UV radiation causes long- and short-term skin damage, such as erythema and skin cancer. Therefore, the use of sunscreens is extremely important. However, concerns about UV filter safety have prompted exploration into alternative solutions, with nanotechnology emerging as a promising avenue. This systematic review identified 23 experimental studies utilizing nanocarriers to encapsulate sunscreens with the aim of enhancing their efficacy and safety. Polymeric and lipid nanoparticles are frequently employed to encapsulate both organic and inorganic UV filters along with natural antioxidants. Nanocarriers have demonstrated benefits including reduced active ingredient usage, increased sun protection factor, and mitigated photoinstability. Notably, they also decreased the skin absorption of UV filters. In summary, nanocarriers represent a viable strategy for improving sunscreen formulations, offering enhanced physicochemical properties and bolstered photoprotective effects, thereby addressing concerns regarding UV filter safety and efficacy in cosmetic applications.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient global public health problem. Several strategies have been applied to develop new and more effective vaccines against TB, from attenuated or inactivated mycobacteria to recombinant subunit or genetic vaccines, including viral vectors. This review aimed to evaluate patents filed between 2010 and 2023 for TB vaccine candidates. It focuses on viral vector-based strategies. A search was carried out in Espacenet, using the descriptors "mycobacterium and tuberculosis" and the classification A61K39. Of the 411 patents preliminarily identified, the majority were related to subunit vaccines, with 10 patents based on viral vector platforms selected in this study. Most of the identified patents belong to the United States or China, with a concentration of patent filings between 2013 and 2023. Adenoviruses were the most explored viral vectors, and the most common immunodominant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) antigens were present in all the selected patents. The majority of patents were tested in mouse models by intranasal or subcutaneous route of immunization. In the coming years, an increased use of this platform for prophylactic and/or therapeutic approaches for TB and other diseases is expected. Along with this, expanding knowledge about the safety of this technology is essential to advance its use.

Synthetic sunscreen offers protection against excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, and protects the skin from possible damage. However, they have low efficacy against the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are highly reactive molecules that can be generated in the skin when it is exposed to UV radiation, and are known to play a role in oxidative stress, which can contribute to skin aging and damage. Thus, there is an ongoing search for sunscreens that do not have these negative effects. One promising source for these is natural products. Therefore, the current patent review summarizes topical formulations made from natural compounds that have antioxidant properties and can be used as photoprotective or anti-aging agents, either using a single natural extract or a combination of extracts. The review reports basic patent information (applicant country, type of applicant, and year of filing) and gives details about the invention, including its chemical composition, and the in vitro and in vivo tests performed. These patents describe natural products that can be used to protect the skin and validate their efficacy, and safety, in addition to standardizing their formulations. The compositions described illustrate the consistent innovation in the use of natural products to protect against UV damage and photoaging disorders, a promising field which is receiving growing global recognition.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis is a musculoskeletal disease that can lead to the loss and inability of those affected to perform normal daily functions, which leads to a decrease in quality of life. The main symptoms of osteoarthritis are tenderness, joint pain, stiffness, crepitus, limited movement, and local inflammation. AREAS COVERED: The selected patents were deposited from 2010 to April 2022 involving 57 documents that were in line with the study objective in the final selection. The patents were classified in years, country, and applicants. Also, the therapeutic fields that presented the most documents were electrical stimulation, phototherapy, and ultrasound, followed by magnetic, electromagnetic, and thermotherapy. Therefore, the most current therapies used in the documents are already on the market. EXPERT OPINION: Although the OA is cureless, non-surgical treatments are classified as the primary management approach for this disease. The pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies are employed to reduce its prevalence and ensure the effectiveness of treatments. A strategy for relieving OA symptoms is non-pharmacological treatment, which can be based on exercise and patient education, combined with other alternative therapies. These therapies are used as supplements to the main OA treatments, enhancing the effectiveness of treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use for tumor treatment has been explored in several areas, and its potential for tumor remission is currently being studied after the discovery of the endogenous cannabinoid. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to conduct a critical patent review to identify and explore the latest advances and therapeutic strategies using Cannabis to treat cancer. METHODS: The research was carried out in the free and online database Espacenet, using the descriptors "cancer" and "Cannabis or cannabidiol" in the title or abstract. A total of 95 patents were identified for preliminary evaluation in the database. Six duplicate patents were excluded, 12 referring to traditional Chinese medicine and 36 with a title in disagreement with the scope of this review. In addition the final selection involved 21 patents that were in line with the objective of the study. RESULTS: As observed in the reading of patents, the interest of pharmaceutical industries and researchers and the development of new products to fight cancer have increased in recent years. The main cannabinoids present in the patents are tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol, and hemp. Moreover, the patents were classified and the main applicant countries were the United States followed by Japan, with a higher filing rate in 2019 and, mainly by the industry. CONCLUSION: In conclusion we can say that, the importance of parliamentary approval in the cultivation and investments that, in addition to bringing innovation to the industrial sector, enriches research in the area, contributing to the creation of new medicines.

