In biological systems, nanoparticles interact with biomolecules, which may undergo protein corona formation that can result in noncontrolled aggregation. Therefore, comprehending the behavior and evolution of nanoparticles in the presence of biological fluids is paramount in nanomedicine. However, traditional lab-based colloid methods characterize diluted suspensions in low-complexity media, which hinders in-depth studies in complex biological environments. Here, we apply X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to investigate silica nanoparticles (SiO2) in various environments, ranging from low to high complex biological media. Interestingly, SiO2 revealed Brownian motion behavior, irrespective of the complexity of the chosen media. Moreover, the SiO2 surface and media composition were tailored to underline the differences between a corona-free system from protein corona and aggregates formation. Our results highlighted XPCS potential for real-time nanoparticle analysis in biological media, surpassing the limitations of conventional techniques and offering deeper insights into colloidal behavior in complex environments.

The escalating prevalence of drug-resistant pathogens not only jeopardizes the effectiveness of existing treatments but also increases the complexity and severity of infectious diseases. Escherichia coli is one the most common pathogens across all healthcare-associated infections. Enzymatic treatment of bacterial biofilms, targeting extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), can be used for EPS degradation and consequent increase in susceptibility of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics. Here, we characterized three recombinant cellulases from Thermothelomyces thermophilus: a cellobiohydrolase I (TthCel7A), an endoglucanase (TthCel7B), and a cellobiohydrolase II (TthCel6A) as tools for hydrolysis of E. coli and Gluconacetobacter hansenii biofilms. Using a design mixture approach, we optimized the composition of cellulases, enhancing their synergistic activity to degrade the biofilms and significantly reducing the enzymatic dosage. In line with the crystalline and ordered structure of bacterial cellulose, the mixture of exo-glucanases (0.5 TthCel7A:0.5 TthCel6A) is effective in the hydrolysis of G. hansenii biofilm. Meanwhile, a mixture of exo- and endo-glucanases is required for the eradication of E. coli 042 and clinical E. coli biofilms with significantly different proportions of the enzymes (0.56 TthCel7B:0.44 TthCel6A and 0.6 TthCel7A:0.4 TthCel7B, respectively). X-ray diffraction pattern and crystallinity index of E. coli cellulose are comparable to those of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) substrate. Our results illustrate the complexity of E. coli biofilms and show that successful hydrolysis is achieved by a specific combination of cellulases, with consistent recurrence of TthCel7B endoglucanase.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 pandemics on clinical and surgical practice, educational activities, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urology residents after 1 year of socio-economic restrictions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic survey was e-mailed to all postgraduate (PG) students registered by the Brazilian Society of Urology. The survey inclu-ded an assessment of socio-demographic, clinical practice, educational, health-related and behavior parameters. We also evaluated which subareas of urology were predominantly affected. A similar survey was adapted and sent to the directors of all urology residency programs. RESULTS: COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the clinical, surgical, and educational activities of urology residents in Brazil. Urology residents reported >50% decrease in multiple surgical modalities. We highlight kidney transplantation surgeries (66.2%), minor surgeries (62.3%), endoscopic surgeries (42.6%) and reconstructive surgeries (38.8%). This could represent a critical skills gap that residents may face beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, PG students faced stressful situations that caused worsening of mental and physical health, such as getting redirected to assistance of COVID-19 patients (66.9%), and high rate of infection by SARS-CoV-2 (58.2%). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the clinical, surgical, and educational activities of urology residents in Brazil. This could represent a critical skills gap that residents may face beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. PG students faced stressful situations that caused worsening of mental and physical health such as redirection to assistance of COVID-19 patients, concern about their own contamination and of family members.

The Omaha System has been providing a useful clinical documentation structure for health practice, education, and research since 1975. To understand its current applications, we updated a literature review from 2013, using the same descriptors ('Omaha System') which resulted in 559 documents. After applying filters and different forms of screening, 35 papers published from 2012 to 2022 composed the final sample for the review. From its critical analysis we realized that the Omaha System is still a valuable tool for the evaluation of health care outcomes in a variety of settings. Its benefits include promoting communication, supporting evidence-based dec;ision-making, and improving the quality of care and it is interoperable with other classifications and terminologies in healthcare. The use of the Omaha System still enables a consistent integration between patient, community, and health professionals, ensuring the collection and analysis of data that contributes to holistic care in a multidisciplinary approach.

