RESUMEN

Hypertension and dyslipidemia are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Studies on the association between abnormal levels of lipids and hypertension have yielded inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia and its risk factors in young Polish adults. Furthermore, the association between plasma lipid levels and the risk of hypertension was determined. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 115 volunteer participants. Blood pressure was measured using an automated oscillometric sphygmomanometer. Blood lipids were analyzed from a fasting blood sample received by finger prick. Body fat percentage was assessed using a bioelectrical impedance analysis device. Socioeconomic and lifestyle factors (age, date of birth, place of residence, screen time, and tobacco use) were self-reported by the participant. The prevalence of hypertension was higher in men than in women (61.5 vs. 21.3%). The prevalence of elevated TC, TG, high LDL, and low HDL was 22.6%, 7.8%, 38.3%, and 13.9%, respectively. Spending more than 2 h daily in front of a computer was identified as a significant predictor of hypertension and elevated TG levels (p < 0.05). A high number of cigarettes smoked daily was a significant risk factor for hypertension (p = 0.047). Hypertension contributed to a higher risk of abnormal values of TC (OR = 5.89), LDL (OR = 5.38), and TG (OR = 9.75). Participants with hypertension were more likely than normotensive subjects to have elevated levels of TC, LDL, and TG. The prevalence of hypertension was significantly higher in young men than in women. BMI was associated with the prevalence of hypertension and elevated TC levels. Spending more than 2 h per day in front of a computer contributed to the prevalence of hypertension and elevated TG levels. Participants with hypertension smoked a higher number of cigarettes daily compared to those with normotension.

Introduction: Food selection among adults and mostly children depends mainly on the taste of a dish. Poor taste sensitivity as well as strong preferences for sweet and fat taste may be the factors predisposing children to become overweight and/or develop obesity. Family environment, including mothers' eating habits and preferences, may affect children's taste perception and preferences. The aim of the study was to assess taste perception and preferences in children and their mothers in relation to their weight status. Methods: Sensory tests were carried out using puddings with different sugar and fat content. In all study participants anthropometric measurements (weight and height with BMI calculation) were performed. Results: The study results did not reveal any differences in the taste sensitivity of overweight/obese and normative body weight children. Similarity was found in the perception of different levels of sweet/fat flavors among children and parents. Overweight/obese children were two times more likely to choose a very fat and very sweet taste compared to normal weight children. The results showed that children prefer a sweet taste more often than their mothers. Mothers' fat taste preferences were important - the fatter the taste they selected, the greater the percentage of children with obesity. Discussion: Mothers' taste sensitivity may affect children's perception of the quality (intensity) of flavors. Normal-weight children chose a low fat and low sweet taste more frequently than those with excess of body weight. The role of parents in shaping taste preferences is of utmost importance and should be based on limiting the consumption of products rich in sugar and/or fat.

Differences in the ability to identify and perceive tastes and smells might influence food consumption and, ultimately, chronic nutrition-related conditions such as overweightness and obesity. This study aimed to investigate the associations between taste sensitivity and odour function, anthropometry, and quantity of fungiform papillae in children at age 11-15. Taste strips (4 base tastes), U-Sniff sticks (12 selected smells), and a filter paper strip impregnated with 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) were used. The photographic method was used to estimate the number of fungiform papillae (FP) on the tongue. The results showed that the quantity of FP was not related to anthropometry or gender. The taste test total scores were higher for girls, for whom the median score was 14 (12.0-15.0), than for boys, for whom the median score was 12 (9.0-13.0). Of the children, 13.9% had some difficulty in identifying odours. The Mann-Whitney U test showed that children who were most sensitive to bitter taste had more FP (p = 0.0001). The median score for this group (score = 4) was 34.0 (27.0-37.0). For those who had some problems with correctly assessing all bitter taste strips (score = 0-3), the median score was 24.0 (20.0-31.0). Higher numbers of FP were also observed in tasters, that is, people sensitive to PROP, than in nontasters. Only some measures of the taste function correlated with each other, but not very significantly. We concluded that there are multiple perceptual phases of taste, with no single measure able to entirely represent the sense of taste.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of mothers' gestational weight gain (GWG) and age at birth on the long-term risk of overweight and obesity in preschool and school-aged children. METHODS: The study involved 749 mothers and children at ages between four and 15 years old. Each child was assessed for height and body weight, and then, the body mass category was determined based on the body mass index (BMI) percentile according to the sex and age of the subjects. Information on the perinatal risk factors for overweight and obesity came from the child's health card or mother's maternity card. They contained information about the mother's age at the time of childbirth and the mother's gestational weight gain during pregnancy. RESULTS: In the group of 7-11-year-olds, the maternal weight gain during pregnancy was higher in obese children than in children with normal weight (18.8 kg vs. 14.3 kg; p = 0.002). This relationship was shown analogously in the group of 7-11-years-olds boys (20.6 kg vs. 15.1 kg; p = 0.005). Positive correlations were also shown between mother's gestational weight gain and the BMI percentage of the whole group (p = 0.004). In the case of the mother's age, no statistically significant relationship was found with the child's weight category. CONCLUSIONS: Mothers' weight gain during pregnancy is a factor that promotes overweightness and obesity in the child. Maternal age at birth does not appear to lead to any propensity toward overweightness and obesity in the later life of a child.

