RESUMEN

With recently increasing the environmental problems and expected energy crisis, it is necessary to synthesis a low-cost, efficient, and UV-light responsive photocatalyst for contaminants' degradation. The nanostructured spinel ferrite Mn0.5Zn0.5-xMgxFe2O4 NPs (x = 0.0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375 and 0.50) were synthesized via the sol-gel method. The crystallite size was lied in nano regime ranging from 21.8 to 36.5 nm. The surface chemical composition of the Mn0.5Zn0.5-xMgxFe2O4 NPs was investigated via XPS analysis. Mossbauer spectra showed that the peaks were shifted to higher values of the maximum magnetic field as the Mg content increased, indicating that the crystallinity is enhanced while the crystal size is decreased. Also, various parameters such as the photocatalyst dose, dyes concentration, pH, point of zero charge, and the metals leaching were studied. The point of zero charge (PZC) has found at pH = 2.38. The Mn0.5Zn0.125Mg0.375Fe2O4 NPs showed an excellent UV-assisted photocatalytic activity against Chloramine T (90 % removal efficiency) and Rhodamine B (95 % removal efficiency) after 80 min as compared to pure Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 ferrite NPs. Besides, it a recyclable catalyst at least four times with a negligible reduction of photocatalytic activity with slight elements leaching. Furthermore, the Mn0.5Zn0.25Mg0.25Fe2O4 NPs showed a high antimicrobial activity towards pathogenic bacteria and yeats.

RESUMEN

Epilepsy may restrict the patient's daily life. It causes lower quality of life and increased risk for work-related accidents (WRA). The aim of this study is to analyze the implantation of the Epidemiologic and Technical Security System Nexus (ETSSN) and WRA patterns among patients with epilepsy. Data regarding WRA, between 1999 and 2008, on the historical database of WRA Infolog Statistical Yearbook from Brazilian Ministry of Social Security were reviewed. There was a significant increase of reported cases during the ten year period, mainly after the establishment of the ETSSN. The increased granted benefits evidenced the epidemiologic association between epilepsy and WRA. ETSSN possibly raised the registration of occupational accidents and granted benefits. However, the real number of WRA may remain underestimated due to informal economy and house workers' accidents which are usually not included in the official statistics in Brazil.

Through a home-based survey, all people aged 18 years and over (n = 1800) in the catchment areas of 12 primary health care centres in 4 Egyptian governorates were subjected to standardized waist and hip measurements. Central obesity was determined based on the waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) indicators. The age-adjusted prevalence of central obesity among adults was 24.1% and 28.7% based on the WC and WHR indicators respectively. After adjustment for sex and other confounding factors, WC was significantly associated with the risk of diabetes and hypertension, while WHR was not significantly associated with either diabetes or hypertension. No significant association was seen between body mass index and diabetes or hypertension.

RESUMEN

The ortho hydroxy/methyl, hydroxy/hydroxymethyl, hydroxy/formyl, and hydroxy/carboxy substitution patterns, some of which confer dopaminergic agonist effects upon 2-aminotetralin ring systems, have been incorporated into beta-phenethylamine, 2-aminoindan, and trans-octahydrobenzo[f]quinoline rings. Certain of the 2-aminoindan derivatives displayed pharmacologic properties consistent with their being dopaminergic agonists. The beta-phenethylamine derivative did not show any significant dopamine-like activity. The 7-hydroxy-8-methyloctahydrobenzo[f]quinoline derivative 4a was a moderately potent, short-acting DA2 receptor antagonist. All of the carboxylic acid derivatives were inert. Of the ortho hydroxy/methyl derivatives, only the 5-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-aminotetralin derivative displayed pharmacological properties consistent with its being a dopaminergic prodrug. It is concluded that 5-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin (1a) is structurally unique for a dopaminergic drug.

RESUMEN

The effect of some heterocyclic compounds on some aspects of human semen metabolism was studied. Caffeine produced stimulation of motility and lactic acid production and an inhibition of fructose utilization and oxygen uptake. Nicotinamide and riboflavin produced stimulation of motility, fructose utilization and oxygen uptake and an inhibition of lactic acid production.

RESUMEN

The condensation of 5-nitrosalicoylchloride and 5-sulphamoylsalicylic acid with certain amines is described. Reacting the acid chloride with 3-amino-2-oxazolidone, 4-aminophenazone, thiosemicarbazide, 1-aminohydantoin and 2-aminopyridine yielded the correspondong N-substituted 5-nitrosalicylamides (1a-c), while with semicarbazide a disubstituted product type 2 was obtained. On the other hand, when 5-sulphamoylsalicylic acid was condensed with o-chloroaniline, m-chloroaniline and 4-aminophenazone in the presence of phosphorus trichloride, instead of affording the expected condensation products type 3, it yielded N1N5-disubstituted 5-sulphamoylsalicylamides (4a-c). The synthesized compounds were screened for antimicrobial activity.

RESUMEN

Percutaneous needle biopsy of the kidney on eight nephrotic patients with Schistosoma mansoni and chronic Salmonella paratyphi A infection showed diffuse proliferative glomerular change in all biopsies. Capillary basement membrane was normal. Diffuse granular deposits were detected in the glomerular mesangial cells by direct staining with fluorescein labelled anti-IgG anti-IgM. No fluorescence was obtained with rabbit anti-Salmonella paratyphi A. After treatment with ampicillin and niridazole, a reduction of cellular proliferation and mesangial matrix expansion was observed. Simultaneously following treatment there occurred a dramatic clinical improvement with cessation of proteinuria and a return of plasma protein levels and serum complement (C3) to normal values.
