RESUMEN

A novel high-speed Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) fully integrated into a 90 nm CMOS process is presented. The MZM features 'double-pass' optical phase shifter segments, and the first use of integrated inductors in a 'velocity-matched' distributed-electrode configuration.

RESUMEN

Pharmacological management of pain for acute and chronic conditions has been guided by a scientific understanding of peripheral and central acting mechanisms for the control of inflammation as well as pain. Oral surgery pain is a reliable model to reference the effectiveness of commonly used analgesics such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. A total of 706 patients who were experiencing moderate to severe pain received a single dose of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or placebo. After 6 hours, the degree of pain relief and tolerance was assessed. Ibuprofen has important implications for postoperative pain in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

Tumor calcinosis is a rare disease of unknown cause, manifesting itself as abnormal calcifications of cystic masses in the fibrous tissues adjacent to, but not involving, the joint spaces. A family with multiple siblings affected by tumoral calcinosis and found to have unusual dental radiographic findings consistent with varying degrees of expression of dentinal dysplasia is described.

RESUMEN

Presented is a salivary tumor occurring in the posterior mandible. This tumor was preceded by a mixed tumor of the ipsilateral parotid gland, which was removed surgically 17 years earlier. The actual connection between the two lesions is discussed, but the true relationship can only be speculative. The mandibular lesion may represent a recurrence of the parotid tumor, a second primary tumor, or may possibly be metastatic in origin.

RESUMEN

This report describes a case of osteomyelitis that did not respond to routine hyperbaric oxygen, surgical debridement, and intravenous antibiotics. The multiple sites of the osteomyelitis, the presence of skin lesions, and the unusual organism (Corynebacterium group JK, L form) that was isolated indicated that the patient might have an immunodeficiency, but none could be identified.

RESUMEN

Many procedures for increasing the denture-bearing area of the atrophic mandible have been advocated. This article presents an alternative method of treatment. The ramus frame implant is a metallic tripodal device designed to provide a denture-bearing surface when inserted into the mandible. The procedure for placement of the frame requires minimal time and instrumentation, and it may be performed on an outpatient basis. Fifty-six implants have been placed since 1974, and 51 (91%) are still in place and functional.

RESUMEN

Central osseous tumors, which are radiographically multilocular and have multinucleated giant cells microscopically, present the surgeon and the pathologist with a diagnostic dilemma. In the case presented here the histologic diagnosis of central giant cell granuloma conflicts with the presentation of an atypical case of cherubism. Central giant cell granuloma and cherubism are discussed briefly, and the necessity of basing the final diagnosis on clinical presentation is demonstrated.

RESUMEN

Cold agglutinin disease is an autoimmune hemolytic anemia with varying causes. Two major types are recognized, with different clinical manifestations. Cold agglutinins are circulating antibodies capable of erythrocyte agglutination. However, the reaction is readily reversible. Treatment of the disease is variable. A case is presented to illustrate that minor oral surgical procedures are feasible, provided the proper precautions are taken.

RESUMEN

A case of micrognathia and partial adactylia is presented. Several syndromes that can be classified under the term oral-mandibular-limb dysgenesis are discussed, as well as a report of a patient with malformations corresponding closely to the malformations seen in our patient. Genetic and environmental causes of micrognathia are discussed in conjunction with the various theories of the mechanism of congential oral deformities. Finally, a surgical approach to the correction of micrognathia is presented with postoperative results.

RESUMEN

The problems encountered in the anesthetic and oral surgical management of patients with epidermolysis bullosa are many and varied and are always challenging. Two patients with the disease, from the same family, underwent complete odontectomies. Exacerbation of the disease was prevented by hospitalization with meticulous preparation and exacting postoperative care. This is the first report in the dental literature of complete odontectomies performed on two afficted patients from one family.