My Strengths My Health (MSMH) is a simplified version of the Omaha System developed for the use of patients and their caregivers. Its main objective is to enable a whole-person assessment with the participation of the patients in understanding the concepts that comprise their care plan. Since 2021, we joined a worldwide initiative to translate MSMH to other languages and this paper reports the Brazilian experience in 3 stages, developed from January 2022 to December 2023: translation and back translation of terms, its validation by freshman nursing students and its adoption by patients at an outpatient facility. Among the results, we highlight the patients' comments on the perceived ease of use of the system. MSMH adoption by caregivers and populations of different cultures and languages can amplify the comprehension of biological, psychological, social, spiritual and environmental determinants of health worldwide specially if issues on digital health literacy are considered.

Helminth infections, which affect approximately 1.5 billion individuals worldwide (mainly children), are common in low- and middle-income tropical countries and can lead to various diseases. One crucial factor affecting the occurrence of these diseases is the reduced diversity of the gut microbiome due to antibiotic use. This reduced diversity compromises immune health in hosts and alters host gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms. Helminth infections may produce complex biochemical signatures that could serve as therapeutic targets. Such therapies include next-generation probiotics, live biotherapeutic products, and biochemical drug approaches. Probiotics can bind ferric hydroxide, reducing the iron that is available to opportunistic microorganisms. They also produce short-chain fatty acids associated with immune response modulation, oral tolerance facilitation, and inflammation reduction. In this review, we examine the potential link between these effects and epigenetic changes in immune response-related genes by analyzing methyltransferase-related genes within probiotic strains discussed in the literature. The identified genes were only correlated with methylation in bacterial genes. Various metabolic interactions among hosts, helminth parasites, and intestinal microbiomes can impact the immune system, potentially aiding or hindering worm expulsion through chemical signaling. Implementing a comprehensive strategy using probiotics may reduce the impact of drug-resistant helminth strains.

Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is characterised as a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton. The force platform is an option for performing the postural assessment of these individuals. Objectives: To review and evaluate the behaviour of the centre of pressure (CoP) variables during the postural control examination in patients with AS compared to a control group. Method: A systematic review, registered in PROSPERO, that followed the PRISMA Statement. A search was carried out in the following databases: Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Scielo, from 1945 to 2023. Studies were selected that aimed to understand the use of the force platform for the assessment of postural control. The risk of bias assessment was performed using the AXIS tool. Results: Five studies were included, with a total of 247 participants. The assessment of risk of bias presented high scores in the AXIS tool. Patients with a diagnosis of AS presented increased thoracic kyphosis in most of the studies, as well as large displacements in the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions, and altered total mean velocity (TMV) and frequency, indicating worse postural stability. Regarding the functional status, the most used questionnaires were the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI) and Bath Ankylosing Disease Activity Index (BASDAI). Conclusion: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis present postural instability, verified by means of higher values of centre of posture variables. Clinical implications: Individuals with ankylosing spondylitis presented postural instability and balance deficit. Therefore, exercises for balance training and postural control are essential in the clinical management of these patients.

Lettuce is an important cool-temperature crop, and its principal abiotic stress is low heat tolerance. Lettuce production has become more challenging in the context of global warming changes. Hence, the main objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between stability and lettuce heat tolerance. Field and greenhouse trials were run in 2015 (summer) and 2016 (fall and spring). The environments were composed of a combination of season and place (field, glass, and plastic greenhouse), and the assessed genotypes were BRS Leila and Mediterrânea, Elisa, Everglades, Simpson, and Vanda. Statistical analysis showed a significant effect (p < 0.05) of environments (E), genotypes (G), and the GEI. BRS Leila, Elisa, and BRS Mediterrânea showed the greatest means to the first anthesis in suitable environments (milder temperatures). Among these cultivars, BRS Mediterrânea was the most stable and adapted to hot environments. The environmental conditions studied in this research, mainly high temperatures, could become a reality in many lettuce-producing areas. Therefore, the results can help indicate and develop lettuce varieties with greater heat tolerance.

