RESUMEN

The study investigated the influence of a National Highway (NH) traversing tea estates (TEs) on heavy metal (HM) contamination in the top soils of Upper Assam, India. The dispersion and accumulation of six HMs, viz. cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn), within tea-growing soils were assessed using diverse indices: contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (DC), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), modified degree of contamination (MDC), Nemerow pollution index (PINemerow), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk factor (Eri), and potential ecological risk index (RI). The order of HM prevalence was Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cd. Elevated Cd levels near the NH prompted immediate attention, while Cd and Zn showed moderate pollution in CF, EF, and RI. The remaining metals posed minimal individual risk (Eri< 40), resulting in an overall contamination range of "nil to shallow," signifying slight contamination from the studied metals. From MDC values for investigated metals, it was found to be "zero to very low degree of contamination" at all locations except the vicinity of NH. Soil pollution, as determined by PLI, indicated unpolluted soils in both districts, yet PINemerow values indicated slight pollution. The statistical analysis revealed that there is a significant decrease in most of the indices of HM as the distance from NH increases. The application of multivariate statistical techniques namely Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis showed the presence of three distinct homogenous groups of distances based on different indices. This investigation underscores NH-associated anthropogenic effects on TE soil quality due to HM deposition, warranting proactive mitigation measures.

The present study aimed to analyze and establish an effective combination of ultrasound and immersion pretreatment processes for drying Taikor (Garcinia pendunculata Roxb.) fruits. Taikorslices were first immersed in 10 % sucrose, fructose, and glucose solution. Then, the immersed slices were treated in an ultrasonic bath at 30 °C for 10, 20, and 30 min. Drying operations were carried out at 50, 60, and 70 °C, with a fixed relative humidity of 30 %. The Page, Newton, Henderson and Pabis, and Weibull distribution models were fitted to the obtained drying data to determine the best kinetic model that effectively describes the drying properties ofTaikor. After drying operations, changes in quality parameters, e.g., ß-carotene, vitamin C, B vitamins, color, antioxidant activities, and microbial loads, were measured to obtain the best drying temperature and the most effective pretreatment combination with minimum loss of nutrients of the sample. Among different kinetic models, both Page and Weibull distribution models showed the best R2 values of 0.9867 and 0.9366, respectively. The chemical properties were preserved to the greatest extent possible by drying at 50 °C with glucose pretreatment. The color parameters were better preserved by fructose pretreatment. Sonication time also had profound effect on the quality parameters of dried Taikor slices. However, higher temperature drying required a shorter time for drying and exhibited better performance in microbial load reduction. This study's findings will help to establish an effective drying condition forGarcinia pedunculatafruits.

The demand for sustainable and eco-friendly extraction methods for bioactive compounds from natural sources has increased significantly in recent years. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of the microwave pretreated ultrasound-assisted extraction (MPUAE) process for the extraction of antioxidants (TPC, DPPH, and FRAP) from papaya pulp and peel. The optimized variables for the MPUAE process were determined using the Box-Behnken design tool of response surface methodology. Our results showed that the optimized variables for pulp and peel were 675.76 and 669.70 W microwave power, 150 s of irradiation time, 30 °C ultrasound temperature, and 19.70 and 16.46 min of ultrasonic extraction time, respectively. Moreover, the MPUAE process was found to be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly compared to the conventional ultrasound-associated extraction (UAE) technique. The MPUAE process emitted less CO2 to the environment and had a shorter extraction time, resulting in a more sustainable and cost-effective extraction process. Our study suggests that the MPUAE process has the potential to be a promising and eco-friendly alternative for the industrial extraction of bioactive compounds from papaya and other natural sources.

The effects of human activities are becoming clearer every year, with multiple reports of struggling and eroded ecosystems resulting in new threats of plant and animal extinctions throughout the world. It has been speculated that roadside tea-growing soils impact on metal dynamics from soil to tea plants and subsequently to tea infusion which may be threatened by increasingly unpredictable and dangerous surroundings. Furthermore, heavy metals released from vehicles on the national highway (NH) could be a source of metal contamination in roadside tea soils and tea plants. This study was articulated to realize the effect of NH on a buildup of selected metals (Cu, Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn) in made tea along with repeated tea infusion. In general, metal concentration was found significantly higher in made tea prepared from the young shoots collected from the vicinity of NH. The results also showed that distance from the NH and infusion process significantly influenced to content of the analysed metal in tea infusions. The mean average daily intake (ADI) and hazard quotient (HQ) values of analysed tea samples were found in the orderMn˃Fe˃Zn˃Cu˃Ni˃Cd and Mn˃Cu˃Zn˃Fe˃Ni˃Cd, respectively. The HQ values of all analysed metals were found << 1, indicating that ingestion of tea infusion with analysed heavy metals should not cause a danger to human health. However, this study further demonstrates the consumption of tea infusion prepared from made tea around the vicinity of NH may contribute to a significantly higher quantity of metal intake in the human body. From the hierarchical cluster analysis, it has been observed that there are three homogenous groups of analysed heavy metals.

Even though nanotechnology is extensively applied in agriculture, biochemistry, medicine and many other sectors, it is a developing field that conforms to new and more complex applications in food systems as compared to other technologies. It offers a viable strategy for integrating cutting-edge technology into a wide range of operations related to the production, development, fabrication, packaging, storage and distribution of food. The most fundamentally sophisticated technology in nano-based food science, nanoparticles deal with a wide range of nanostructured materials and nano methods, including nanofood, nanotubes, nanocomposites, nano packaging, nanocapsules, nanosensors, liposomes, nanoemulsions, polymeric nanoparticles and nanoencapsulation. This method is developed to increase food solubility and shelf life, availability of bioactive chemical, the protection of food constituents, nutritional supplementation, fortification and food or constituent delivery. Additionally, it serves as an antibacterial agent by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) which cause bacterial DNA damage, protein denaturation and cell damage. Although the use of nanotechnology in food applications is advancing, there are certain negative or dangerous effects on health related to the toxicity and dangers of ingesting nanoparticles in food. The use of nanotechnology in the food industry, notably in processing, preservation and packaging, with its promising future, was addressed in this study. The toxicity of nanoparticles in food as well as its development in food safety assessments with certain areas of concern were also reviewed.

The objectives of the research were to isolate phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) from the rhizoplane of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cv. BRRIdhan 29 cultivated in acidic soils of Tangail in Bangladesh and evaluate their performances in phosphate solubilization in both in vitro and in vivo conditions. A total of 10 bacterial strains were isolated and purified by repeated streak culture on nutrient agar medium. Upon screening, five isolates (OS01, OS03, OS07, OS08 and OS10) showed varying levels of phosphate solubilizing activity in agar plate and broth assays. Among them, the strain OS07 (B1) and two previously isolated PSB strains B2 and B3 were selected for evaluation for their performances in rice alone or in combination of TSP (triple super phosphate: P1) and rock phosphate (P2). Plant height and the number of tillers per plant were significantly increased by all PSB isolates when used in combination with TSP but PSB alone did not influence much on plant height and the number of tillers except B1. The levels of mineral nutrients content in rice plant tissues were generally increased by the application of the PSB in combination with TSP, while the performances of B1 isolate was superior in all aspects to B2 and B3 isolates.
