RESUMEN

Guided elastic wave (GEW) transducers for structural health monitoring (SHM) can act as transmitters (senders) and receivers (sensors). Their performance in both cases depends on the structure to which they are coupled. Therefore, they must be characterized as system transducer- structure. The characterization of the transducer-structure as transmitter using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV) is straightforward, whereas its characterization as receiver is non-trivial. We propose to exploit electromechanical reciprocity, which is an identity between the transfer functions of electrical-to-mechanical and mechanical-to-electrical conversions. For this purpose, the well-known electromechanical reciprocity theorem was adapted to the following situation: The two reciprocal states are "electrical excitation and detection of the surface velocity at point P" and "mechanical excitation at P and measurement of the electrical quantities". According to the derived formulas, the quantities on the mechanical and electrical sides must be chosen appropriately to ensure reciprocity as well as that the corresponding transfer functions are equal. We demonstrate the reciprocity with experimental data for correctly chosen transfer functions and show the deviation in reciprocity for a different choice. Furthermore, we propose further applications of electromechanical reciprocity.

In many industrial sectors, structural health monitoring (SHM) is considered as an addition to nondestructive testing (NDT) that can reduce maintenance effort during the lifetime of a technical facility, structural component, or vehicle. A large number of SHM methods are based on ultrasonic waves, whose properties change depending on structural health. However, the wide application of SHM systems is limited due to the lack of suitable methods to assess their reliability. The evaluation of the system performance usually refers to the determination of the probability of detection (POD) of a test procedure. Up until now, only a few limited methods exist to evaluate the POD of SHM systems, which prevents them from being standardized and widely accepted in the industry. The biggest hurdle concerning the POD calculation is the large number of samples needed. A POD analysis requires data from numerous identical structures with integrated SHM systems. Each structure is then damaged at different locations and with various degrees of severity. All of these are connected to high costs. Therefore, one possible way to tackle this problem is to perform computer-aided investigations. In this work, the POD assessment procedure established in NDT according to the Berens model is adapted to guided wave-based SHM systems. The approach implemented here is based on solely computer-aided investigations. After efficient modeling of wave propagation phenomena across an automotive component made of a carbon-fiber-reinforced composite, the POD curves are extracted. Finally, the novel concept of a POD map is introduced to look into the effect of damage position on system reliability.

The operation efficiency and safety of pressure vessels in the oil and gas industry profits from an accurate knowledge about the inner filling distribution. However, an accurate and reliable estimation of the multi-phase height levels in such objects is a challenging task, especially when considering the high demands in practicability, robustness in harsh environments and safety regulations. Most common systems rely on impractical instrumentation, lack the ability to measure solid phases or require additional safety precautions due to their working principle. In this work, another possibility to determine height levels by attenuation tomography with guided elastic waves is proposed. The method uses a complete instrumentation on the outer vessel shell and is based on the energy conversion rates along the travel path of the guided waves. Noisy data and multiple measurements from sparsely distributed sensor networks are translated into filling levels with accuracies in the centimeter range by solving a constrained optimization problem. It was possible to simultaneously determine sand, water, and oil phases on a mock-up scale experiment, even for artificially created sand slopes. The accuracy was validated by artificial benchmarking for a horizontal vessel, giving references for constructing an affordable prototype system.
