RESUMEN
A 13-year-old male neutered domestic shorthaired cat had repeated syncopal episodes over a 6 month period, which had variable duration and continued to increase in frequency. Intermittent ventricular asystole, due to complete heart block, and hyperthyroidism were documented. As the syncopal episodes did not respond to a 4-week medical treatment and symptoms became severe, a transvenous ventricular demand pacemaker system (VVIM) was implanted via the external jugular vein. The unipolar lead was tunneled subcutaneously and connected with the generator in a preformed ventral abdominal muscle pocket. During follow up of 18-months there were no recurrences of the syncopal episodes.
RESUMEN
Thirty-five young cats were studied by echocardiography from the 2nd to 12th weeks of life to analyze correlation between body weight, body surface area, age and heart rate with fourteen echocardiographic parameters. There was a positive linear correlation (r = 0.49-0.78) between the independent variables (body weight, body surface area, age) and left ventricular wall thickness and diameter, aortic diameter and left atrial diameter, whereas there was a negative correlation (r = -0.39 and r = -0.43) between the heart rate and left ventricular diameter during systole and diastole. No linear dependence of the fractional shortening, ejection fraction, percentage thickening of the interventricular septum and left ventricular posterior wall, LA/AO ratio, and the ratio IVSED/LVWED to the independent variables was observed.

Valvular pulmonic stenosis was diagnosed in three dogs with an age between four and eight months. The clinical signs related the severeness of the stenosis. The three dogs showed electrocardiographic and radiographic evidence of right ventricular enlargement. The haemodynamic assessment was based on Doppler echocardiography and cardiac catheterisation. The bloodflow above the pulmonic valve was 4.8; 5.8 and 6.0 m/sec; the systolic pressure gradient between the right ventricle and the pulmonic artery 115, 110 and 122 mmHg. Because of the severeness and localisation of the stenosis the three dogs underwent balloon valvuloplasty. After management the dogs showed a decrease of the systolic pressure gradient (40 and 45 mmHg) and a decrease of the transvalvular bloodflow (1.8; 2.1 and 4.4 m/sec). Some days after the intervention the dogs were clinically asymptomatic. This paper shows that balloon valvuloplasty is a proper technique for relief of valvular pulmonic stenosis in the dog.

Eight cats and one dog with signs of cervical ventroflexion, reluctance to walk, a stiff and stilted gait and muscle weakness are introduced. Though blood potassium concentration was very low (< 3.0 mval/l) in one cat and the dog only, a potassium depletion myopathy was assumed as the cause of these symptoms. Two of three cats had elevated values of the urinary fractional potassium excretion compared to ten healthy cats. Blood creatinine values were within normal ranges. Five of seven cats had elevated creatine kinase values. All animals improved after potassium substitution. Causes of potassium depletion are discussed and differential diagnoses of myopathies are briefly mentioned.

In 37 healthy pups and seven pups with congenital pulmonic stenosis ECG were recorded and the heart rate determined. Between the first week of life in healthy pups (mean = 230/min) and the twelfth week of life the heart rate in both groups at six weeks was 195/min and 180/min. At the end of the investigation the averaged heart rate was 167/min or 166/min respectively. In single weeks during the investigation a slightly increased heart rate occurred in a few dogs between the fourth and sixth week of life owing to an increased restlessness during this time span. The heart rate of newborn pups at the first day (mean = 215/min) was a little lower than the average in the first week of life.