The expected outcome after a scaffold augmented hernia repair is the regeneration of a tissue composition strong enough to sustain biomechanical function over long periods. It is hypothesised that melt electrowriting (MEW) medical-grade polycaprolactone (mPCL) scaffolds loaded with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) will enhance soft tissue regeneration in fascial defects in abdominal and vaginal sheep models. A pre-clinical evaluation of vaginal and abdominal hernia reconstruction using mPCL mesh scaffolds and polypropylene (PP) meshes was undertaken using an ovine model. Each sheep was implanted with both a PP mesh (control group), and a mPCL mesh loaded with PRP (experimental group) in both abdominal and vaginal sites. Mechanical properties of the tissue-mesh complexes were assessed with plunger tests. Tissue responses to the implanted meshes were evaluated via histology, immunohistochemistry and histomorphometry. At 6 months post-surgery, the mPCL mesh was less stiff than the PP mesh, but stiffer than the native tissue, while showing equitable collagen and vascular ingrowth when compared to PP mesh. The results of this pilot study were supportive of mPCL as a safe and effective biodegradable scaffold for hernia and vaginal prolapse repair, hence a full-scale long-term study (over 24-36 months) with an adequate sample size is recommended.

Aim: The study aimed to review experimental models using cyclodextrins to improve antibacterial drugs' physicochemical characteristics and biological activities. Methods: The following terms and their combinations were used: cyclodextrins and antibacterial agents in title or abstract, and the total study search was conducted over a period up to October 2022. The review was carried out using PubMed, Scopus and Embase databases. A total of 1580 studies were identified, of which 27 articles were selected for discussion in this review. Results: The biological results revealed that the antibacterial effect of the inclusion complexes was extensively improved. Cyclodextrins can enhance the therapeutic effects of antibiotics already existing on the market, natural products and synthetic molecules. Conclusion: Overall, CDs as drug-delivery vehicles have been shown to improve antibiotics solubility, stability, and bioavailability, leading to enhanced antibacterial activity.
The overuse of drugs can cause bacteria to become less susceptible to them. This is known as resistance. One idea on how to tackle this resistance is by using cyclodextrins (CDs). CDs can change how drugs work, making them better at fighting bacteria. As CDs are already used in making drugs, they are a good choice for the basis of creating new drugs.

Osteoarthritis is considered a degenerative joint disease that is characterised by inflammation, chronic pain, and functional limitation. The increasing development of nanotechnology in drug delivery systems has provided new ideas and methods for osteoarthritis therapy. This review aimed to evaluate patents that have developed innovations, therapeutic strategies, and alternatives using nanotechnology in osteoarthritis treatment. The results show patents deposited from 2015 to November 2021 in the online databases European Patent Office and World Intellectual Property Organisation. A total of 651 patents were identified for preliminary assessment and 16 were selected for full reading and discussion. The evaluated patents are focused on the intraarticular route, oral route, and topical route for osteoarthritis treatment. The intraarticular route presented a higher patent number, followed by the oral and topical routes, respectively. The development of new technologies allows us to envision a promising and positive future in osteoarthritis treatment.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a highly prevalent disease that mainly affects the pilosebaceous units associated with sebaceous glands, causing inflammatory skin lesions and affecting the self-esteem, mental health, and quality of life of those who suffer from this disease. Different treatments exist today to prevent, reduce, and improve symptoms; however, over the years, there have been problems with bacterial resistance and slight effectiveness with prolonged use. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is based on the review of patents of new products of principal topical administration for the treatment of acne in recent years 2016-2020, to evaluate and analyze novel synthetic molecules and semi-synthetics with potential therapeutic and preventive in the acne treatment. METHODS: A systematic review of patents was conducted through the official database of the European Patent Office - Espacenet, where the search focused on the keywords: "acne and bacteria" in the title or abstract. Only patents granted between the years 2016-2020 were included, with products having molecules with a synthetic and semi-synthetic origin, without considering natural, biological products or those used as diagnostic means. RESULTS: A total of 19 patents were selected, most with principally antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action, where the reduction in the appearance of resistance by C. acnes is verified, and its action is complemented by inhibiting the different pathophysiological mechanisms that lead to the worsening of the disease. CONCLUSION: Novel approaches in the treatment and prevention of acne, mainly topically, are focused on the reduction of bacterial resistance and irritation compared to current treatments. The use of combined formulations provides better results with additional benefits, improving treatment times and patient adherence.

