BACKGROUND: The uterine cervical length is an important risk factor for preterm birth. The aim of this study was to assess cervical length distribution in women with singleton pregnancies, measured by transvaginal ultrasound between 16 and 24 weeks, and its association with population characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched electronic databases and other sources for studies published from April 1, 1990 to July 21, 2020. Of the 2019 retrieved publications, full-text versions of 137 articles were considered. We included 77 original articles that reported cervical length measurements of 363,431 women. The main aim of this study was to identify the pattern of cervical length in different populations. We collected demographic and clinical data concerning the population, in addition to information regarding the ultrasound examination and cervical length measurement. Regarding study bias, 56 were at low risk of bias and 21 were at medium risk of bias. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 57 articles with data from 158,346 women. The mean cervical length was 37.96. mm (95% CI [36.68, 39.24]). Cervical length was shorter in women from Africa and Asia, in those from low-income countries, with a lower body weight, and in those who delivered before 37 gestational weeks. We found that the cervical length from pooled studies is longer than that usually discussed in the literature. Regarding limitations, we had difficulty assessing our main variable because there was no consistent pattern in the way authors reported cervical length measurement. Another limitation was the great heterogeneity between studies. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a single cutoff value to define a short cervix diagnosis, an important risk factor for preterm birth, may not be correct and cervical length must be considered according to maternal population characteristics. Future studies should identify different specific curves and cutoff values for cervical length in different populations. Foram avaliados 113 equinos adultos, sendo realizadas 12 medidas lineares e 11 angulares de cada animal. Para obtenção das medidas lineares, utilizou-se hipômetro e fita métrica, e, para as medidas angulares, artrogoniômetro e podogoniômetro. Para avaliar e classificar a marcha, os animais foram montados e filmados por vista lateral. Dos 113 animais, 36 (32%) apresentaram marcha incompleta, 74 (65%) marcha completa, e três (3%) a guinilha. Dos equinos com marcha completa, 20 (27%) apresentaram marcha batida, 14 (19%) marcha de centro e 40 (54%) marcha picada. Apenas a medida linear, altura da garupa, apresentou diferença entre os tipos de andamentos (P<0,011). Pode-se concluir que as medidas lineares e angulares dos equinos Campeiros apresentam valores similares entre as variações da marcha, demonstrando equivalente morfologia independentemente da categoria da marcha.(AU)

A vacinação é a forma mais utilizada para prevenir a bronquite infecciosa causada pelo vírus da bronquite infecciosa das galinhas (IBV). Contudo, as vacinas convencionais são incapazes de diferenciar aves infectadas de vacinadas. No presente trabalho foi construído, caracterizado, e avaliado como candidato vacinal, um adenovírus recombinante expressando o gene N do IBV. O gene N foi clonado em um adenovírus humano tipo 5 defectivo e transfectado para as células HEK-293A para gerar rAd5_N. Após o vetor ser obtido como esperado e a confirmação da expressão da proteína N em HEK-293ª, foi realizada inoculação pela via oculo-nasal na dose de 10 7 TCID 50 /0,1mL para imunização de galinhas livres de patógenos específicos (SPF). A resposta imunológica do Ad5_N e a proteção contra o desafio ao IBV foram avaliadas e comparadas com uma vacina viva comercial. Não foram detectados anticorpos anti-IBV em aves vacinadas com o Ad5_N. A vacina comercial induziu anticorpos detectáveis a partir do 7º dia pós-vacinal. Em aves vacinadas com o Ad5_N não houve aumento na expressão de IFNγ. Neste estudo, o rAd5_N obtido não conferiu proteção contra desafio com IBV-M41. Os resultados indicam a necessidade de avaliar adenovírus recombinantes expressando outros genes do IBV.(AU)

OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of maturation and proliferation of epithelial cells and the correlation with immunocytochemical expression of adhesion (E-cadherin) and cell differentiation (involucrin) markers. METHODS: Cytopathological samples were obtained from four groups of patients: control (CG, n=30); alcohol/tobacco (ATG, n=31), leucoplakia (LG, n=31), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCCG, n=22). Cytopathological smears were collected from all groups for AgNOR, Papanicolaou and immunocytochemical staining. RESULTS: There was an increase in anucleated cells in ATG compared to CG and in LG compared to lesion-free groups (P<.05). In addition, there was a higher rate of intermediate cells in lesion-free groups than in LG (P=.001). When these findings were correlated with positive E-cadherin expression, there was a smaller number of anucleated and intermediate cells (P<.05). The proliferation rate was higher in the SCCG than in the CG (P<.05) and in the ATG compared to LG (P<.05). Moreover, cell proliferation increased in the presence of positive E-cadherin expression in the ATG and LG. No statistically significant results were obtained for involucrin analysis. CONCLUSION: Cytopathology combined with quantitative techniques such as Papanicolaou, AgNOR, and immunocytochemical expression of E-cadherin detects changes associated with oral carcinogenesis. The innovative approach used in this study allows assessing the expression of cell adhesion (E-cadherin) and differentiation (involucrin) markers by means of oral mucosal cytopathology. The E-cadherin imunocytochemical expression indicated changes associated with the oral carcinogenesis process. An increase in cell proliferation rate in oral squamous cell carcinoma group was associated with the lower immunoexpression of E-cadherin. Cytopathology combined with quantitative techniques and immunocytochemical expression of E-cadherin may detect early alterations associated with oral carcinogenesis.

The aim of this study was to analyse the oxidative and anti-oxidant status in serum samples from dairy cows naturally infected by Dictyocaulus viviparus and its relation with pathological analyses. The diagnosis of the disease was confirmed by necropsy of one dairy cow with heavy infection by the parasite in the lungs and bronchi. Later, blood and faeces were collected from another 22 cows from the same farm to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities on day 0 (pre-treatment) and day 10 (post-treatment with eprinomectin). Faecal examination confirmed the infection in all lactating cows. However, the number of D. viviparus larvae per gram of faeces varied between animals. Cows showed different degrees of severity according to respiratory clinical signs of the disease (cough and nasal secretion). Further, they were classified and divided into two groups: those with mild (n = 10) and severe disease (n = 12). Increased levels of TBARS (P < 0.001), ROS (P = 0.002) and SOD activity (P < 0.001), as well as reduced CAT activity (P < 0.001) were observed in cows with severe clinical signs of the disease compared to those with mild clinical signs. Eprinomectin treatment (day 10) caused a reduction of ROS levels (P = 0.006) and SOD activity (P < 0.001), and an increase of CAT activity (P = 0.05) compared to day 0 (pre-treatment). TBARS levels did not differ with treatment (P = 0.11). In summary, increased ROS production and lipid peroxidation altered CAT and SOD activities, as an adaptive response against D. viviparus infection, contributing to the occurrence of oxidative stress and severity of the disease. Treatment with eprinomectin eliminated the infection, and thus minimized oxidative stress in dairy cows.

This study was conducted to estimate the dig. valine to lysine (Val:Lys) ideal ratio for meat-type quails from 15 to 35 d of age. A total of 385, 15-day-old not sexed quails, were randomly assigned to five treatments, each one seven times replicated with eleven quails per experimental unit. Experimental treatments consisted of five dig. Val:Lys ratios (0.65; 0.70; 0.75; 0.80 and 0.85). Ideal dig. Val:Lys ratio was estimated using polynomial regression and linear broken-line regression model. Significant effect was considered when p0.05. Feed conversion ratio was not affected by dig. Val:Lys ratios in any of the assessed phases. From 15 to 21 d of age Val:Lys ratios increased linearly feed intake, weight gain and body weight. From 15 to 28 d of age, weight gain and body weight were both optimized by the Val:Lys ratio of 0.77. A linear effect of dig. Val:Lys ratios was observed on weight gain and final body weight from 15 to 35 d of age. From 15 to 35 d of age, according to linear broken-line regression model, the dig. Val:Lys ideal ratios for optimum final body weight and weight gain were 0.77 and 0.76, respectively. Based on the results the estimated dig. Val:Lys ratio for optimum meat-type quail performance from 15 to 35 d of age is 0.77