Objective: Determine the reliability of three different methods of evaluating bone shortening in displaced midshaft clavicle fractures (DCMF). Method: A cross-sectional analytical study evaluated bone shortening by metric tape (MT), radiography (X-ray), and computed tomography (CT). Twenty-six men had been evaluated and used clavícula not broken as control. The collection of data was of the blind type for three specialists. Differences and reliability were analyzed with the Friedman and Kappa tests and validated with the T-test (CI: 95%; significance index p<0.05; Software "R" version 3.2.2). Results: The MT measurements (control) showed abnormal distribution and significant statistical difference concerning the imaging tests (p=0.000008). There was a similarity between X-ray and CT and Kappa agreement of 0.65. The fractured clavicles presented similar measurements between the three methods (p=0.059), and the T-tests proved that the similarity was caused by chance or possible measurement errors. Conclusion: Measurement by metric tape showed a tendency to overestimate bone shortening. The CT showed more reliable results for the diagnosis; however, the X-ray was sufficient for decision-making by surgeons, and therefore, it is not possible to rule out the importance of this resource for DCMF. Objetivo: Determinar a confiabilidade de três diferentes métodos de avaliação do encurtamento ósseo em fraturas deslocadas do eixo médio da clavícula (FDEMC). Método: Estudo analítico transversal que avaliou o encurtamento ósseo por fita métrica (FM), radiografia (X-Ray) e tomografia computadorizada (TC). Foram avaliados 26 homens utilizando a clavícula não fraturada como controle. A coleta de dados foi do tipo cega por três especialistas. As diferenças e a confiabilidade foram analisadas com os testes de Friedman e Kappa e validados com o teste T (IC:95%; índice de significância p<0,05; Software "R" versão 3.2.2). Resultados: As medidas de FM (controle), apresentaram distribuição anormal e diferença estatísfica significativa em relação aos exames de imagem (p=0,000008). Houve semelhança entre radiografia e TC, concordância Kappa 0,65. As clavículas fraturadas apresentaram medidas semelhantes entre os três métodos (p=0,059) e os testes-T comprovaram que a semelhança foi provocada casualmente ou possíveis erros de medição. Conclusão: A medição por fita métrica apresentou tendência em superestimação do encurtamento ósseo. A TC apresentou resultados mais confiáveis para o diagnóstico, contudo, a radiografia foi suficiente para tomada de decisão dos cirurgiões e por isso, não é possível descartar a importância deste recurso para FDEMC. Periodontal disease is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory disease that affects the tissues that support the teeth, while leukemia is a type of malignous cancer that affects the production of blood cells. Recent studies suggest that immune response and microbial disbiosis related to periodontal disease may be associated with an increased risk of developing leukemia and may affect its prognosis, as well as leukemia type and treatment may also have effects on the periodontium, demanding a interdiscipinary approach of these patients. The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review to assess the association between periodontal disease and leukemia in adult patients. An electronic database serch using the descriptors was performed. Clinical studies with periodontal examination in adult individuals with leukemia were selected. After literature search, 9 studies were reviewed. Gingival bleeding and periodontal pockets were frequent findings. Periodontitis prevalence varied among studies, ranging from 29% to 82,4% in patients diagnosed with leukemia. The relationship between periodontal disease and leukemia is complex and multifaceted and there are few studies available in adults, with heterogeneous exam protocols. Still, the high prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis found in the studies suggest that periodontal diagnosis and treatment could be a helpful tool to prevent further complications in leukemia treatment.
A doença periodontal é uma doença inflamatória crônica altamente prevalente e que afeta os tecidos que sustentam os dentes, enquanto a leucemia é um tipo de câncer maligno que afeta a produção de células sanguíneas. Estudos recentes sugerem que a resposta imune e a disbiose microbiana relacionada a doença periodontal podem estar associadas a um risco aumentado de desenvolver leucemia e pode afetar o prognóstico da doença, assim como o tipo de leucemia e o tratamento também podem ter efeitos no periodonto, exigindo uma abordagem interdisciplinar desses pacientes. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão de literatura para avaliar a associação entre doença periodontal e leucemia em pacientes adultos. Foi realizada uma busca eletrônica em bancos de dados utilizando os descritores. Foram selecionados estudos clínicos com exame periodontal em indivíduos adultos com leucemia. Após busca na literatura, 9 estudos foram revisados. Sangramento gengival e bolsas periodontais foram achados frequentes. A prevalência da periodontite variou entre os estudos, sendo de 29% a 82,4% em pacientes diagnosticados com leucemia. A relação entre doença periodontal e leucemia é complexa e multifacetada e existem poucos estudos disponíveis em adultos, com protocolos de exames heterogêneos. Ainda assim, a alta prevalência de gengivite e periodontite encontrada nos estudos sugere que o diagnóstico e o tratamento periodontal podem ser uma ferramenta útil para prevenir maiores complicações no tratamento da leucemia.

