RESUMEN

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP) protein in diets for early weaned pigs. In Exp. 1, 144 weanling pigs (24 +/- 4 d of age) were used to determine the effects of replacing dried skim milk (DSM) with either 4% SDPP or 2.75% spray-dried blood meal (SDBM) in Phase 1 diets (d 0 to 14 postweaning). During 0 to 14, pigs fed SDPP or SDBM had higher ADG (P < .05) and ADFI (P < .1) than those fed DSM. Pigs fed SDPP had greater (P < .05) ADG and ADFI (P < .1) than those fed SDBM. In Exp. 2, performance was similar in pigs fed two plasma protein sources (AP-820 and MP-722). In Exp.3, 18 weanling pigs (19 to 20 d of age) were used to determine the effects of feeding high levels of SDPP on performance and on plasma IGF-I, growth hormone, insulin, and glucose concentrations. Pigs were fed either a control diet containing 21.5% soybean meal (SBM) or a diet containing 14% SDPP. Treatments were applied for 14 d (Phase 1). During d 0 to 14, pigs fed a SDPP had a greater ADG and ADFI (P < .05) than pigs fed SBM. Replacing SBM with SDPP did not affect plasma IGF-I and glucose concentrations. However, SDPP replacement increased (P < .06) plasma growth hormone concentrations. Insulin levels were greater (P < .06) in pigs fed SBM than in those fed SDPP. These results indicate that SDPP and SDBM are effective alternatives to DSM or SBM in Phase 1 diets and the two plasma protein sources will produce similar performance. The factor(s) responsible for this improved performance does not seem to involve a change in plasma IGF-I.

RESUMEN

Seventy-two Yorkshire pigs weaned at 21 d of age were allotted to one of seven treatments with different protein sources serving as the primary lysine source at the expense of dried skim milk. Protein sources were dried skim milk (DSM), two isolated soybean proteins (ISP), three soybean protein concentrates (SPC), and 48.5% soybean meal (SBM). Average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (G:F) were greater (P < .05) for pigs fed the DSM diet, the two ISP diets, or the three SPC diets during the first 2-wk period than for pigs fed the SBM diet. Average daily feed intake (ADFI) during the 1st wk was lowest in pigs fed the SBM diet. During the 2nd wk on trial and for the first 2-wk period, ADFI among the dietary treatments was similar. Performance of pigs fed either the ISP diets or the SPC diets as the supplemental protein source was equal to the performance of those fed the DSM diet. Average daily gain, G:F, and ADFI during a subsequent 3-wk period were not affected by treatment. Dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) digestibilities were greater (P < .01) in pigs fed DSM, ISP, and SPC diets than in those fed the SBM diet. Apparent digestibility of DM, N, and amino acids (AA) improved from wk 1 to wk 2 postweaning in pigs fed SBM but not in those fed DSM. However, digestibilities of these nutrients were similar among pigs fed the DSM, ISP, and SPC diets.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMEN

Early-weaned gilts fitted with simple ileal T-cannulas were used to determine the effect of protein source on N and amino acid (AA) digestibility. The digestibilities of N and AA in 25- to 53-d-old pigs fed either dried skim milk (DSM), isolated soybean protein (ISP), soybean protein concentrate (SPC), or soybean meal (SBM) as the only protein source were determined. The pigs were fed semipurified diets formulated to contain 22% CP. Digestibility of N and overall essential amino acids (EAA) and nonessential amino acids (NEAA) both at the terminal ileum and over the total digestive tract of early-weaned pigs was greater (P < .01) by pigs fed the DSM, ISP, and SPC diets than by those fed the SBM diet. The ileal and total tract digestibilities for N and all AA except glutamic acid (P < .05) increased with increasing age of pigs. Digestibility both at the ileum and total digestive tract for lysine was greater (P < .01) in pigs fed the DSM diet than in those fed any of the soybean protein diets. Digestibility values over the total tract were greater than values estimated at the ileum, indicating a net disappearance of both N and AA in the hindgut. This study suggests that low digestibility of the first-limiting AA, lysine, may limit performance of pigs fed a SBM diet.

RESUMEN

To have diverse nursing models is well and good, but how does one select among them or even understand their differences? Sohn devises a simple method for comparing nursing models that will be of use to teachers, students, and practitioners alike.

RESUMEN

Common concepts of conceptual frameworks and curriculum patterns are identified by studying all 18 English-speaking, generic baccalaureate nursing programmes in Canada. Four identified curriculum patterns use client systems, health-illness, growth and development, and nursing roles as the primary curriculum organizer to sequence programme courses. The nursing programmes commonly use nursing process, followed by growth and development, human needs, and family as secondary organizers to structure contents of programme course. Identifying a curriculum by its organizers is useful to curriculum practice and research. Nursing faculty can use the identified organizers as primary or secondary organizers in designing, changing or evaluating their curriculum. It is also possible to use a nursing model with the identified organizers for an effective curriculum structure. Research studies on conceptual frameworks could use primary and secondary organizers to compare strength and weakness among different nursing curriculum structures.

RESUMEN

This study has two parts. In the first part, current nursing courses in 18 baccalaureate nursing programs of Canada are examined to find out how traditional nursing courses have been changed. Major trends of nursing courses are identified, and two major types of current nursing courses are identified. In the second part, 16 nursing textbooks [child nursing (8); medical-surgical nursing (8)] are examined to see how they have changed to reflect the newer nursing curricula. Textbook and chapter content organizers commonly used in nursing textbooks are identified. Contents organizers currently used in nursing textbooks are argued to be ineffective for students' knowledge integration and knowledge development within the nursing profession. This position and its implications are discussed, and two approaches to developing textbooks are suggested.