As lesões coronarianas já foram relatadas em espécies de peixes anádromos, com características semelhantes às observadas em aterosclerose humana, mas não em peixes cultivados sem interferência de padrões reprodutivos. Objetivou-se descrever lesões coronarianas em beijupirá (Rachycentron canadum) criado em sistema offshore, em 54 exemplares coletados ao longo do cultivo de oito meses. Amostras de tecido cardíaco de alevinos e juvenis foram submetidas à análise histopatológica e à microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET), para visualização de lesões coronarianas, sendo as lâminas histológicas coradas pela técnica de hematoxilina-eosina, ácido periódico de Schiff, alcian blue e reticulina de Gomori. Exames realizados pela fotomicroscopia de luz evidenciaram lesões arteriais caracterizadas por hiperplasia das túnicas íntima e média de artérias coronárias em, respectivamente, 29,63% e 79,63% dos animais, com redução do lúmen arterial. Na MET, foram observadas alterações na estrutura das coronárias com espessamento do endotélio e membrana basal, proliferação de fibroblastos e fibras colágenas, com acúmulo de material lipídico subendotelial, resíduos celulares aderidos à membrana basal e vesículas pinocitóticas com presença de lisossomos isolados. Constatou-se que os peixes da espécie Rachycentron canadum criados em cativeiro desenvolvem lesão arterial do tipo crônica degenerativa inflamatória.

This study aimed to describe coronary lesions in beijupirá (Rachycentron canadum) farmed in an offshore system, in 54 specimens collected along an eight month cultivation period. Samples of heart tissue of fry and juveniles were subjected to histopathological analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for visualization of coronary lesions, the histology slides were stained using hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid Schiffh, alcian blue, and reticulin of Gomori. Examinations performed by light microscopy showed arterial lesions characterized by hyperplasia of the intima and media tunics, respectively in 29.63% and 79.63 % of the animals, with reduced lumen. In TEM changes in the structure of the coronary endothelium and thickening of the basement membrane, proliferation of fibroblasts and collagen fibers, with subendothelial accumulation of lipid material, cellular debris adhering to the basement membrane and presence of pinocytotics vesicles and isolated lysosomes were observed. It has been found that the Rachycentron canadum fish species farmed in captivity develop arterial lesion of the chronic inflammatory degenerative type.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is highly disseminated among swine herds worldwide. HEV is also a threat to public health, since particularly genotypes 3 and 4 may cause acute hepatitis in human beings. No previous studies were done on the occurrence of HEV in environmental samples in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the present study, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was employed to detect the presence of HEV in swine feces and in effluents from slurry lagoons in farms located in the municipality of Teutônia, inside the area of swine husbandry in the state. Pooled fecal samples from the floor of pig barns from 9 wean-to-finish farms and liquid manure samples were collected from the slurry lagoons from 8 of these farms. From the pooled fecal samples, 8/9 were positive for the HEV ORF1 gene by RT-PCR; all the slurry lagoon samples were positive for HEV RNA (100%). The identity of the HEV ORF1 amplicons was confirmed by sequencing belonging to HEV genotype 3, which was previously shown to be circulating in South America.
O vírus da hepatite E (HEV) é altamente disseminado entre rebanhos suínos no mundo todo. O HEV é também uma ameaça à saúde pública, já que os genótipos 3 e 4 podem causar hepatite aguda em seres humanos. Não há estudos anteriores sobre a ocorrência de HEV em amostras ambientais no Rio Grande do Sul. No presente estudo, empregou-se transcrição reversa e reação em cadeia da polimerase (RT-PCR) para detectar a presença de HEV em fezes de suínos e efluentes de lagoas de chorume em fazendas localizadas no município de Teutônia, representativo da região de maior produção de suínos no estado. Pools de amostras fecais foram coletadas a partir do chão de galpões de suínos provenientes de 9 propriedades de terminação; outra amostra de esterco líquido foi coletada das lagoas de chorume de 8 dessas fazendas. A partir das amostras fecais reunidas, 8/9 foram positivas para o gene ORF1 de HEV por PCR convencional; todas as amostras de lagoas de chorume foram positivas para RNA de HEV (100%). A identificação dos produtos de amplificação de HEV ORF1 foi confirmada por sequenciamento pertencente ao HEV genótipo 3, o qual foi previamente detectado na América do Sul.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is highly disseminated among swine herds worldwide. HEV is also a threat to public health, since particularly genotypes 3 and 4 may cause acute hepatitis in human beings. No previous studies were done on the occurrence of HEV in environmental samples in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the present study, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was employed to detect the presence of HEV in swine feces and in effluents from slurry lagoons in farms located in the municipality of Teutônia, inside the area of swine husbandry in the state. Pooled fecal samples from the floor of pig barns from 9 wean-to-finish farms and liquid manure samples were collected from the slurry lagoons from 8 of these farms. From the pooled fecal samples, 8/9 were positive for the HEV ORF1 gene by RT-PCR; all the slurry lagoon samples were positive for HEV RNA (100%). The identity of the HEV ORF1 amplicons was confirmed by sequencing belonging to HEV genotype 3, which was previously shown to be circulating in South America(AU)
O vírus da hepatite E (HEV) é altamente disseminado entre rebanhos suínos no mundo todo. O HEV é também uma ameaça à saúde pública, já que os genótipos 3 e 4 podem causar hepatite aguda em seres humanos. Não há estudos anteriores sobre a ocorrência de HEV em amostras ambientais no Rio Grande do Sul. No presente estudo, empregou-se transcrição reversa e reação em cadeia da polimerase (RT-PCR) para detectar a presença de HEV em fezes de suínos e efluentes de lagoas de chorume em fazendas localizadas no município de Teutônia, representativo da região de maior produção de suínos no estado. Pools de amostras fecais foram coletadas a partir do chão de galpões de suínos provenientes de 9 propriedades de terminação; outra amostra de esterco líquido foi coletada das lagoas de chorume de 8 dessas fazendas. A partir das amostras fecais reunidas, 8/9 foram positivas para o gene ORF1 de HEV por PCR convencional; todas as amostras de lagoas de chorume foram positivas para RNA de HEV (100%). A identificação dos produtos de amplificação de HEV ORF1 foi confirmada por sequenciamento pertencente ao HEV genótipo 3, o qual foi previamente detectado na América do Sul(AU)

