RESUMEN

The construction and launch of the cyclotron & PET centre at the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute, which is run in cooperation with the Nuclear Research Institute Praha-Rez, allows the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute to engage in the research, development and application of new radiopharmaceuticals including compounds labelled by short-living positron emitters (especially 11C). For the immediate future, new projects are planned, e.g. using the proliferation marker 18F-fluoro-L-thymidine, or neuro-oncological studies using the proteosynthesis and amino acid transport marker 11C-methionine, and eventually also other compounds applicable outside of oncology. The existence of the PET centre at the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute therefore offers a wide range of possibilities to both patients and physicians in the Brno region and beyond.

RESUMEN

We studied whether five sessions of 10 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS treatment) applied over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) or the primary motor cortex (MC) in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) patients would have any effect on L-dopa-induced dyskinesias and cortical excitability. We aimed at a randomised, controlled study. Single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation, and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS parts III and IV) were performed prior to, immediately after, and one week after an appropriate rTMS treatment. Stimulation of the left DLPFC induced a significant motor cortex depression and a trend towards the improvement of L-dopa-induced dyskinesias.

RESUMEN

The anti-inflammatory activity of selected mononuclear Aqua(aryloxyacetato)copper(II) complexes with the composition [Cu(R-O-CH2COO)2(H2O)n].mH2O (R = phenyl, n = 3; m = 0), 4-chlorophenyl (2; 0), 4-chloro-2-methylphenyl (2; 0) and naphthyl (2; 2) was examined using rat paw dextrano edema. The antiphlogistic effects of the tested complexes were compared to those for corresponding aryloxyacetic acids and salicylic acid and its Cu(II) salt. The compounds were administered i.p. in a single effective dose of 10 mg/kg. The complexes with R = phenyl, 4-chlorophenyl and 4-chloro-2-methylphenyl exhibited a biological activity comparable to that of copper(II) salicylate tetrahydrate.

RESUMEN

The antimicrobial activities of a group of copper(II) chelates with the composition [Cu(TSB)(L)] or [Cu(TSB)(L')]. (TSB = N-salicylidene-L-alpha-alaninate dianion, L = imidazole and its alkyl derivatives, L' = pyrazole and 3,5-dimethylpyrazole) were studied. Bis-diazole complexes with L' = pyrazole and 3,5-dimethylpyrazole were found to be the most active against S. aureus (MIC = 78 and 20 micrograms.cm-3), less effective against C. albicans (156 micrograms.cm-3), T. terrestre and M. gypseum (100 micrograms.cm-3). The observed biological properties of complexes are discussed in relation to their proposed structures.
