A cytopathic rotavirus was isolated from calves with symptoms of diarrhea and underwent 15 passages in bovine embryo kidney cell culture. The specificity of the isolate was confirmed by the neutralization test, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy. The CPE of the isolated in bovine embryo kidney cells was similar to that of the reference strain.

The problems of virus carrier state in influenza are connected with two aspects of the disease: the duration of virus antigen persistence in convalescents and changes of influenza virus properties in the course of persistence. In the present study, natural influenza infection in chickens caused by influenza A/chicken/USSR/336/74 virus (Hav6H3--N2) was used to determine the duration of virus antigen persistence (up to 60 days) and the entire period of virus isolation from the survivers (up to 30 days). Administration of hydrocortisone on the 50th day of convalescence permitted to obtain from the chickens several influenza A virus isolates antigenically unrelated to the epizootic strain either in hemagglutinin or in neuraminidase. Cultivation of isolate No. 42 (Hav7Neq1) in the presence of the homologous serum yielded strain 42' which was neutralized by the serum to Hav6H3--N2 virus. The isolates differed from the epizootic virus by their biological properties: the eluting activity, pathogenesis and morphology. The above facts of antigenic variability are considered in the light of the antigenic heterogeneity of the natural virus population and the possibility of virus activation by the provoking effect of extreme conditions on the carriers of latent infection.

In examination of colonial birds in the Volga delta in the Astrakhan region (188 bioassays from 229 birds) and in the Komandorskie Islands of the Kamchatka region (244 bioassays from 208 birds) in 1974, 15 strains of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) were isolated (8 strains from 7 birds and 7 strains from 12 birds, respectively). The strains were isolated from Egretta alba and Ardea cinerea, and Phalacracorax carbo in the Astrakhan region and from Lunda cirrhata and Uria aalge in the Komandorskie Islands. The isolates were obtained from tracheal and cloacal washings and from pools of viscera. These data are the first evidence of the existence of Newcastle disease virus foci in the USSR.

A modification of Jerne and Nordin's method of local hemolysis for detection of antiviral antibody-synthesizing cells is described. CrCl3 was used as the coupling agent. This method is simple enough but it requires either highly purified virus antigen or viruses propagated in a heterologous culture.