Pain is one of the most prevalent and difficult to manage symptoms in cancer patients, and conventional drugs present a range of adverse reactions. The development of ß-cyclodextrins (ß-CD) complexes has been used to avoid physicochemical and pharmacological limitations due to the lipophilicity of compounds such as p-Cymene (PC), a monoterpene with antinociceptive effects. Our aim was to obtain, characterize, and measure the effect of the complex of p-cymene and ß-cyclodextrin (PC/ß-CD) in a cancer pain model. Initially, molecular docking was performed to predict the viability of complex formation. Afterward, PC/ß-CD was obtained by slurry complexation, characterized by HPLC and NMR. Finally, PC/ß-CD was tested in a Sarcoma 180 (S180)-induced pain model. Molecular docking indicated that the occurrence of interaction between PC and ß-CD is favorable. PC/ß-CD showed complexation efficiency of 82.61%, and NMR demonstrated PC complexation in the ß-CD cavity. In the S180 cancer pain model, PC/ß-CD significantly reduced the mechanical hyperalgesia, spontaneous nociception, and nociception induced by non-noxious palpation at the doses tested (p < 0.05) when compared to vehicle differently from free PC (p > 0.05). Therefore, the complexation of PC in ß-CD was shown to improve the pharmacological effect of the drug as well as reducing the required dose.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria mutate and escape the effect of antibiotics, which makes the antibiotics no longer effective in treating infections. New solutions for bacterial infections are a persistent need including the identification of drugs with better pharmacological profiles, more potent, and safer. Cyclodextrins inclusion complexes have been able to improve the physicochemical and pharmacological properties of the formulation molecules, resulting in new alternatives with better efficacy. AREAS COVERED: The patents analyzed in the review used treatments based on antibiotics already on the market, natural products, and synthesized molecules composed of the formulation with cyclodextrins. The combination between cyclodextrin and nanostructures also were presented in the patents review process. Moreover, inclusion complexes have been an alternative in developing treatment mainly in China by the pharmaceutical industries in several countries such as Germany, Hungary, the United States of America, Japan and China. EXPERT OPINION: This review is broad and complete since it considers the first patent involving cyclodextrins and antibacterial drugs. Therefore, the various inclusion complexes and antibacterial drugs alternatives presented in this review offer therapeutic options to fight bacterial infections. If shown to be effective, these drugs may be extremely important in the current clinical practice.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the most prevalent and difficult-to-treat symptoms in cancer patients. For this reason, the explore for unused helpful choices able of filling these impediments is essential. Natural products from plants stand out as a valuable source of therapeutic agents, being options for the treatment of this growing public health problem. Therefore, the objective of this study was to report the effects of natural products from plants and the mechanisms of action involved in the reduction of neuropathy caused by chemotherapy. The search was performed in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science in March/2021. Two reviewers independently selected the articles and extracted data on characteristics, methods, study results and methodological quality (SYRCLE). Twenty-two studies were selected, describing the potential effect of 22 different phytochemicals in the treatment of CIPN, with emphasis on terpenes, flavonoids and alkaloids. The effect of these compounds was demonstrated in different experimental protocols, with several action targets being proposed, such as modulation of inflammatory mediators and reduction of oxidative stress. The studies demonstrated a predominance of the risk of uncertain bias for randomization, baseline characteristics and concealment of the experimental groups. Our findings suggest a potential antinociceptive effect of natural products from plants on CIPN, probably acting in several places of action, being strategic for the development of new therapeutic options for this multifactorial condition.

Candida auris is responsible for hospital outbreaks worldwide. Some C. auris isolates may show concomitant resistance to azoles, echinocandins, and polyenes, thereby possibly leaving clinicians with few therapeutic options. In addition, this multi-drug-resistant yeast is difficult to identify with conventional methods and has the ability to persist on environmental surfaces causing hospital-acquired infections. The development of new treatment options and tools for identification is critical to control, prevent, and establish an early diagnosis of this emerging pathogen. The aim of this study was to perform a critical patent review to explore and identify the latest advances in therapeutic strategies as well as diagnostic methods for C. auris. A total of 19 patents were identified for a preliminary assessment from the Espacenet database. Three patents were excluded as they were out of focus for this review according to their abstract and/or description. The final selection covered 16 patents, which were surveyed by country, year and classified as treatment or diagnostic methods for C. auris. As noted in the patent reading, in recent years, the interest of academic, government and industry sectors have shown an increasing tendency focused on research and development of new therapeutic molecules and diagnostic methods to combat this emerging pathogen.