Coffea canephora (conilon coffee) represents approximately 30% of the coffee marketed worldwide. The state of Espírito Santo is the largest conilon coffee-producing state in Brazil. In 2013 and 2014, leaves with a leaf spot were observed on most of the conilon coffee seedlings in a commercial nursery in Laranja da Terra, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The infected leaves were deposited in the VIC Herbarium (VIC 42482) and a pure single-spore culture of the pathogen was deposited in the culture collection of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Accession No. COAD 1729). The initial symptoms were circular, brown to dark brown lesions with yellow margins occurring on both leaf surfaces. In high humidity, concentric rings formed and the lesions expanded rapidly to reach up to 30 mm in diameter, and later became dark brown with a grayish center. Black sporodochia with white, and marginal mycelial tuffs bearing black spore masses were observed in the older lesions. These symptoms were consistent with those of Myrothecium leaf spot reported on Coffea spp. (3). Microscopic observation revealed aseptate, hyaline, and cylindrical conidia, rounded at both ends, greenish to black in mass, and 5 to 6 µm long and 1 to 2 µm wide. The symptoms and morphological characteristics described above matched the description of Myrothecium roridum Tode (4). To confirm this identification, DNA was extracted using a Wizard Genomic DNA Purification Kit and the sequence of an internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was obtained and deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KJ815095). The sequence of the ITS region exhibited 100% identity over 561 bp with another M. roridum sequence in GenBank (JF343832). To verify the pathogenicity of the fungus, healthy leaves of the C. canephora clones 12v and 14 (four seedlings each) were wounded superficially with a sterilized needle and inoculated by spraying them with a suspension of M. roridum conidia (106 conidia ml-1). The seedlings were covered with plastic bags and incubated in a growth chamber at 25°C under a photoperiod of 12 h light/12 h dark for 5 days. The control seedlings were sprayed with distilled water and incubated similarly. Fifteen days after inoculation, symptoms in all inoculated seedlings were consistent with those initially observed on the naturally infected seedlings, whereas the controls remained healthy. Re-isolation and identification confirmed Koch's postulates. M. roridum has a wide host range, and symptoms were similar to those reported in other hosts of the pathogen in Brazil (2,3). There is only one report of M. roridum on C. canephora in Colombia (1); however, this pathogen was previously reported on C. arabica in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands (1,3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of a leaf spot caused by M. roridum on conilon coffee in Brazil. The cultivation of conilon coffee is increasing and the reported leaf spot disease affects the quality of the seedlings in nurseries. Yucca filamentosa L. (Agavaceae), commonly known as Adam's needle, is known in Brazil as "agulha-de-adão." It is an ornamental garden plant with medicinal properties (4). In 2010, 100% of Y. filamentosa seedlings and plants were observed with a severe leaf spot disease in two ornamental nurseries located in the municipality of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Initially, lesions were dark brown, elliptical, and scattered, and later became grayish at the center with a reddish brown margin, irregular and coalescent. Infected leaf samples were deposited in the herbarium at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Accession Nos. VIC32054 and VIC32055). A fungus was isolated from the leaf spots and single-spore pure cultures were obtained on potato dextrose agar (PDA). The sporulating single-spore cultures were