganic fertilization strategies. The nature of the positive influence of strain B65 on the legume is not well understood yet; however, it could be attributed to bacterial phytostimulation through auxin and ethylene production, as well as P mobilization. Additionally, organic matter supplementation demonstrated a stimulating effect on B65 traits. This is of utmost importance and will have a main impact on the sustainable development of agronomical practices.
