RESUMEN

This study aimed to explore the psychosocial challenges and support needs of young people after suicide attempt. In the research, the phenomenological approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were held with 16 young people shortly after suicide attempt. Data were analysed via content analysis. The data were categorized into five themes: effort to return to the old normal, living with remains, need for support, barriers to seeking help, and awareness. Understanding the psychological challenges and support needs of young people who have attempted suicide will facilitate future research and practice. To support young people in the acute period following the intervention, supportive interventions at the individual, social and political levels need to be established. These findings shed light into the structuring of supportive interventions to be applied to young people following a suicide attempt.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the unmet supportive care needs of breast cancer survivors who experience psychological distress. DATA SOURCES: A qualitative study design with inductive content analysis was used. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 18 Turkish breast cancer survivors who experienced psychological distress. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist was used to report the study. CONCLUSION: Three key themes emerged from data analysis: sources of psychological distress, unmet supportive care needs, and barriers to support. The survivors who experienced psychological distress defined a variety of unmet supportive care needs, in the areas of information support, psychological/emotional support, social support, and individualized health care support. They also described personal and health professional-related factors as barriers. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Nurses should assess psychosocial well-being and supportive care needs of breast cancer survivors. Survivors should be supported to discuss their experiences of symptoms in the early survival phase, and they should be referred to an appropriate supportive care resource. A multidisciplinary survivorship services model is needed to offer posttreatment psychological support routinely in Turkey. Early, effective psychological care integrated into follow-up services for survivors can be protective against psychological morbidity.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The role of cognitive emotion regulation on depressive symptoms in mothers of children given a diagnosis of cancer is not yet well understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cognitive emotion regulation strategies on depressive symptoms in mothers of children with cancer. METHODS: This study was conducted with a cross-sectional correlational design. The study included 129 participants. Participants completed the sociodemographic characteristics form, Beck Depression Inventory, and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of cognitive emotion regulation strategies on depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Hierarchical multiple regression revealed that depressive symptoms were independently associated with self-blame (ß = 0.279, P = .001) and catastrophizing (ß = 0.244, P = .003) after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics of mothers. Emotion regulation strategies explained approximately 39.9% of the variance in depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: The results of the study indicate that more frequent engagement of self-blame and catastrophizing were associated with more depressive symptoms. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Nurses should screen mothers of children with cancer for depressive symptoms and identify mothers of children with cancer who use maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, such as self-blame and catastrophizing, as a risk group. Furthermore, nurses need to be involved in developing psychosocial interventions including adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies to help mothers coping with adverse emotions during a childhood cancer journey.

RESUMEN

Emergency nurses are one of the groups at risk most during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the authors of this qualitative study was to reveal the psychosocial difficulties and needs of nurses working in the emergency department of a university hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. This descriptive phenomenological study was conducted in the emergency department of a university hospital in the West of Turkey. In-depth interviews were conducted with 14 emergency nurses. Colaizzi's descriptive analysis method was used. Findings regarding the psychological difficulties and needs of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic were collected under the following 4 themes: being a nurse in the emergency department in the pandemic, emotional chaos, living with losses, and the support needs. Not only did the emergency nurses state that working as a nurse in the pandemic was challenging and exhausting but they also emphasized the vital importance of nursing care in the pandemic. During the pandemic, the nurses went through different emotional processes according to the stages of the pandemic. Although they needed psychological support, they were expected to meet organizational requirements.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Returning to work (RTW) after breast cancer is an important step in psychosocial recovery. OBJECTIVE: To explore experiences of Turkish breast cancer survivors about returning or continuing to work. METHODS: This study utilized a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through semistructured interviews conducted with 12 breast cancer survivors with full employment. The data were analyzed using inductive content analysis method. RESULTS: Four themes emerged as a result of analysis of obtained data: decision-making process, difficulties in work life, sources of motivation for maintenance of work life, and benefits of RTW. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study showed that RTW involves many uncertainties, and women experience difficulties resulting from themselves, work life, and colleagues. Support from family, colleagues, and employers is an important source of motivation in women's coping with these difficulties. In addition, RTW positively influences psychosocial well-being. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Health professionals should provide support as part of follow-up care regarding difficulties in the return to and continuation of work experienced by breast cancer survivors. Future studies could focus on experiences of all stakeholders including physicians, nurses, colleagues, and employers.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: It is important to manage psychological distress and improve the quality of life (QOL) in patients after breast cancer treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a home-based, psychoeducational program on distress, anxiety, depression, and QOL in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: The study was a single-group pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design. The data were collected using the Distress Thermometer, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Turkish version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument, short form. The home-based, individual, face-to-face psychoeducational program was structured according to breast cancer survivors' needs and the Neuman Systems Model. RESULTS: A total of 32 Turkish breast cancer survivors participated in this study. There were statistically significant differences in the mean scores for distress, anxiety, and depression in the breast cancer survivors over 4 measurements. The mean scores for all subscales of the QOL at 6 months postintervention were significantly higher than the mean scores at baseline. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated that the psychoeducational program may be effective in reducing distress, anxiety, and depression and in improving the QOL in breast cancer survivors. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Psychoeducational programs may be effective and should be considered as part of the survivorship care for breast cancer survivors.
