RESUMEN

We aimed to understand the changes in nutritional parameters and performance of beef cows during the peripartum, whether receiving or not receiving protein supplements. Forty cows were used, divided into two treatments: CON-mineral mix and SUP-protein supplementation. Digestibility trial was performed at 45, 30, and 15 days (d) before the parturition and at 20 and 40 d of lactation. The ADG of cows pre- and postpartum was recorded along with the BCS in gestational (GT) and maternal (MT) tissues in the prepartum. There was an effect of treatment and period (p ≤ 0.044) for intakes of DM and CP. The forage intake was similar (p > 0.90) but varied with the effect of days related to parturition (p < 0.001). There was a 14.37% decrease in DM intake from d -30 to d -15 of prepartum. In the postpartum, at 20 d of lactation, there was an increase of 72.7% in relation to d -15 of prepartum. No differences were observed in postpartum ADG or BCS at parturition and postpartum (p ≥ 0.12). However, higher total and MT ADG (p ≤ 0.02) were observed in animals receiving supplementation, while ADG in GT remained similar (p > 0.14). In conclusion, there is a decrease in intake for pregnant cows close to parturition and greater performance of animals supplemented in prepartum.

RESUMEN

Biscuit bran (BB) is a co-product with worldwide distribution, with Brazil as the second largest cookie producer in the world with 1,157,051 tons. We evaluate the impact of completely replacing corn with BB on the characteristics and morphometry of carcass of purebred and crossbred Morada Nova lambs using machine learning techniques as an auxiliary method. Twenty male lambs from two genetic groups (GG) were used: purebred red-coated Morada Nova (MNR) and crossbred MNR × white-coated Morada Nova (MNF1). Supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques were used. No interaction (P > 0.05) was observed between diets (D) and genetic groups (GG) and no simple isolated effect was observed for carcass characteristics, qualitative-quantitative typification of the Longissimus dorsi muscle, weight of non-carcass components, weight and yield of commercial cuts and carcass morphometric measurements. The formation of two horizontal clusters was verified: (i) crossed lambs with corn and BB and (ii) purebred lambs fed corn and BB. Vertically, three clusters were formed based on carcass and meat characteristics of native lambs: (i) thermal insulation, body capacity, true yield, and commercial cuts; (ii) choice, performance, physical carcass traits, and palatability; and (iii) yield cuts and non-carcass components. The heatmap also allowed us to observe that pure MN lambs had a greater body capacity when fed BB, while those fed corn showed superiority in commercial cuts, true yields, and non-carcass components. Crossbred lambs, regardless of diet, showed a greater association of physical characteristics of the carcass, performance, palatability, and less noble cuts. Crossbred lambs, regardless of diet, showed a greater association of physical characteristics of the carcass, performance, palatability, and less noble cuts. BB can be considered an alternative energy source in total replacement of corn. Integrating of machine learning techniques is a useful statistical tool for studies with large numbers of variables, especially when it comes to analyzing complex data with multiple effects in the search for data patterns and insights in decision-making on the farm.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different types of porosity of titanium meshes on the bone neoformation process in critical defects surgically created in rat calvaria, by means of microtomographic and histomorphometric analyses. Defects of 5 mm in diameter were created in the calvaria of 36 rats, and the animals were randomly treated and divided into the following groups (6 animals per group): NCOG (negative control, only blood clot), TEMG (Polytetrafluoroethylene-PTFE-membrane), SPTMG (small pore titanium mesh), SPMMG (small pore mesh + PTFE), LPTMG (large pore titanium mesh), and LPMMG (large pore mesh + PTFE). After 60 days, the animals were sacrificed, and the bone tissue formed was evaluated with micro-CT and histomorphometry. The data were compared using an ANOVA followed by the Tukey post-test (p ≤ 0.05). The microtomographic results showed that the SPTMG group presented the highest numerical value for bone volume/total volume (22.24 ± 8.97), with statistically significant differences for all the other groups except LPTMG. Considering the histomorphometric evaluation, groups with only porous titanium meshes showed higher values compared to the groups that used the PTFE membrane and the negative control. The SPTMG group presented higher values in the parameters of area (0.44 mm2 ± 0.06), extension (1.19 mm2 ± 0.12), and percentage (7.56 ± 1.45%) of neoformed bone. It was concluded that titanium mesh with smaller pores showed better results and that the association of PTFE membranes with titanium meshes did not improve the outcomes, suggesting a correlation between mesh porosity and underlying bone repair.