Drugs used to fight fungal infections may cause toxic or adverse drug interactions. For this reason, there is an increase in the development of natural, semisynthetic and synthetic antifungal peptides. This study aimed to perform a patent review to identify the advances in peptides to treat fungal infections. In a preliminary assessment, 597 patents were identified from the database. Then, duplicated patents (62) and those with titles in disagreement with the scope of this review (196) were excluded. Then, six patents were not in English or Spanish. Following the screening, 288 patents were outside the focus of this review, according to their abstract and description. The final selection covered 45 patents.
Currently, medications used to treat fungal infections may interact negatively with other drugs or be hazardous to the host. Scientists have been looking for novel, safe and efficient antifungal drugs since the enhancement of fungal resistance. Antimicrobial peptides, as opposed to traditional antibiotics, offer a variety of antibacterial activity against bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses and cancer cells. The production of isolated natural, semisynthetic and synthetic antifungal peptides has increased. As a result, patents are a reliable and up-to-date source of innovation. As a result, their content analysis provides crucial information for identifying trends in new medications and targeted treatment plans.

Fibromyalgia is a debilitating and chronic pain processing disorder, in which the proportion of patients who achieve good results with pharmacotherapy is small. However, choosing the best available evidence on pharmacotherapy can optimize patient clinical outcomes. Objective: This overview aimed to identify in systematic reviews the effects of pharmacotherapy on fibromyalgia, considering the quality of the reviews and the efficacy of the outcomes. Methods: This search was performed in seven databases: PubMed, Web of Science, COCHRANE, Lilacs, Embase, Scopus and IPA. The methodological quality was evaluated using A MeaSurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2. The protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42018095943). Results: A total of 63 systematic reviews were selected after reading full texts, but only 8 of them were of moderate to high quality and were included in this overview. All included reviews were published in English, between 2012 and 2018, performed meta-analysis, used the American College of Rheumatology (1990) diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia, and jointly assessed pain improvement, adverse reactions, and withdrawal. Most reviews included only randomized controlled trials. Of the fourteen drugs addressed in systematic reviews evaluated, duloxetine, milnacipran, and pregabalin showed evidence of improvement in pain (Moderate: ≤30%) and other fibromyalgia symptoms, as depression and fatigue. However, these medications presented significant withdrawals due to adverse reactions (mainly nausea, headache, dizziness and constipation). The rate of treatment withdrawal reached 36%. Conclusion: Few studies have high quality and sufficient evidence on the effect of medicines on fibromyalgia, resulting in a lack of support for prescribers to choose drugs that meet criteria for need, effectiveness, safety and compliance.
Fibromialgia é um distúrbio de processamento da dor debilitante e crônico, em que a proporção de pacientes que obtêm bons resultados com a farmacoterapia é pequena. No entanto, escolher a melhor evidência disponível sobre a farmacoterapia pode otimizar os resultados clínicos do paciente. Objetivo: Esta overview teve como objetivo identificar em revisões sistemáticas os efeitos da farmacoterapia na fibromialgia, considerando a qualidade das revisões e a eficácia dos resultados. Métodos: Esta busca foi realizada em sete bases de dados: PubMed, Web of Science, COCHRANE, Lilacs, Embase, Scopus e IPA. A qualidade metodológica foi avaliada usando A MeaSurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2. O protocolo foi registrado no PROSPERO (CRD42018095943). Resultados: Um total de 63 revisões sistemáticas foram selecionadas após a leitura de textos completos, mas apenas 8 delas eram de qualidade moderada a alta e foram incluídas nesta overview. Todas as revisões incluídas foram publicadas em inglês, entre 2012 e 2018, realizaram meta-análises, utilizaram os critérios de diagnósticos do American College of Rheumatology (1990) para fibromialgia e avaliaram conjuntamente a melhora da dor, reações adversas e retiradas. A maioria das revisões incluiu apenas ensaios clínicos randomizados. Dos quatorze medicamentos abordados nas revisões sistemáticas avaliadas, duloxetina, milnaciprano e pregabalina mostraram evidências de melhora da dor (moderada: ≤30%) e de outros sintomas da fibromialgia como depressão e fadiga. No entanto, esses medicamentos apresentaram retiradas significativas devido a reações adversas (principalmente náusea, cefaleia, tontura e constipação). A taxa de abandono ao tratamento chegou a 36%. Conclusão: Poucos estudos apresentam evidências suficientes e de alta qualidade sobre o efeito dos medicamentos na fibromialgia, resultando na falta de apoio para os prescritores escolherem medicamentos que atendam aos critérios de necessidade, eficácia, segurança e adesão.

