RESUMEN

Muscular contraction, especially if it is protracted or particularly intense, causes notable changes in the substrate and enzymes involved. Marked changes have been found in the serum levels of myoglobin and CK in individuals subjected to very stressful physical work. This phenomenon has usually been attributed to the repeated and intense muscular traumas inherent in certain sporting activities. In the light of these facts, the authors decided to perform a study on amateur boxers aimed at measuring the difference between simple muscular work (shadow boxing) and traumatic activity (real boxing) in terms of their effect on a number of humoral parameters, especially myoglobin and CK. The serum levels of these two latter substances were found to increase more after real boxing than after shadow boxing.

RESUMEN

Renal clearance of lipase, expressed as a proportion of simultaneous creatinine clearances was evaluated in an experimental model of acute pancreatitis in the rat. The lipase creatinine clearance ratio resulted very low in normal and control animals, while in rats with acute pancreatitis it increased regularly, significantly and proportionally to the degree of pancreatic damage. These observations indicated that, in this experimental model, the increased lipase creatinine clearance ratio is a sensitive index of acute pancreatitis, providing a basis for using the test in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

Serum cystine-animo-peptidase (CAP) is a valid test for placental function. We found it interesting following up the variations of CAP during induced labour and early puerperium; with this aim in view we determined the values of the enzyme in 33 pregnant nullipares. Six blood samples were taken from each woman. (174 determinations in all): 1) before labour; 2) at 5 cm. dilatation of the uterine neck; 3) immediately after the expulsion of fetus; 4) two hours after delivery; 5) first day of puerperium; 6) in the fourth day of puerperium. Statistical analysis -- Wilcoxon's test and rank bivalent variants analysis of Friedman (X2r) -- show that the variations of values in the first four groups are not statistically significant; values from 1th and 4th day of puerperium show a mean reduction in level of CAP which is remarkable and statistically significant.

RESUMEN

The AA. describe a method of gradual occlusion of the portal vein in the rat to induce a hepatic encephalopaty. This method allows to realise a condition of hepatic ischemia and a portal hypertensive state accompanied by spontaneous portal-systemic shunts. These two factors produce a hepatic encephalopaty like in cirrhotic state or in patients after portal systemic anastomosis. A part from similar behavior at the beginning of the encephalopaty it is possible to define two classes of animals: one showing a slow recovery and one showing a transient and slight improvement followed at the end by the death of the animal. The AA. found a definite correlation amoung the clinica, EEG's, serum aminoacids and biochemical data. Probably the different anatomical and phisiological aspects of the induced portal systemic shunts and the different ways of hepatic rivascularization may determine the two different evolutions of the animals.

RESUMEN

The synovial lactoferrin (LF) concentrations of 59 patients with active rheumatoid arthritis were determined. The median value of LF was 4.64+/-3.59 mg/100 ml, but in degenerative arthropathy the levels of the metal-protein were much lower and often not titratable. These variations in the LF concentration explain the low blood-iron levels in inflammatory states, even when the concentration of the metal-protein is not statistically correlated in inflammatory tests, IgG, complement fractions (of the normal or alternate pathway), or variations of other protein fractions of leucocyte origin.

RESUMEN

The normal range of serum cystine-amino-peptidase (C.A.P.) in 54 cases of uncomplicated pregnancies was established. 21 patients whose pregnancies were though to be "at risk" were serially monitored by sonar biparietal cephalometry and serum cystine-amino-peptidase determination. The results show that exists a correlation between C.A.P. and biparietal cephalometry values. Furthermore the "predictive power" towards neonatal conditions (by birth weight and Apgar score determination) was of 77,55% for the biparietal cephalometry and 76,10% for C.A.P.

RESUMEN

Low serum iron level with a transferrin saturation below 16% is a crucial aetiologic factor of anaemia in haemodialysed patients. Current therapy usually is a correct dialytic and dietetic treatment and i.v. iron supply. Two groups of haemodialysis patients with low serum iron but a normal transferrin saturation, have been studied by comparing the efficacy of the i.v. and the oral iron supply. The serum iron of the two groups changed from low to normal level with highly significant difference. Haemoglobin and haematocrit did not change because of the normal transferrin saturation before the treatment. In conclusion, in uraemic patients treated by chronic dialysis, the oral and the i.v. iron therapy probably give the same result.

RESUMEN

The value of sonor biparietal cephalometry and serum oxytocinase that we have obtained with weekly simultaneous determinations in 14 females with normal pregnancy and in 5 with pathological pregnancy, from 24th to 39th week, show a statical positive relation. Serum oxitocinase determination against hormonal tests of the phetoplancental function (urinary oestriol, pregnandiol, serum HCS, ecc.) give advantages: it is the easyer, faster and less espandove determination. Therefore we think that it is helpful to determin togheter serial values of sonar biparietal cephalometry and serum oxytocinase to anticipate the endouterine fetal growth retardation.
