The prevalence E.coli bearing Mannose-Resistant Hemagglutinating (MRHA) adhesin, Type 1 fimbriae and hemolytic activity was assessed in 103 E.coli strains isolated from 43 male and 60 female adult patients with urinary tract infection. For comparison 83 faecal E.coli strains were also examined for the same properties. MRHA adhesins were present in 58% (60/103) of the urinary strains, and 31% (26/83) of the faecal strains of E.coli. All faecal and 95% (98/103) of the urinary strains of E.coli expressed Type 1 fimbriae. Hemolytic activity was more frequent among urinary strains than among faecal strains (21%, 12%, respectively). The presence of MRHA adhesin and hemolytic activity was found correlated in 13.5% (14/103) of urinary strains whereas only one (1.2%) strain showed these properties together among the faecal isolates.

In this study, 231 Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus (MRS) and 76 Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus (MSS) strains were investigated. 23 antibiotics were tested by using Modified Kirby-Bauer Technique. The highest resistance ration in MRS strains were found for lincomycin, clindamycin and ampicillin with the ratios of 61.0%, 59.3%, and 56.2% respectively. And the lowest resistance ratios were measured for vancomycin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin 0.5%, 8.2%, 10.8% respectively. It was found that, resistance of MRS strains to 17 antibiotics were significantly higher than resistance of MSS strains, but not for sulbactam-ampicillin, cefoperazone, ceftriaxone, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and netilmicin.

231 Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus (MRS) and 76 Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus (MSS) strains were investigated for Staphylococcal Protein A, bacteriocin, DNase and beta lactamase production properties. It was found that 73.6% of the strains of MRS were positive for protein A, 3.8% for bacteriocin, 76.2% for DNase and 84.4% for beta lactamase production. And it was found that 61.8% of MSS strains were positive for protein A, 11.8% for bacteriocin, 55.2% for DNase and 57.9% for beta lactamase production. Staphylococcal protein A, DNase and lactamase production. Staphylococcal protein A, DNase and lactamase production were found to be significantly higher in MRS strains than MSS strains and bacteriocin production was found to be higher in MSS strains than MRS strains according to Chi Square Test.

For the chemical control of bacterial plaque, various oral rinses have been suggested. Oral rinses which have been used widely in dentistry for the treatment of periodontal disease were tested in this study. We investigated the effects of 4 national and 1 foreign commercially available oral rinses. Our study was headed to compare these oral rinses with CHx solution which has been accepted as a "+" control material. At the end of this study CHx was found to be the only effective solution. From those of tested, only Heksoral, a national brand, oral rinse and a foreign originated Veadent had very limited anti plaque effects.

Sequential height determinations were made in patients with isolated cleft palate (ICP) and in patients with cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) during an 11-year period. In 31 patients with ICP height percentiles tended to decrease with age. Beyond 8 years of age, none exceeded the 50th percentile, and measurements in eight (26%) of the patients with ICP were consistently below the fifth percentile. In 34 patients with CLP, after 4 years of age height percentiles were bimodular and clearly separable into a short group (65% below the 50th percentile) and a tall group (35% at or above the 70th percentile). The average height of the parents was normal and suggests alteration of the polygenic inheritance of stature in patients with ICP. While the heights of short and tall patients with CLP reflect the mean height of their parents, the distinct bimodular distribution of the heights of patients with CLP was not anticipated.
