Radioisotopes were used to study the water spaces of the bone and bone marrow in 47 dogs with a created model of acute osteomyelitis. By the 3rd-5th day of experimental osteomyelitis sharp hyperhydration of the bone marrow and bone proper was revealed which was caused by a 2.5-2.8-fold increase of the volume of intercellular fluid in the zone of the affection, leading to circulatory disorders and necrosis. Dehydration of the tissues is accomplished by inflicting numerous percutaneous osteoperforations (NPO) with Kirschner's wire. The osteoperforations are made not at random but in a regular manner through both walls of the bone in two interperpendicular planes. Circulation in the zone of the affection is restored in this case and osteonecrosis in prevented. Conservative methods of treatment of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis were developed according to the stage of its development and were applied in 168 patients whose ages ranged from 20 days to 14 years; in 75% of patients who were admitted in the early stages of AHO the disease took and abrupt course. In patients with neglected forms of AHO three-fourfold infliction of NPO in the subacute stage produced a stimulating effect on reparative regeneration in the zones of osteonecrosis and the forming sequestra.

The article is based on 28 experimental studies and 74 clinical observations. The authors have distinguished fascial-cellular spaces of the mediastinum, noted their developmental changes and topographo-anatomical relationships, determined possible ways of spreading the pyo-inflammatory process in the mediastinal fat in children of different age groups. Substantiation of methods of drainage in acute suppurative mediastinitis is given in the age aspect, as well as the method of local detoxication. Differential approach to children with this critical pathology resulted in recovery of 64 of 74 sick children.

The authors discuss experience in 168 operations for extirpation and segmental resection of affected bronchi in children with bronchiectases. To prevent recanalization of the bronchus after its segmental resection and to prevent the formation of an abscess in the isolated part of the lung they suggest a method for intraoperative packing of the remaining bronchi with biopolymer material.

The article deals with the results of experimental study on 225 inbred albino rats and experience in the treatment of 143 children with terminal and toxic phases of diffuse peritonitis by correction of the pH of the abdominal cavity medium with standard trisamine solution with one-stage and prolonged peritoneosorption by hemodes under conditions of closed and open management of the abdominal cavity.

The author describes methods of the ultrasonic thoracoscopic sanitation of the empyema cavity, ultrasonic thoracoscopic decortication of the lung used in 76 patients with different forms of pleura empyema. In 62 of them clinical healing was noted.