deposited at the Coleção de Culturas de Fungos Fitopatogênicos "Prof. Maria Menezes" (CMM 1843 and CMM 1844). On the leaf, the fungus produced pycnidial conidiomata that were scattered or gregarious, usually epiphyllous, immersed, dark brown, unilocular, subglobose, and 95 to 158 × 108 to 175 µm, with a minute, subcircular ostiole. Conidiogenous cells were blastic, hyaline, conoidal, or short cylindrical. Conidia were aseptate, hyaline, smooth walled, coarsely granular, broadly ellipsoidal to subglobose or obovate, usually broadly rounded at both ends, occasionally truncate at the base or indented slightly at the apex, and 7.5 to 13.5 × 6 to 10 µm. Conidia were also surrounded by a slime layer, usually with a hyaline, flexuous, narrowly conoidal or cylindrical, mucilaginous apical appendage that was 10 to 16 µm long. Spermatia were hyaline, dumbbell shaped to cylindrical, both ends bluntly rounded, and 3 to 5 × 1 to 1.5 µm. These characteristics matched well with the description of Phyllosticta yuccae Bissett (1). To confirm this identification, DNA was extracted using a Wizard Genomic DNA Purification Kit and amplified using primers ITS1 and ITS4 (2) for the ITS region (GenBank Accession Nos. JX227945 and JX227946) and EF1-F and EF2-R (3) for the TEF-1α (JX227947 and JX227948). The sequencing was performed by Macrogen, South Korea. The ITS sequence matched sequence No. JN692541, P. yuccae, with 100% identity. To confirm Koch's postulates, four leaves of Y. filamentosa (five plants) were inoculated with 6-mm-diameter plugs from a 7-day-old culture growing on PDA. The leaves were covered with plastic sack and plants were maintained at 25°C. In a similar manner, fungus-free PDA plugs were placed on five control plants. Symptoms were consistently similar to those initially observed in the nurseries and all plants developed leaf spots by 15 days after inoculation. P. yuccae was successfully reisolated from the symptomatic tissue and control plants remained symptomless. P. yuccae has been previously reported in Canada, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Iran, and the United States of America. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. yuccae causing disease in Y. filamentosa in Brazil and it may become a serious problem for the nurseries, due to the severity of the disease and the lack of chemical products to control this pathogen. Based on small scale studies or on little sensitive serological tests, bovines in the south of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, are known to be infected with either bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) or 5 (BoHV-5). However, whether the prevalence of each of these viruses is high or low is currently still unknown. In order to determine the extent of BoHV (-1 and/or -5) infections in bovines in this region of Brazil, 200 bovines were studied for the presence of BoHV DNA. To this end, first a quantitative PCR was developed that amplified BoHV-1 DNA as well as BoHV-5 DNA. Using this PCR the number of BoHV genomes normally present in latently infected ganglia of naturally infected bovines was estimated. The new PCR was sensitive enough to detect most BoHV DNA in infected ganglia. The results of this first PCR showed that at least 87% of the bovines in the south of Rio Grande do Sul were (latently) infected with either BoHV-1 or BoHV-5. To determine the prevalence of BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 separately, two type-specific PCRs - one for each virus - were developed that used the products of the first PCR as a template. The results of these type-specific PCRs showed that 82.8% of the BoHV positive population was (latently) infected with BoHV-1, 93.1% with BoHV-5 and 75.9% with both BoHV-1 and BoHV-5. This is the first time that such a high frequency of co-infection of BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 in bovines has been demonstrated.