RESUMEN

Introduction: perinatal mortality is characterized by fetal deaths that occur after the 22nd week of management and neonatal deaths that precede six full days of life. This indicator has been a matter of concern and discussion on the part of entities and organizations involved in comprehensive health care for women and children. Objective: to characterize perinatal deaths in the Metropolitan Region of Greater Vitória (RMGV) in Espírito Santo and identify associated maternal factors in the period between 2008 and 2017.Methods: ecological and descriptive study with a quantitative approach, carried out in 2019 on perinatal mortality from 2008 to 2017 at RMGV. Data collection was performed by extracting data from the SIM, SINASC, IBGE databases of the Espírito Santo State Health Department, about perinatal deaths and associated maternal factors. The research respects the ethical precepts of resolution 466/12 of the National Health Council. Results: the distribution of deaths did not occur homogeneously in the municipalities in the RMGV. The municipality of Vitória had the lowest perinatal mortality rates during the study period, on the other hand, in the comparative analysis between the different municipalities that make up the RMGV, the municipality of Fundão presents the worst scenario regarding perinatal mortality over the years. Regarding the underlying causes of death, it is noted that in this study, the three causes with the highest number of occurrences are complications of the placenta, umbilical cord and maternal affections, not necessarily related to the current pregnancy and intrauterine hypoxia. Conclusion: there were no significant changes in mortality rates in the Metropolitan Region of Greater Vitória. However, the main deaths occurred in neighborhoods with greater socioeconomic inequalities. Maternal causes were highly representative of deaths, raising issues associated with the improvement of public health policies.

Osteoporosis can affect a significant part of the population and fractures are the most common complications associated with this disease, leading to high public health costs. Thus, the prevention of fractures is relevant to individuals with signs and symptoms as well as to the health system. Postmenopausal osteoporosis has been associated with oxidative stress, emphasizing the importance of an efficient defense system to maintain bone health. Lycopene is a carotenoid with antioxidant properties that may stimulate osteoblastogenesis and inhibit osteoclastogenesis. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the influence of lycopene in the bone neoformation of calvaria defects in ovariectomized rats utilizing the concentration of 45 mg/kg. Wistar Hannover female rats were divided into ovariectomized and sham groups. The ovariectomized animals received 45 mg/kg lycopene (OvxL) or water (Ovx) by daily gavage the day after ovariectomy/sham surgery for 16 weeks. Twelve weeks after ovariectomy, there were performed 5-mm calvaria defects followed by euthanasia after 4 weeks. Samples of bone tissue were collected to perform morphological and morphometrical analysis of the neoformed bone area, and percentage with Software Image J. Morphological evaluation showed mature bone with more osteocytes in the group OVxL when compared to the other groups. The morphometrical analysis demonstrated a significant increase of bone neoformation in the group OvxL (p<0.05). The data obtained suggest that lycopene benefits bone repair in the absence of estrogenic hormones.

Our objective was to evaluate voluntary intake, apparent digestibility, performance, and nitrogen balance of dairy cows fed sugarcane silage under different particle sizes treated or not with calcium oxide (CaO). Eight F1 Holstein/Zebu cows, with body weight of 521.5 ± 55.17 kg, and 60 ± 10 days in milk were used, distributed into two simultaneous 4 × 4 Latin squares. The treatments were composed of sugarcane into two particle sizes (15 and 30 mm) with and without the addition of CaO (10 g/kg of natural matter), being the treatments compared according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Data were analyzed by the MIXED procedure of SAS. The intake of dry matter (13.05 kg/day), crude protein, non-fibrous carbohydrates, and neutral detergent fiber was not modified (P > 0.05) by the inclusion of the calcium oxide, nor by particles size and interaction among both. However, there was interaction between CaO and particle size on dry matter digestibility (P = 0.002), being that the CaO was effective in promoting greater DM digestibility in silages with larger particle size. The milk yield and composition were also not affected by the diets (P > 0.05), similarly for nitrogen balance (P > 0.05). The addition of CaO to sugarcane silage with different particle sizes (15 and 30 mm) does not affect the milk yield and composition of dairy cows, nor the nitrogen balance. However, when CaO is added to the sugarcane silage under larger particle sizes, there are benefits in DM digestibility.

