m-Xylene is a volatile organic compound that is extensively used in various industrial processes. It is toxic, posing significant risks to human health and the environment. Therefore, developing gas sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity for m-xylene detection is critical. In this work, we demonstrated the synthesis of NiO-yolk double-shell (NiO-YDS) and NiO-yolk triple-shell (NiO-YTS) derived from NiO/Ni-BTC and NiO/Ni-PTA composites, respectively, using the microwave-assisted solvothermal method from Ni-BTC-derived NiO spheres. The NiO/Ni-BTC composite has trimesic acid (H3BTC) as an organic linker, while NiO/Ni-PTA has p-terephthalic acid (PTA). We investigated the sensing properties of these materials for 2-butanone, 2-nonanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol, acetone, benzene, ethanol, methanol, and m-xylene. These composites exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity for detecting m-xylene under dry conditions. Specifically, the NiO-YTS sensor showed a sensitivity of 217.5% to m-xylene, while the NiO-YDS sensor demonstrated a sensitivity of 179.8% at 350 °C in dry air. We emphasize the NiO-YTS composite due to its superior sensitivity and selectivity in detecting m-xylene compared with the NiO-YDS composite. The NiO-YTS sensor exhibited stable and reproducible sensing performance for 100 ppm of m-xylene under optimum working conditions, with a theoretical detection limit of 5.43 ppb and relatively fast response time (89 s) and recovery time (191 s). This work describes an easy method for synthesizing NiO-YDS and NiO-YTS derived from NiO/Ni-BTC and NiO/Ni-PTA composites. It demonstrates that these composites represent a new class of materials that can potentially enhance the sensitivity and selectivity of m-xylene gas sensors.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study utilizing with a standardized model (MASCIS Impactor) of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) in Balb C mouse model with implantation of mononuclear stem cells derived from the human umbilical cord and placenta blood in the early chronic phase of SCI. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nerve regeneration and motor functional recovery in Balb C mice with surgically induced paraplegia in response to the use of mononuclear stem cells, in early chronic phase (> 2 weeks and < 6 months), because there is yet potential of neuronal and functional recovery as the neuronal scar is not still completely established. METHODS: Forty-eight mice were randomly assigned to 6 groups of 8 animals. Group 1 received the stem cells 3 weeks after the trauma, and Group 2 received them six weeks later. In Group 3, saline solution was injected at the site of the lesion 3 weeks after the trauma, and in Group 4, 6 weeks later. Group 5 underwent only spinal cord injury and Group 6 underwent laminectomy only. The scales used for motor assessment were BMS and MFS for 12 weeks. RESULTS: The intervention groups showed statistically significant motor improvement. In the histopathological analysis, the intervention groups had a lower degree of injury (p < 0.05). Regarding axonal budding, the intervention groups showed increasing in axonal budding in the caudal portion (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of stem cells in mice in the chronic phase after 3 and 6 weeks of SCI brings functional and histopathological benefits to them.

BACKGROUND: Brazil has one of the planet's greatest biodiversity, with over 20% of the world's total species. The Brazilian Atlantic Forest (BAF) spans 17 Brazilian states, making it the third-largest biome in Brazil. The BAF is composed of a range of ecological formations, with climatic conditions and landscape diversity that directly contribute to the different structures of the forest. The fragmentation of the original habitats, mainly due to anthropogenic activities, is one of the main causes of biodiversity loss, causing the decline and habitat loss for several species, including birds and mammals. While there has been extensive research on species diversity in forest fragments or protected areas, there is a lack of basic research in agricultural ecosystems. Only 1.5% of the studies on bird occurrence data in the BAF were reported from pasture habitats and 1.4% from exotic tree plantations. To address this gap, the present systematic map protocol aims to carry out a bibliographic survey on the presence of birds and mammals in agricultural landscapes and its adjacent areas of natural vegetation to describe the prevalence of species across different (semi-)natural and anthropogenic habitat types. Collecting this data is important to support environmental management policies to preserve biodiversity in these areas. METHODS: We will conduct a systematic literature review on the biodiversity of birds and mammals in agricultural landscapes within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest as well as adjacent areas of natural vegetation. Our search will cover the following databases, without limiting the year of publication: Web of Knowledge, Scopus, and PubMed. We will also include grey literature such as dissertations and theses, performing the search at the "Biblioteca Digital Brasileira" database. The results will be screened for relevance based on predefined criteria. The screening process will take place in two stages: firstly, the articles will be screened by title and abstract, and then the eligible articles will be screened in full text. Only articles that meet the eligibility criteria will proceed to data extraction. The extracted data will provide the elements to build a systematic map.