BACKGROUND: Adopting advanced digital technologies as diagnostic support tools in healthcare is an unquestionable trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, their accuracy in suggesting diagnoses remains controversial and needs to be explored. We aimed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of two free accessible internet search tools: Google and ChatGPT 3.5. METHODS: To assess the effectiveness of both medical platforms, we conducted evaluations using a sample of 60 clinical cases related to urological pathologies. We organized the urological cases into two distinct categories for our analysis: (i) prevalent conditions, which were compiled using the most common symptoms, as outlined by EAU and UpToDate guidelines, and (ii) unusual disorders, identified through case reports published in the 'Urology Case Reports' journal from 2022 to 2023. The outcomes were meticulously classified into three categories to determine the accuracy of each platform: "correct diagnosis", "likely differential diagnosis", and "incorrect diagnosis". A group of experts evaluated the responses blindly and randomly. RESULTS: For commonly encountered urological conditions, Google's accuracy was 53.3%, with an additional 23.3% of its results falling within a plausible range of differential diagnoses, and the remaining outcomes were incorrect. ChatGPT 3.5 outperformed Google with an accuracy of 86.6%, provided a likely differential diagnosis in 13.3% of cases, and made no unsuitable diagnosis. In evaluating unusual disorders, Google failed to deliver any correct diagnoses but proposed a likely differential diagnosis in 20% of cases. ChatGPT 3.5 identified the proper diagnosis in 16.6% of rare cases and offered a reasonable differential diagnosis in half of the cases. CONCLUSION: ChatGPT 3.5 demonstrated higher diagnostic accuracy than Google in both contexts. The platform showed satisfactory accuracy when diagnosing common cases, yet its performance in identifying rare conditions remains limited.

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with psychiatric disorders and behavioral phenotypes such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Considering that vitamin D levels are polygenic, we aim to evaluate the overall effects of its genetic architecture on symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity and on the serum levels of vitamin D in two independent samples of adults, as well as the specific effects of five relevant polymorphisms in vitamin D-related genes. METHODS: We evaluated 870 subjects from an ADHD sample (407 cases and 463 controls) and 319 subjects from an academic community (nutrigenetic sample). Vitamin D serum levels were obtained through Elisa test and genetic data by TaqMan™ allelic discrimination and Infinium PsychArray-24 BeadChip genotyping. Polygenic Scores (PGS) were calculated on PRSice2 based on the latest GWAS for Vitamin D and statistical analyses were conducted at Plink and SPSS software. RESULTS: Vitamin D PGSs were associated with inattention in the ADHD sample and with hyperactivity when inattention symptoms were included as covariates. In the nutrigenetic sample, CYP2R1 rs10741657 and DHCR7 rs12785878 were nominally associated with impulsivity and hyperactivity, respectively, and both with vitamin D levels. In the clinical sample, RXRG rs2134095 was associated with impulsivity. DISCUSSION: Our findings suggest a shared genetic architecture between vitamin D levels and ADHD symptoms, as evidenced by the associations observed with PGS and specific genes related to vitamin D levels. Interestingly, differential effects for vitamin D PGS were found in inattention and hyperactivity, which should be considered in further studies involving ADHD.