Backgroung: the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity (FI) in the world will reach 2.4 billion people in 2020. Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) affect one in five people, reaching all social classes. Objective: to examine the associations between CMDs and FI in the most vulnerable population, mothers of young children. Methods: population-based cross-sectional observational study, interviewing 484 families with children under six years of age, beneficiaries of the cash transfer program Cartão Mais Infância Ceará (CMIC), in 24 municipalities of Ceara. Poisson regression models were used, adjusted for the sampling effect. Results: 86% of the families were in a situation of FI, with 36% expressing a severe FI, a condition compatible with hunger. In relation to CMDs, it was observed that the prevalence of severe FI increased significantly, affecting 53% of mothers with CMDs against 31% of those without the disorder (p<0.001). Regression analysis showed that CMDs remained the risk factor most associated with severe FI, with mothers with CMDs having a 64% higher adjusted risk compared to other mothers (p=0.002). In the final model, the condition of not having treated water at home was associated with a 55% higher adjusted risk of severe FI (p=0.011), and two factors were close to statistical significance, namely: not feeling safe at home (possibility of domestic violence) and growing edible plants at home, with adjusted measures of 48% risk and 13% protection, respectively. Conclusion: 13% of this population live with very high rates of severe FI, compatible with hunger, concomitant with CMDs. As aggravating factors of severe FI and CMDs, public social support programs are necessary to have a real positive impact on the quality of life of this population.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in patients with systemic autoimmune myopathies (SAMs). METHODS: This prospective, randomised, sham-controlled, double-blind, study included 20 patients with SAMs allocated to receive sham or active tDCS (2mA, 20 minutes, 3 days). Electrodes were positioned with the anode over the C1 or C2, whereas the cathode was placed over the Fp2 or Fp1, respectively. The groups were evaluated in four periods with specific questionnaires and functional tests: pre-stimulation and after 30 minutes, three weeks, and eight weeks post-tDCS. RESULTS: Two patients from the sham group withdrew after the three sessions. The demographic data, type of myositis, disease duration, and disease status were comparable between the active and sham tDCS groups. After interventions, in the active tDCS group, the physical aspects of SF-36 in week eight, mean and better timed up-and-go test at each evaluation, peak torque of stimulated inferior limb extension improved significantly (p<0.05). The emotional aspect of SF-36 decreased only in the active tDCS group (p<0.001). The patients' adherence to the protocol was 100% and no serious adverse event was reported, including disease relapses. CONCLUSIONS: This study evidences the safety of tDCS, as well as its potential efficacy in improving muscle strength and function in SAMs patients. More studies with a larger sample and longer tDCS sessions are necessary to corroborate the results of the present study.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of conditional cash transfer policies to mitigate the food insecurity (FI) among families living in poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ceará, Brazil. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out through telephone contact during the period of May-July 2021, during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ceará. Families in a situation of high social and economic vulnerability participated in this study (monthly per capita income of less than US$16.50). FI was assessed using the EBIA, a Brazilian validated questionnaire. The participation of families in government programs and public policies was also investigated. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association of the several factors assessed with food insecurity. RESULTS: The prevalence of any food insecurity in this sample was 89.1% (95% Confidence interval (95% CI: 86.2 - 92.1) and of severe food insecurity, 30.3% (95% CI: 26.0 - 34.6). The Mais Infância card program, adopted as a cash transfer supplement in the state of Ceará, was significantly associated with food insecurity (OR 4.2 (95% CI: 1.7 - 10.2), with a p-value of 0.002. In addition, families affected by job losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic presented higher odds of FI. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, 89% of evaluated families presented food insecurity. Conditional cash transfer programs were associated with FI. We highlight the need for policies and interventions to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food insecurity. Such policies can adopt appropriate criteria for defining the participants, as well as connect the participants to an appropriate set of broader social protection measures.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In 1839, the Escola de Farmácia de Ouro Preto pioneered the teaching of pharmaceutical sciences in Brazil. At the end of the 19th century, the Escola de Farmácia possessed a French collection of anatomical models, some made of wax and paper-mâché. The models were a critical part of teaching anatomy, particularly in an era of paradigm changes about how the human brain works. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to anatomically describe the brain models through a comparative analysis with the current anatomical description. METHODS: Comparative analysis of the brain models with modern anatomical descriptions. RESULTS: In the individual analysis of the wax models, we verified excellent anatomical accuracy of the cortical and subcortical regions. Our results identified internal structures, like the basal ganglia and white matter. Compared with modern anatomical books and websites, the wax brain models have high scientific quality. CONCLUSION: The models of the present study gave students hands-on experience of human anatomy in the 19th century. Nowadays, the models are part of the memory of Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto and Museu da Pharmacia de Ouro Preto . The collection of wax models shows the appreciation of neuroanatomy teaching at the turn of the century concomitant with advances in neurology and anatomy around the world.