Strong preferences for sweet and fat tastes (characters) are associated with the consumption of foods high in calories. The taste preferences, especially the sweet and fat tastes (characters), might be one of the factors predisposing children to become overweight and/or develop obesity. The aim of the study is to assess taste preferences in children and their mothers in association with their weight status. In the study, 150 children aged 8-15 were included; among them, 75 had overweight and/or obesity, and 150 mothers of whom 69 were overweight and/or obese. Body composition estimates were obtained using a bioelectrical impedance analysis-body height was measured using a stadiometerSeca 213. Sensory tests were carried out using apple juice of various sugar content and crackers of various fat content. Results show that children prefer a sweet taste more often than their mothers (50.0% vs. 35.3%, p = 0.009). In the group of children who preferred the high-sweet taste, there were twice as many obese children when compared to the group who preferred the low-sweet taste. Similar relationships applied to mothers. Preferences for fat taste (character) among mothers increased the risk of obesity among their children (39% vs. 20%; p = 0.039). Taste preferences, especially a sweet taste preference, seem to be one of the important factors determining overweight and obesity in children and adults. The fat taste(character) preferences in mothers correlate with the overweight and/or obesity of their children, while such preferences among children were not significantly different irrespective of body weight status.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a child's diet in the first year of life (breastfeeding duration, introduction of solid meals to the diet, the time of starting nutrition consistent with an adult diet) on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschool age. Three-hundred children aged 4-6 were included in the analysis. The children's height and body weight were assessed and their body mass category was determined based on the BMI (Body Mass Index) percentile. Parents provided a photocopy of the child's health book (with information concerning breastfeeding period, start of eating the same meals as the rest of the family, etc.). Obese children were breastfed for the shortest time, cow's milk was introduced to their diets the earliest, they started eating the same food as the rest of the family the earliest, and they received vegetables, fruits, cereals, and meat products in their diet the latest. The results of this study suggest that extending the breastfeeding period beyond 6 months, starting to feed the child the same meals as the rest of the family after 12 months of age, and later introduction of cow's milk to the diet would reduce the risk of the occurrence of excessive body weight in preschool children.

Background and Objectives: Eating habits acquired or changed during childhood are likely to track into adulthood. Due to the fact that nutritional behaviours are not so strongly formed among children, it is easier to change and develop them in children than in adults. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of selected sociodemographic factors affecting fruit and vegetable consumption (i.e., age, parents' body mass index, parents' level education, duration of breastfeeding, child's time spent in front of computer/television) among children in school canteens. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 106 participants (52 girls, 54 boys) aged 6-12. The frequency of consuming fruits and vegetables at a school canteen was assessed using bar code cards for two weeks. Body composition estimates were obtained using a foot-to-foot bioelectrical impedance analysis, body height was measured using a stadiometer Seca 213. The questionnaire contained questions about selected factors which can have an influence on fruit and vegetable consumption. In the study group, 13.2% of participants were overweight and 17.9% were obese. Results: Our results showed a statistically significant relationship between age and fruit and vegetable consumption, and it increased with age in both sexes. Conclusions: Bearing in mind the various conditions discussed when shaping the eating habits of pre-school- and early-school-aged children, the importance of proper nutritional education should be stressed both among children and parents.

BACKGROUND: Associations between physical activity and lipid/lipoprotein levels and body composition among pediatric populations are not completely consistent in the literature. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to analyze lipid and lipoprotein profiles and body composition among children and adolescents differentiated according to their level of physical activity. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 69 participants that ranged from 6 to 17 years of age. Objective measures of physical activity were obtained over 7 days with accelerometers. Total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides (TG) were measured from a fasting blood sample. High-risk values for these lipids/lipoproteins were determined using age- and sex-specific thresholds. Body composition estimates were obtained using a foot-to-foot bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS: Almost half (47.8%) of the participants did not meet daily moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) recommendations. This group had lower free fat mass (by 5.51%), muscle mass content (by 5.17%), and a higher risk for abnormal HDL level (OR = 4.19) and excessive body fat content (OR = 3.05). CONCLUSIONS: Participants who met daily recommended MVPA were found to have more favorable HDL and body fat levels compared to those who did not meet these recommendations.
