RESUMEN

PurposeTo compare the female sexual function before and during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI).MethodsRelevant studies were retrieved by online databases and manual searching reporting FSFI scores before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The methodological quality of reviewed articles was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and heterogeneity with the I2 statistic. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by random-effect meta-analyses.ResultsFour studies met the inclusion criteria reporting 1002 sexually active non-pregnant women comparing results of the 19-item FSFI. The meta-analysis of the overall FSFI score showed an SMD (95% CI) of -1.16 (-1.97 to -0.35), comparing the pandemic with the pre-pandemic scores. In addition, SMD scores for the FSFI domains were also significantly lower during the pandemic for arousal -0.80 (-1.13 to -0.48), orgasm -0.66 (-1.07 to -0.25), satisfaction -0.59 (-0.97 to -0.22), and pain -0.35 (-0.54 to -0.16), whereas there were not significant differences for desire and lubrication domains. There was a low risk of bias and the sensitivity analysis suggests that results are robust.ConclusionThe available studies showed a lower overall FSFI score during the pandemic, suggesting an increased risk of female sexual dysfunction compared to prepandemic results. Also, there were increased risks of sexual arousal, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain disorders. However, there were no alterations in the desire and the lubrication domains. Limitations are related to the heterogeneity populations, and pandemic confounding and aggravating factors.

AIM: To study the telomere length and the telomerase activity in women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: Relevant studies were searched from PubMed, Embase, and LILACS online databases and manual screening. The mean differences (MDs) or standardized MDs (SMDs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The methodological quality of included studies was evaluated with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), and heterogeneity with the I2 and Tau2 statistics. RESULTS: Six studies including 2109 non-pregnant women with (n = 1155) or without (n = 954) PCOS assessed leukocyte telomere length. There was a non-significant leukocyte telomere length difference (SMD = 0.25, 95% CI: -0.01, 0.51, p = .06, I2 = 81%, Tau2 = 0.08) comparing PCOS patients with the control group. Studied PCOS women were younger (MD = -1.39, 95% CI: -2.47, -0.31 years, I2 = 83%), and had higher body mass index (BMI; MD = 3.66, 95% CI: 2.11, 5.20 kg/m2, I2 = 94%). There were significantly higher testosterone (SMD = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.65, 1.10) and luteinizing hormone levels (SMD = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.12, 1.08) in women with PCOS as compared to controls. There was a low risk of bias and there were not sufficient studies to meta-analyze other cell types. CONCLUSIONS: Leukocyte telomere length did not differ between women with and without PCOS. Further studies with large sample sizes and including other outcomes are warranted to further substantiate the reported evidence.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed at comparing obstetric and perinatal outcomes in laboratory-tested pregnant women for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection before delivering. METHOD: We performed a comprehensive systematic review of electronic databases for studies reporting pregnant women with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection, as determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) before delivery, during the pandemic period published up to June 25, 2021. Results are reported as mean difference (MD) or odds ratio (OR) and their 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Seventeen observational studies with low to moderate risk of bias, reported on 2,769 pregnant women with a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test and 13,807 with a negative test. Pregnant women with a positive PCR test delivered at an earlier gestational age (MD -0.19; 95% CI -0.36 to -0.02 weeks), smoked less (OR 0.75; 95% CI 0.61-0.94) and were associated with higher odds for preeclampsia (OR 1.30; 95% CI 1.09-1.54), NICU admissions (OR 2.37; 95% CI 1.18-4.76), stillbirths (OR 2.70; 95% CI, 1.38-5.29), and perinatal mortality (OR 3.23; 95% CI 1.23-8.52). There were no significant differences between positive and negative tested women in terms of nulliparity, multiple pregnancies, gestational diabetes, route of delivery, labor induction, preterm birth, infant birth weight, 5 min Apgar scores < 7, small-for-gestational-age infants and fetal malformations. Eleven studies included neonatal PCR SARS-CoV-2 testing which was performed on 129 infants, of which 20 were positive. CONCLUSION: Positive SARS-CoV-2 tested pregnant women had higher odds for preeclampsia/hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, NICU admissions, stillbirths and perinatal mortality.

AIMS: To assess severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during labor and delivery with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and using immunoglobulin G and M testing to correlate with maternal and perinatal outcomes. MAIN METHODS: Pregnant women admitted for labor and delivery at two Spanish hospitals were screened for SARS-CoV-2 infection by PCR test and by detection of serum immunoglobulins G and M. Maternal and perinatal outcomes were compared in women with laboratory evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection with those with negative tests. KEY FINDINGS: Between March 31st and September 30th, 2020, 1211 pregnant women were screened for SARS-CoV-2 infection. The prevalence of laboratory evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infections was 5.4% (n = 65), corresponding to (i) 22 ongoing infections at admission, including two with mild clinical symptoms and 20 asymptomatic women; (ii) 43 cases of previous SARS-CoV-2 exposure; (iii) and 1146 women who were negative for both SARS-CoV-2 PCR and serological test. None of the screened mothers required hospital admission for coronavirus disease before or after delivery, nor were any of the newborns admitted to the intensive care unit. All newborns from mothers with positive PCR on admission were PCR negative. There were no significant differences in maternal or perinatal outcomes among the three studied groups. SIGNIFICANCE: Ongoing or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection with asymptomatic or mild clinical symptoms detected during screening in pregnant women at labor and delivery do not have a higher rate of adverse maternal or perinatal outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of the brain volumes acquired following an evidence-based guideline for the acquisition of brain volumes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective multicenter study. Five centers recruited five cases each, acquiring two volumes per case, at different gestational age ranges. From the collected volumes, 10 operators performed an advanced neurosonography of each case. The evaluable anatomic structures were counted in each volume and expressed as a percentage. The results were compared with those obtained in a previous study where no recommendations had been made for the acquisition of the volumes. RESULTS: Five hundred evaluations were included in the study. In the axial plane, 91.5% of the structures were satisfactorily evaluated, 81.8% in the coronal plane and 89.9% in the sagittal plane. These results were significantly better than those obtained in a previous study where the volumes had been acquired without any guidelines and the percentage of evaluable structures were 80% (P < .001), 67.1% (P < .001) and 55.1% (P < .001) in the axial, coronal and sagittal planes, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The application of an evidence-based guideline for the acquisition of brain volumes improves the quality of these by increasing the number of evaluable structures in the volume.

