RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although numerous studies have documented malocclusion in various age groups in India, the literature on the prevalence of malocclusion in mixed dentition is scanty. Dental caries is another most common condition affecting the general health. However, its association with malocclusion in mixed dentition is not well known. AIM: The purpose of this study was to establish the prevalence of malocclusion and its association with caries experience in 8-9-year-old children of Davangere city, South Indian region. SETTING AND DESIGN: The study design was a cross-sectional survey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 800 children from 350 schools (both males and females) were randomly selected for the study. t-test and Chi-square test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of malocclusion among 8-9-year-old children was 40.9%. The most prevalent malocclusion was crowding (11.5%), followed by excessive overjet (9.4%), deep bite (6.8%), spacing (6.5%), crossbite (4.5%), and open bite (3.2%). Class I molar relationship prevailed in 95.5% of children. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of malocclusion in our study was in accordance with the other studies reported in India, which ranged from 19.6% to 90%. Furthermore, correlation of malocclusion and dental caries in the primary dentition, although nonsignificant, presented children with malocclusion to have a higher caries experience than children without malocclusion.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In March 2012, World Health Organization recommended that HIV testing should be offered to all patients with presumptive TB (previously called TB suspects). How this is best implemented and monitored in routine health care settings in India was not known. An operational research was conducted in Karnataka State (South India, population 64 million, accounts for 10% of India's HIV burden), to test processes and learn results and challenges of screening presumptive TB patients for HIV within routine health care settings. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study conducted between January-March 2012, all presumptive TB patients attending public sector sputum microscopy centres state-wide were offered HIV testing by the laboratory technician, and referred to the nearest public sector HIV counselling and testing services, usually within the same facility. The HIV status of the patients was recorded in the routine TB laboratory form and TB laboratory register. The laboratory register was compiled to obtain the number of presumptive TB patients whose HIV status was ascertained, and the number found HIV positive. Aggregate data on reasons for non-testing were compiled at district level. RESULTS: Overall, 115,308 patients with presumptive TB were examined for sputum smear microscopy at 645 microscopy centres state-wide. Of these, HIV status was ascertained for 62,847(55%) among whom 7,559(12%) were HIV-positive, and of these, 3,034(40%) were newly diagnosed. Reasons for non-testing were reported for 37,700(72%) of the 52,461 patients without HIV testing; non-availability of testing services at site of sputum collection was cited by health staff in 54% of respondents. Only 4% of patients opted out of HIV testing. CONCLUSION: Offering HIV testing routinely to presumptive TB patients detected large numbers of previously-undetected instances of HIV infection. Several operational challenges were noted which provide useful lessons for improving uptake of HIV testing in this important group.

RESUMEN

Management of traumatic injuries to teeth is a challenge to dental practice, as it occurs when dentists are least prepared for it. The direction and the force of the object or the fall significantly affects the diagnosis, treatment plan and therefore the outcome of the treatment. These traumatic injuries may present with different clinical situations which demand immediate attention and assessment by the clinician. The maxillary central incisor crown fractures are the most common variant of trauma, because of the anterior and protrusive positioning. This case report describes the novel method to produce expansion of the dental arches to correct the post-traumatic displacement of the central incisor along with aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of Ellis Class IV fracture of permanent maxillary central incisor.

RESUMEN

Background. This paper reports a case with end-on-molar relation with maxillary anterior teeth proclination, lower anterior teeth crowding, and deep bite. The case was successfully treated in a short span. Clinically significant improvement in the dimensions of the maxillary and mandibular dental arch forms and sufficient space for the eruption of permanent teeth was observed. Conclusion. Therefore, it can be concluded that preorthodontic trainer is a valid treatment of choice in mixed dentition where transverse expansion is a part of the treatment plan, as the results obtained are within short period of time and have less chances of relapse, because the correction of a malocclusion is by elimination of soft tissue dysfunction.

RESUMEN

Tooth transplantation has attracted great interests since ancient times. A successful case of tooth allotransplantation is presented. A mandibular first premolar from the donor was implanted into the socket of maxillary central incisor Follow up after 12 months indicated good periapical healing with no resorption. Clinically, the transplantation site was free of symptoms and there was no evidence of periodontal disease or tooth mobility. This article suggests tooth transplantation as an alternative to other restorative options.

RESUMEN

The anticariogenic effect of alum was evaluated in the study by measuring the salivary S. mutans levels of children at baseline, after 3-weeks, and 6-weeks of using alum-containing mouthrinses. Sixty subjects with a mean age of eleven years were selected and randomly divided into four groups. Two experimental mouthrinses (alum in physiological saline and alum in distilled water) and two control mouthrinses (physiological saline and distilled water) were given for a period of 6 weeks on a daily basis. Salivary samples were collected at the end of 3 weeks and 6 weeks and S. mutans levels were assessed and compared with baseline values and among each other. Both the alum-containing mouthrinses produced statistically significant reductions in S. mutans levels in children, thus tempting us to announce alum as a routine oral hygiene measure, though its safety for prolonged usage needs to be established by long-term studies.