This research evaluated the effects of using by-product from biscuit industry (BBI) in the diet of fattening lambs of Morada Nova breed. Lamb growth performances and carcass traits were investigated. Twenty Morada Nova breed male lambs body weight (BW) 17.1 ± 3.74 kg, single born, and age 141 ± 7 days were divided into four homogeneous groups (n = 5) fed for 8.5 weeks with four experimental diets replacing corn with BBI at 0, 150, 300, and 450 g/kg. Experimental diets were consisted of 30% Tifton-85 hay and 70% concentrate on dry matter (DM) basis. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isoenergetic in order to supply nutrient requirements of growing lambs with an average daily gain of 200 g/day. Increased feeding levels of BBI partially replacing corn did not affect dry matter intake, organic matter, and crude protein intake (P > 0.05). Animal performance was not affected by the dietary treatments (P > 0.05). BBI addition to the concentrate did not influence carcass traits, carcass measurements, quali-quantitative of Longissimus lumborum muscle, and meat cuts (P > 0.05). Partially replacing corn with a by-product from biscuit industry does not affect performance and carcass traits of fattening lambs. The BBI can partially replace up to 450 g/kg DM of corn on lambs' diets as a suitable agro-industrial by-product.

RESUMEN

This research analyzed the temporal trend of stroke mortality in children aged 0-14 years, from 1990 to 2019, in Brazil and its federative units. This ecological study used data from the Global Burden of Disease, a study led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Stroke definition considered the International Classification of Diseases according to codes G45, G46, and I60-I69. Age-standardized mortality rates and the mean annual percentage change (APC) in mortality rates were estimated. Stroke mortality trends decreased, with an APC of - 3.9% (95% CI - 4.5; - 3.3; p < 0.001). Reducing trends were found in all but two states, where they were stationary. Maranhão (- 6.5%; 95% CI - 7.6; - 5.4; p < 0.001) had the greatest reduction and Rondônia, the smallest (- 1.2%; 95% CI - 2.3; - 0.1, p = 0.027). Decrease was more important in children < 5 (- 5.8%; 95% CI - 6.3; - 5.2; p < 0.001) compared to 5-14 years old (- 2.1%; 95% CI - 2.9; - 1.3; p < 0.001); additionally, it was greater in girls (- 4.1%; 95% CI - 4.6; - 3.5; p < 0.001) than in boys (- 3.8%; 95% IC - 4.5; - 3.1; p < 0.001). Ischemic stroke had the highest APC (- 6.1%; 95% CI - 6.8; - 5.3; p < 0.001), followed by intracranial hemorrhage (- 5.3%; 95% CI - 6.1; - 4.5; p < 0.001) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (- 2.7%; 95% CI - 3.3; - 2.1; p < 0.001). Largest reductions were seen in states with more vulnerable socioeconomic contexts. The stationary trends and lowest APCs were concentrated in the northern region, which had greater impact of diseases and less favorable outcomes.

Abstract The Ouro Preto School of Pharmacy was founded in 1839 and was the first pharmacy school in Latin America independent from a medical school. At the end of the nineteenth century, it had a collection of French anatomical models made by Deyrolle, Dr. Auzoux, and Vasseur-Tramod, many produced from wax or papier-mâché. This project involved recovering, identifying, cleaning, restoring, and exhibiting seventeen models found in various facilities from Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto. The models in good condition were exhibited in the Museum of Pharmacy (where this work was carried out) as part of the teaching collection for the Ouro Preto pharmacy course.