Aim: Promoter methylation of LINE-1 may be affected by prematurity, but there is little evidence in the literature.Materials & methods: Blood from premature and full-term neonates on days 0, 5, 30 and 90 was analyzed for DNA methylation percentage in a promoter region of the LINE-1, after bisulfite conversion and pyrosequencing.Results: Premature infants, as a whole, showed significantly lower methylation percentage at birth, but this difference diminished over time. However, the subgroup of extremely premature (<28 weeks gestational age) had higher methylation percentages, similar to full-term newborns.Conclusion: This research underscores the critical role of prematurity on the methylation pattern of LINE-1. These findings underline the complexity of epigenetic regulation in prematurity and emphasize the need for further studies.
Premature birth can have significant effects on a baby's development and long-term health. This study investigates how being born prematurely affects a process called DNA methylation, which can influence how genes are turned on or off. Specifically, we examined the LINE-1 promoter, a frequently occurring region of DNA known for its role in regulating gene activity.We collected blood samples from both premature and full-term newborns at birth and at several points in the early months of life. Our findings showed that premature babies have lower levels of LINE-1 promoter methylation at birth compared with full-term babies. These differences in methylation could possibly affect the babies' development and health as they grow.Our research highlights the need for continued study in this area to explore how these epigenetic changes impact long-term health and to develop strategies to mitigate these effects.

Cyanobacterial blooms are common events that releases secondary metabolites into water posing considerable threats to the environment, wildlife, and public health. Some of these metabolites, such as microcystin, have been extensively studied and associated with harmful effects in mammals and aquatic organisms, while the biological effects of others, like geosmin, remain much less investigated. Enhancing our understanding of cyanotoxins effects on organisms is especially relevant facing the complex scenarios projected due to global warming. The aim of this study was to assess the transcriptional modulation in whole zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae (n = 9) in response to a 7-days immersion exposure to 3 µg L-1 MCLR or 5 µg L-1 geosmin. No mortality or differences in length gain were observed in zebrafish larvae exposed to environmentally realistic doses of both cyanotoxins. The exposure to MCLR and to geosmin caused the differential expression of 164 and 172 genes respectively, being 23 upregulated by MCLR and 98 upregulated by geosmin. Among the upregulated genes, 16 were shared, while 42 were shared among the downregulated genes. Over-representation analysis identified three enriched GO terms only among the genes upregulated by geosmin: organic hydroxy compound metabolic process (1901615), small molecule biosynthetic process (0044283), and lipid metabolic process (0006629). In fact, the expression of 12 of the 13 genes directly involved in the synthesis of cholesterol from acetyl-CoA was upregulated by geosmin. A chronic upregulation of cholesterol biosynthetic pathway is linked to several diseases and metabolic disorders, including alterations in sex-related hormones. Moreover, our results indicate that geosmin and MCLR acts through different mechanisms. Geosmin does not appear to provoke short-term adverse effects as MCLR but could disrupt the endocrine system by altering the lipid and steroid metabolism.