Different types and subtypes of bovine herpesvirus 1 and 5 (BoHV-1 and BoHV-5) have been associated to different clinical conditions of cattle, in such a way that type/subtype differentiation has become an essential tool for understanding the pathogenesis and epidemiology of BoHV infections. In search for a genomic region that would allow a clear distinction between BoHV-1 and BoHV-5, the carboxy-terminal portion of glycoprotein C (gC), corresponding to residues 321-450 (BoHV-1) and 301-429 (BoHV-5) of 23 South American (SA) isolates (Brazil mostly) was amplified and sequenced. The nucleotide sequence alignments revealed levels of genomic similarity ranging from 98.7 to 99.8% among BoHV-1 isolates, 88.3 to 92% between BoHV-1/BoHV-5 and 96 to 99.7% among BoHV-5 isolates. At the amino acid level, sequence similarity varied ranging from 97.5 to 99.5% among BoHV-1, 77.5 to 84.4% between BoHV-1/BoHV-5 and 92.1 to 99.5% (BoHV-5/BoHV-5). The isolates could be clearly separated into BoHV-1.1, BoHV-1.2 and BoHV-5 after phylogenetic analysis. The results suggest that the phylogenetic analysis performed here can be used as a potential molecular epidemiological tool for herpesviruses.

We evaluated the usefulness of seven cysticercal antigen extracts, four from Taenia solium cysticerci (whole parasite-TsoW, membrane-TsoMe, vesicular fluid-TsoVF and scolex-TsoSc) and three from T. crassiceps cysticerci (whole parasite-TcraW, membrane-TcraMe and vesicular fluid-TcraVF), for serodiagnosis of neurocysticercosis with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cysticercus-specific IgG were screened in serum samples from 23 patients with neurocysticercosis, 32 patients with other infections and 48 healthy persons. The best results were obtained with the TsoVF-ELISA (91.3% sensitivity; 96.2% specificity) and TcraVF-ELISA (91.3% sensitivity; 95% specificity). The ELISA done with whole parasite and membrane extracts from cysts of T. solium and T. crassiceps and the scolex extract from T. solium cysts showed a low performance in terms of sensitivity, ranging from 47.8% to 73.9%. None of the antigen preparations from T. solium and T. crassiceps cysticerci used in this study showed outstanding performance for the serodiagnosis of neurocysticercosis. However, considering the results obtained with the seven antigen preparations, vesicular fluid from T. solium and T. crassiceps cysticerci may be useful for detecting specific antibodies in sera from patients with neurocysticercosis.

In this work, a role for the genes encoding glycoproteins I (gI) and E (gE) and the US9 protein of bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5) in neuropathogenicity and reactivation of latent infections was examined. Calves infected intranasally with a gI/gE/US9 deleted recombinant shed up to 10(2.85) TCID50/ml infectious virus in nasal secretions. Calves infected with the wild type BHV-5 parental virus shed up to 10(5) TCID50/ml virus. No signs of disease were observed in calves infected with the recombinant virus, whereas those infected with wild type virus displayed respiratory and neurological signs. The recombinant was only able to reach the basal portions of the central nervous system. In contrast, wild type virus was found widespread within the brain. Reactivation with dexamethasone 60 days post-infection resulted in reactivation of wild type virus, whereas the recombinant virus could not be reactivated. These studies demonstrate that genes gI, gE and US9 of BHV-5 are important for its neuropathogenicity and its ability to reactive from latency.

El compromiso óseo craneal asociado a tumores cerebrales primarios es de ocurrencia rara. Entre los gliomas de crecimiento lento que pueden cursar con erosión craneána están el astrocitoma, oligodendroglioma, ependimoblastoma, oligoastrocitoma, glioblastoma multiforme, meningiomas, metástasis y sarcomas. Su fisiopatología se debe probablemente a evolución lenta y localización superficial en el cerebro, lo que ocasiona elevación progresiva de la presión intracraneal. Los autores relatan un caso de ependimoma parietal posterior derecho con perforación de la duramadre y extensión extracraneal.