RESUMEN

Abstract Background In 1839, the Escola de Farmácia de Ouro Preto pioneered the teaching of pharmaceutical sciences in Brazil. At the end of the 19th century, the Escola de Farmácia possessed a French collection of anatomical models, some made of wax and paper-mâché. The models were a critical part of teaching anatomy, particularly in an era of paradigm changes about how the human brain works. Objective The present study aimed to anatomically describe the brain models through a comparative analysis with the current anatomical description. Methods Comparative analysis of the brain models with modern anatomical descriptions. Results In the individual analysis of the wax models, we verified excellent anatomical accuracy of the cortical and subcortical regions. Our results identified internal structures, like the basal ganglia and white matter. Compared with modern anatomical books and websites, the wax brain models have high scientific quality. Conclusion The models of the present study gave students hands-on experience of human anatomy in the 19th century. Nowadays, the models are part of the memory of Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto and Museu da Pharmacia de Ouro Preto. The collection of wax models shows the appreciation of neuroanatomy teaching at the turn of the century concomitant with advances in neurology and anatomy around the world.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a new porcine bone graft in rat calvaria bone defects. Critical defects were surgically created in 24 rats that were divided into four experimental groups according to defect filling (n = 6): Control Group (CG)blood clot; Porcine Bone Group (PG)porcine-derived bone substitute; (BG): Bio-Oss Group (BG)−chemically and heat-treated bovine graft; Bonefill Group (BFG)chemically treated bovine bone substitute. Euthanasia of the animals occurred 30 days after the surgery, and the area of the original surgical defect and the surrounding tissues were removed for micro-CT and histomorphometric analysis. In the micro-CT evaluation, the PG presented statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in comparison to the CG, BG and BFG, for the parameters percentage of Bone Volume (BV/TV), Surface Bone Density (BS/TV), Number of Trabeculae (Tb.N) and Bone Connectivity (Conn), but not for Total Porosity (Po.tot) and Trabecular Thickness (Tb.Th). The histomorphometric analysis showed that the PG presented similar results to the BG regarding newly formed bone extension and to the BG and BFG regarding newly formed bone area. The porcine-derived graft presented superior microtomographic and histomorphometric results when compared to the two bovine bone substitutes.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether there is an association between the level of progesterone on the day of administration of human chorionic gonadotropin and clinical and laboratory characteristics, in addition to the results of in vitro fertilization of patients with a good prognosis. METHODS: A cross-sectional study comprising 103 women who underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatment, between November 2009 and May 2015, aged ≤35 years, with no comorbidities, with fresh embryo transfer. Data were collected from patient medical records. RESULTS: There was a weak positive correlation between the level of progesterone on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin and the number of follicles larger than 14mm (ß=0.02, p=0.001), retrieved oocytes (ß=0.01, p=0.01) and oocytes in metaphase II (MII) (ß=0.02, p=0.02); that is, the increase in progesterone level has a slight association with increased values of these variables. Body mass index was inversely correlated with progesterone level on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (ß=-0.01, p=0.02). No association was found between the level of progesterone on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin and the protocols used for controlled ovarian stimulation, quality of transferred embryos and the pregnancy rate. CONCLUSION: There is an association between the value of progesterone on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin administration with body mass index, number of follicles larger than 14mm, number of retrieved oocytes and oocytes in metaphase II. Unlike embryo quality and pregnancy rate, which do not have a statistically significant relation with this value in the population studied.

RESUMEN

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, including in Brazil. This study aimed to analyze the temporal trend of the prevalence of modifiable risk factors of stroke from 2006 to 2012. This ecological study was conducted by secondary analysis in May 2018, using data from the surveillance of risk factors and protection for chronic diseases by telephone inquiry (VIGITEL) available in the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The modifiable risk factors of stroke in Brazilians were systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, abusive alcohol consumption, overweight, and obesity. Overall, there was a significant increase in the risk factors of diabetes (ß = 0.30, P = 0.001, r2 = 0.99), overweight (ß = 0.50, P = 0.002, r2 = 0.98), and obesity (ß = 0.88, P < 0.001, r2 = 0.96). However, there was a stability in the prevalence of hypertension (ß = 0.25, P = 0.320, r2 = 0.88) and alcohol abuse (ß = 0.32, P = 0.116, r2 = 0.49). There was an increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, overweight, and obesity, but stability in systemic arterial hypertension and abusive alcohol consumption in the Brazilian population.

RESUMEN

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of replacing corn with by-product from biscuit manufacture (BBM) on feed intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance, ingestive behavior, and growth performance of pure or crossbred Morada Nova sheep. Twenty-four non-castrated male lambs from two genetic groups (GG) were used: purebred red-coated Morada Nova (RMN) and red-coated Morada Nova x white-coated Morada Nova. Each GG had 12 lambs with an initial body weight (BW) of 15.0±0.84 and 18.8±0.88 kg for RMN and crossbred lambs, respectively. Treatments were distributed in a completely randomized design, according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, as follows: two genetic groups (RMN and crossbred) and two diets (ground corn and by-product from biscuit manufacture-BBM) with six replicates. There was no effect (p > 0.05) of GG on feed intake (g/day and as a fraction of BW). Lambs fed BBM had a lower feed intake (p < 0.05) than corn-fed lambs, except for the non-fibrous carbohydrate intake, which did not differ among diets (p > 0.05). No effects (p > 0.05) of GG or diets were observed on apparent digestibility, except for organic matter, which was higher for BBM-fed lambs (p < 0.05). Intake and N urinary excretion were lower (p < 0.05) for BBM-fed lambs when compared to corn-fed lambs. There was no effect (p > 0.05) of GG on growth performance. On the other hand, lambs fed BBM diet had a higher (p < 0.05) feed efficiency than corn-fed lambs. Total replacing corn with BBM in finishing lamb diets increases the efficiency of nutrient utilization, which results in higher feed efficiency. The crossbreeding between the red- and white-coated strains of Morada Nova sheep does not affect nutritional and growth performance.