Exercise elicits physiological adaptations, including hyperpnea. However, the mechanisms underlying exercise-induced hyperpnea remain unresolved. Skeletal muscle acts as a secretory organ, releasing irisin (IR) during exercise. Irisin can cross the blood-brain barrier, influencing muscle and tissue metabolism, as well as signaling in the central nervous system (CNS). We evaluated the effect of intracerebroventricular or intraperitoneal injection of IR in adult male rats on the cardiorespiratory and metabolic function during sleep-wake cycle under room air, hypercapnia and hypoxia. Central IR injection caused an inhibition on ventilation (VE) during wakefulness under normoxia, while peripheral IR reduced VE during sleep. Additionally, central IR exacerbates hypercapnic hyperventilation by increasing VE and reducing oxygen consumption. As to cardiovascular regulation, central IR caused an increase in heart rate (HR) across all conditions, while no change was observed following peripheral administration. Finally, central IR attenuated the hypoxia-induced regulated hypothermia and increase sleep episodes, while peripheral IR augmented CO2-induced hypothermia, during wakefulness. Overall, our results suggest that IR act mostly on CNS exerting an inhibitory effect on breathing under resting conditions, while stimulating the hypercapnic ventilatory response and increasing HR. Therefore, IR seems not to be responsible for the exercise-induced hyperpnea, but contributes to the increase in HR.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) patients are at higher risk of developing silent cerebral infarcts and overt stroke, which may reflect cognitive impairment, functional limitations, and worse quality of life. The cognitive function of Brazilian adult SCD patients (n = 124; 19-70 years; 56 men; 79 SS, 28 SC, 10 S/ß0, 7 S/ß+) was screened through Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and correlated the results with possible predictive factors for test performance, including sociocultural, clinical, laboratory data and brain imaging. The Median MoCA score was 23 (8-30); 70% had a 25-or-less score, suggesting some level of cognitive impairment. There were no significant associations between MoCA results and any clinical or laboratory data in SS and SC patients; however, a significant correlation (P = 0.03) with stroke was found in HbS/ß-thalassemic patients. Correlations were further detected according to sociodemographic conditions, such as age (r = -0.316; P < 0.001), age at first job (r = 0.221; P = 0.018), personal (r = 0.23; P = 0.012) and per capita familiar incomes (r = 0.303; P = 0.001), personal (r = 0.61; P = 0), maternal (r = 0.536; P = 0), and paternal educational status (r = 0.441; P = 0). We further sought independent predictors of performance using multivariable regressions and increased education was an independent predictor of better scores in MoCA (0.8099, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.509-1.111). Brain imaging analysis showed significant and progressive atrophy in important cerebral areas related to memory, learning, and executive function. These data point to the high prevalence and impact of cognitive decline in adult SCD patients, mirrored in brain atrophic areas. It is also possible to observe the influence of sociodemographic conditions on patients' cognitive performances and the need for creating focused therapeutic plans that address these deficiencies. Moreover, the absence of a significant correlation of MoCA values with stroke in the SS and SC groups may be related to the worst sociocultural and economic conditions of the Brazilian African descent population, in which the impact of low educational stimulation on cognitive function can outweigh even the anatomical damage caused by the disease.

Curcumin, a natural polyphenolic component from Curcuma longa roots, is the main bioactive component of turmeric spice and has gained increasing interest due to its proposed anti-cancer, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering effects, in addition to its thermogenic capacity. While intake from dietary sources such as curry may be sufficient to affect the intestinal microbiome and thus may act indirectly, intact curcumin in the body may be too low (<1 microM) and not sufficient to affect signaling and gene expression, as observed in vitro with cultured cells (10-20 microM). Several strategies can be envisioned to increase curcumin levels in the body, such as decreasing its metabolism or increasing absorption through the formation of nanoparticles. However, since high curcumin levels could also lead to undesired regulatory effects on cellular signaling and gene expression, such studies may need to be carefully monitored. Here, we review the bioavailability of curcumin and to what extent increasing curcumin levels using nanoformulations may increase the bioavailability and bioactivity of curcumin and its metabolites. This enhancement could potentially amplify the disease-preventing effects of curcumin, often by leveraging its robust antioxidant properties.

OBJECTIVE: To report on the adaptations made to the original Nominal Group Technique (NGT), allowing it to be applied to the virtual format, preserving all its key elements. METHOD: An experience report on the adaptations and adjustments made to the original NGT to the virtual format using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), using digital tools that are available free of charge or are low cost and easy to use. RESULTS: The NGT was carried out entirely virtually and underwent adaptations in each of its four stages through the incorporation of specific digital resources. It was possible to present the most voted ideas and obtain final approval from the participants. The participants had no difficulty in using the virtual resources provided and, based on the reaction evaluation, they were satisfied with the tools provided. CONCLUSION: The adapted NGT proved to be an effective method when used in a virtual setting, capable of producing a significant number of ideas and developing consensus. Urban rivers are affected at different levels by the intensification of human activities, representing a serious threat to the maintenance of terrestrial life and sustainable urban development. Consequently, great efforts have been dedicated to the ecological restoration of urban rivers around the world, as a solution to recovering the environmental functionality of these environments. In this sense, the present work aimed to investigate the effectiveness of interventions carried out aimed at the recovery of urban rivers, through a systematic review of the literature between 2010 and 2022, using the search term "rivers recovery." The results showed that there have been notable advances in the implementation of river recovery programs in urban areas around the world between the years analyzed. The ecosystems studied were affected, for the most part, by the increase in the supply of nutrients from domestic and industrial effluents, in addition to having highly urbanized surroundings and with several changes in land use patterns. The preparation of this literature review made it possible to demonstrate that the effectiveness of river recovery is extremely complex, since river recovery projects are developed for different reasons, as well as being carried out in different ways according to the intended objective.