UV radiation can cause damages, such as erythema, skin photoaging, and carcinogenesis. The adoption of protective measures against sun exposure is essential to prevent these damages, and the interest in using natural substances as an alternative for photoprotection is growing. Thus, hesperetin with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties is a promising substance to be used with photochemopreventive action and to protect the skin from damage induced by UV radiation. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop a topical formulation based on AAMVPC gel containing hesperetin and evaluate its photoprotective effect on the skin of rats exposed to UVA-UVB radiation. The animals were submitted to the irradiation protocol UVA-UVB, and at the end, erythema, lipid peroxidation, and activity of the antioxidant enzyme catalase and superoxide dismutase were evaluated. Additionally, it evaluated the activity of myeloperoxidase and histological changes. The formulation presented a rheological and spreadability profile suitable for cutaneous application. In vivo results demonstrated that the topical formulation of AAMVPC gel containing hesperetin at a concentration of 10% protected the skin from damage induced by UVA-UVB radiation, with the absence of erythema, lipid lipoperoxidation, and inflammation (low myeloperoxidase activity), and increased catalase and superoxide dismutase activities. The morphology and architecture of the dermo-epidermal tissue of these animals were like those observed under normal conditions (non-irradiated animals). Thus, the results showed that hesperetin was able to protect the animals' skin against UV radiation-induced skin damage and the protection mechanisms may be related to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of this natural product.

BACKGROUND: The increase in bacterial resistance against antibiotics is thought to be another type of pandemic after COVID-19. Emergency treatment based on antibiotics is a major influence in increasing this resistance. Bacteria, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, are the most affected by the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, since they are resistant to most antibiotics currently available on the market. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to evaluate patents of new drugs and formulations, for the treatment of infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. METHODS: The present patent review was carried out through a specialized search database Espacenet. The selection was based on the criteria of patents published from 2010 to May 2021, in any language, and containing the keywords in title or abstract. Also, a research was performed on the PubMed database, using the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Twenty-two patents were selected for the analysis according to the aim of the study. The advance of new patents has been mostly observed in the World Intellectual Property Organization, China, and United States. The results showed that the main approach was the drug association, followed by drug carriers, new isolated products, and vaccines. CONCLUSION: It has been observed that few studies use new drug alternatives for the treatment, probably due to the higher cost of the development and lack of investments. The effectiveness and safety of these therapies depend on the acceptance, the correct prescription, and rational use of medicines. Therefore, this review can further develop new treatments as alternatives against Klebsiella pneumoniae and pneumonia caused by it.

Self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) are lipid-based isotropic mixtures that enhance the bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs and reduce the possible side effects, offering a wide variety of treatments for several pathologies. The aim of this review is to discuss the state of the art of patents for this drug delivery system by studying recent patent applications (2011 to 2020). We performed a thorough screening using the European Patent Office's Espacenet database, from which 37 inventions were selected and fully studied. China had more patent applications, and the articles published about SEDDS exceeds both in number and technological advance the submitted inventions. Nevertheless, the patents presented herein are innovative to address known issues to traditional SEDDS, including storage and formulation stability, solid formulations, acute gastrointestinal toxicity from surfactants, and drug delivery through alternative routes of administration. This study also revealed that release behavior for SEDDS and associated pharmacokinetics were not completely disclosed by the inventors of the patents and that further studies are required.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic syndrome that can be considered a growing health problem in the world. High blood glucose levels are one of the most notable clinical signs. Currently, new therapeutic alternatives have been tackled from clinicians' and scientists' points of view. Natural products are considered a promising source, due to the huge diversity of metabolites with pharmaceutical applications. Therefore, this review aimed to uncover the latest advances in this field as a potential alternative to the current therapeutic strategies for the treatment of DM. This purpose is achieved after a patent review, using the Espacenet database of the European Patent Office (EPO) (2016-2022). Final screening allowed us to investigate 19 patents, their components, and several technology strategies in DM. Plants, seaweeds, fungi, and minerals were used as raw materials in the patents. Additionally, metabolites such as tannins, organic acids, polyphenols, terpenes, and flavonoids were found to be related to the potential activity in DM. Moreover, the cellular transportation of active ingredients and solid forms with special drug delivery profiles is also considered a pharmaceutical technology strategy that can improve their safety and efficacy. From this perspective, natural products can be a promissory source to obtain new drugs for DM therapy.