OBJECTIVE: To examine mortality rates related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by gender among European countries. METHODS: PubMed, preprint medRxiv and bioRxiv repositories, and Google were searched for the terms COVID-19, mortality rates, gender, and Europe. Only Google provided a website with appropriate information. COVID-19 cases and deaths from European countries were extracted by gender from the Global Health 50/50 repository up to May 23, 2020. Extracted data included country, the total number of COVID-19 cases and the number of related deaths by gender. Random effects models with the inverse variance method were used for meta-analyses. Results are reported as death risk ratios (RRs). RESULTS: We identified information from 23 European countries that reported separately by gender mortality rates related to COVID-19. The sample comprised 484,919 men and 605,229 women positive for COVID-19. The mortality rate was significantly higher in men than in women (risk ratio = 1.60, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.53, 1.68). The trend was similar when countries reporting < 5000, or < 10,000 cases were excluded from the analysis (RR = 1.60, 95 % CI 1.52, 1.69 and RR = 1.68; CI 1.62, 1.76, respectively). CONCLUSION: In Europe, the new zoonotic coronavirus causes significantly more deaths in men than in women.

Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis of Spanish studies assessed the association of maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels on perinatal outcomes. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scielo, Scopus, and Web of Science research databases were searched from inception through December 30 2017 using the terms 'vitamin D', 'pregnancy', and 'Spain'. Studies that compared first or second half of pregnancy normal 25(OH)D (≥30.0 ng/mL) versus insufficient (20.0-29.9 ng/mL) or deficient (<20.0 ng/mL) circulating levels and perinatal outcomes were systematically extracted. Data are presented as pooled odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for categorical variables or mean differences and CIs for continuous variables. Risk of bias was evaluated with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Results: Five cohort studies met inclusion criteria. The risk of gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, preterm birth, and small-for-gestational-age infants, and birthweight was not influenced by first half of pregnancy maternal 25(OH)D levels. In addition, second half of pregnancy 25(OH) levels did not affect birthweight. Conclusion: Maternal 25(OH)D levels during pregnancy did not affect studied perinatal outcomes and birthweight.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acquisition-related factors influencing the quality of the brain volumes for further study of advanced neurosonography. METHODS: This was a prospective multicentre study. Five centres were asked to include five cases each, acquiring two volumes per case, at different gestational ages. Ten operators performed an advanced neurosonography per case. The potential influence of the following factors on the number of evaluable structures was assessed: vaginal/ abdominal acquisition, position of the head, gestational age, subjective quality of the volume and the acquiring operator itself. RESULTS: Four hundred and thirty-two evaluations were included in the study. A total of 80% of the structures were evaluated satisfactorily in the axial plane, 67.1% and 55.1% in the coronal and sagittal plane, respectively. Sagittal volumes acquired transvaginally had a better quality than those acquired transabdominally. Gestational age affected the quality of axial and sagittal volumes (p < 0.001), and the best quality was obtained between 20 and 27 weeks. In axial and sagittal volumes, the head position influenced the percentage of structures visualized (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Factors affecting the quality of the volume for advanced neurosonography are gestational age, fetal head position, transvaginal acquisition in sagittal volumes, the acquiring operator and the subjective quality of the volume. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

PURPOSE: To assess sexual function, satisfaction with life (SWL), and menopause-related symptoms among mid-aged Spanish women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 260 women, aged 40-59, attending the public gynecology consultations completed the 14-item Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (CSFQ-14), the SWL Scale (SWLS), the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), and a socio-demographic questionnaire. RESULTS: Median [inter quartile range] age was 47 [8.0] years, 87.7% had a stable partner, 27.0% were postmenopausal, and 53.9% had increased body mass index (BMI). The prevalence of sexual dysfunction was 46.5% (CSFQ-14 score≤41). Postmenopausal status was associated with lower CSFQ-14 scores (worse sexual function) and severe menopausal symptoms whereas there were not significant differences in SWLS scores. CSFQ-14 scores correlated with SWLS (p<0.04), and inversely correlated with menopausal symptoms (p<0.02). Multiple linear regression analysis model predicted 26.6% of the total CSFQ-14 score variance, and higher scores (better sexual function) were correlated with better SWL, and inversely correlated to female age and worse menopausal symptoms. A second model predicted 38.4% of the SWLS score variance. The SWLS score correlated with the total CSFQ-14 score and BMI, and inversely correlated with economical problems, female tobacco use, lack of healthiness, menopausal symptoms, not having a partner, and partner's lack of healthiness. CONCLUSIONS: Lower sexual function was related to low SWL, age and menopausal symptoms while low SWLS score was related with economical problems, smoking, menopausal symptoms, and partner factors.