Platynosomum spp. are parasites that inhabit the gallbladder and bile ducts of various mammals and birds worldwide. Most studies of Platynosomum spp. in birds focus on the observation and morphological characterization of the parasite through parasitological or molecular examinations, with scarce literature describing anatomopathological alterations, mainly histopathological. We report the case of a male barn owl infected with Platynosomum spp.. At necropsy, the barn owl showed dilation with parasites and fibrosis of the intrahepatic bile ducts and gallbladder. Microscopically, it was possible to identify trematodes in the bile ducts associated with a lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory infiltrate. The morphological structures of the worms were described on histopathology and direct examination. The presence of parasitism that is usually cosmopolitan in wild animals represents a risk to the biodiversity of fauna in the region, as well as a warning about the spread and maintenance of the biological cycle of the worm in humans and domestic animals.

In Brazil, the genus Bothrops is responsible for most ophidian accidents. Snake venoms have a wide variety of proteins and peptides exhibiting a broad repertoire of pharmacological and toxic effects that elicit systemic injury and characteristic local effects. The snakes' natural resistance to envenomation caused by the presence of inhibitory compounds on their plasma have been extensively studied. However, the presence of these inhibitors in different developmental stages is yet to be further discussed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ontogeny of Bothrops jararaca plasma inhibitor composition and, to this end, plasma samples of B. jararaca were obtained from different developmental stages (neonates, youngs, and adults) and sexes (female and male). SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, affinity chromatography, and mass spectrometry were performed to analyze the protein profile and interaction between B. jararaca plasma and venom proteins. In addition, the presence of γBjPLI, a PLA2 inhibitor previously identified and characterized in B. jararaca serum, was confirmed by Western blotting. According to our results, 9-17% of plasma proteins were capable of binding to venom proteins in the three developmental stages. The presence of different endogenous inhibitors and, more specifically, different PLA2 inhibitor (PLI) classes and antihemorrhagic factors were confirmed in specimens of B. jararaca from newborn by mass spectrometry. For the first time, the αPLI and ßPLI were detected in B. jararaca plasma, although low or no ontogenetic and sexual correlation were found. The γPLI were more abundant in adult female, than in neonate and young female, but similar to neonate, young and adult male according to the results of mass spectrometry analysis. Our results suggest that there are proteins in the plasma of these animals that can help counteract the effects of self-envenomation from birth.

INTRODUCTION: Crossfit is a sport that combines cardio-respiratory and muscle endurance, strength, flexibility, muscle power, speed, coordination, agility and balance. However, there is no information in the literature regarding functional performance of the lower limbs and the endurance of core muscles in this population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between trunk strength/endurance and lower limb function through lower limb symmetry and balance tests. METHODS: Forty-one young adults aged 19-41 years (26.3 ± 5.4) participated, 15 sedentary and 26 cross fit practitioners for at least one year. The tests were as follows: Biering-Sørensen Test of trunk extensor endurance, Trunk Flexors Endurance Test at 60°, Side Plank Endurance Test, Lumbar Dynamometry, Single-Leg Hop Test and Star Excursion Balance Test. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Although there were higher values, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the groups for lower limb symmetry and strength of trunk flexor muscles. For balance, strength and resistance variables of trunk extensor muscles, the values found were higher in crossfit practitioners than in sedentary subjects. CONCLUSION: There is a relationship between trunk muscle strength and endurance and lower limb balance. Moreover, cross fit athletes showed higher values of trunk muscle strength/endurance and lower limb balance compared to sedentary adults.