There is currently no efficacious intervention for preventing post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). Preclinical studies support the potential use of anticholinergics for this condition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of biperiden as an intervention for preventing PTE. A randomized, double-blinded clinical trial was conducted at HC/FMUSP between 2018-2022. Adults with acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) were randomly assigned to receive biperiden or placebo, for 10 days. The primary outcome was the incidence of PTE while the secondary outcomes included the frequency of seizures, the frequency of any adverse events and mortality after 24 months. The study was powered at a planned enrolment of 132 patients. The trial began in January 2018 and was halted by researchers on March 2020 (and terminated in December 2022) in the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, 123 participants were randomized and 112 contributed with data for modified mITT analysis, being that 61 (49.5%) participants completed the 24-month follow-up consult. Data analysis indicated lack of evidence of biperiden for either, the incidence of post-traumatic epilepsy (2.6, 95%CI, 0.65-10.57; p = 0.170) or the mortality rate (1.57, 95%CI, 0.73-3.38; p = 0.248). The frequency of late post-traumatic seizures was higher for biperiden group (2.03, 95%CI = 0.912-3.1597; p <0.001). The present study suggests that there was insufficient evidence regarding the effect of biperiden in preventing PTE after TBI, which underpins the need for larger studies. Objective: Throughout microsurgical anastomosis, many surgeons use topical vasodilators in order to reduce pathological vasospasm. It was carried out an experimental study comparing the effectiveness of topical use of Nitroglycerin, Papaverine, Magnesium sulfate over a control group in the femoral artery and vein of rats, in reducing prolonged vasospasm. Methods: Randomized comparative experimental study in 15 rats, divided into four groups. The external diameter of the vases soaked in the randomized solution was measured. For statistical analysis, it was calculated the percentual increase in the external diameter of the vessels. Results: A statistically significant increase in arterial dilation was observed after 10 minutes of topical application of 10% magnesium sulfate compared to the control group, with p = 0.044 . No other drug showed a vasodilator effect superior to the control group. Magnesium sulfate at 10% is still not used in microsurgery and costs 15 times less than papaverine, the standard drug for topical vasodilation in clinical cases at our service. Conclusion: Magnesium sulfate had better vasodilating effects over the control group after 10 minutes of arterial microanastomosis. None of the tested drugs have presented superior vasodilating effects over each other nor the control group after venous microanastomosis. Level of evidence II, Experimental study, Randomized Trial.
Objetivo: Durante a anastomose microcirúrgica, muitos cirurgiões utilizam vasodilatadores tópicos para reduzir o vasoespasmo prolongado patológico, assim reduzindo o risco de complicações vasculares. Entretanto, ainda faltam dados experimentais para identificação da droga padrão-ouro para vasodilatadores tópicos em microcirurgia e sua avaliação de análise de custo, já que a droga geralmente utilizada para este objetivo é baseada, na maior parte dos casos, na experiência do cirurgião. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo experimental comparativo randomizado, avaliando a eficácia do uso tópico de Nitroglicerina, Papaverina e Sulfato de Magnésio em relação a um grupo controle, na redução do vasoespasmo na artéria e veia femoral de ratos. Foram avaliados o diâmetro externo dos vasos embebidos em solução randomizada dos fármacos para vasodilatação. Após cálculo do aumento percentual no diâmetro externo dos vasos, foi realizada análise estatística. Resultados: Observou-se aumento estatisticamente significativo da dilatação arterial após 10 minutos de aplicação tópica de sulfato de magnésio a 10% em relação ao grupo controle, com p = 0,044. Nenhuma outra droga apresentou efeito vasodilatador superior ao grupo controle. O sulfato de magnésio a 10% ainda não é utilizado em microcirurgia e apresenta custo até 15 vezes menor quando comparado com a papaverina, droga padrão para vasodilatação tópica em casos clínicos em nosso serviço. Conclusão: O sulfato de magnésio apresentou melhor efeito vasodilatador quando comparado ao grupo controle, após 10 minutos da microanastomose arterial. Nenhum dos fármacos testados apresentou efeito vasodilatador superior após a microanastomose venosa. Nível de Evidência II, Estudo experimental, Ensaio Randomizado.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate exclusive breastfeeding at discharge and hospital length-of-stay in pre-term infants undergoing or not the Kangaroo-Mother Care Method (KMC). Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted including preterm infants < 1800 g admitted to the neonatal unit of a KMC reference center. The infants were grouped into the KMC group and the non-KMC group. Multiple logistic and Poisson regressions were performed to evaluate the association between the KMC and two outcomes, exclusive breastfeeding at discharge, and hospital length-of-stay, adjusted for potential confounders. Results: 115 mother-infant dyads were included, 78 in the KMC group and 37 in the non-KMC group. In the bivariate analysis, the KMC group had a lower prevalence of maternal adverse conditions (6% vs. 32%, p < 0.001), a higher number of prenatal visits (median 6 vs. 3.5, p < 0.001), higher gestational ages (median 32 vs. 31 weeks, p < 0.05), higher birth weights (median 1530 vs. 1365 g, p < 0.01), a lower prevalence of necrotizing enterocolitis (3.8% vs. 16.2%, p < 0.05), parenteral nutrition (50% vs. 73%, p < 0.05), and deep vascular access (49.7% vs. 78.4%, p < 0.01), a higher prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding (65% vs. 8%, p < 0.001) and a shorter length of hospital stay (median 28 vs. 42 days, p < 0.001). In the multiple regression analysis, the KMC group was 23 times more likely to be exclusively breastfed at discharge (OR = 23.1; 95% CI = 4,85-109,93) and had a 19% reduction in the hospital length-of-stay (IDR = 0.81; 95% CI = 0.76-0.86) compared to the non-KMC group. Conclusions: The KMC is associated with better short-term neonatal outcomes and should be encouraged in all Brazilian maternity hospitals.

Since 2019, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) has actively developed pesticide environmental risk assessment (ERA) frameworks adapted to Brazil's specific ecological contexts. This initiative, supported by funding from the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and in partnership with academic institutions, has led to a concerted effort to establish ERA protocols for various taxa, including birds and mammals, soil organisms, aquatic organisms, and reptiles and amphibians. The outcomes of this initiative were disseminated in two distinct workshops held in February and November of 2023, where the agency showcased its research to the technical-regulatory community. This article synthesizes the proposals for birds and mammals and soil organisms. First, we summarize the agency's proposals for both focal and generic species to be incorporated into the ERA and the methodologies for calculating exposure of these taxa to pesticides through agricultural practices, encompassing seed treatment and foliar applications. On this occasion, IBAMA also disclosed the risk assessment tool that the agency is developing for birds and mammals. IBAMA highlighted the knowledge gaps that must be bridged to progress from preliminary (lower-tier) to more comprehensive (higher-tier) assessments. Regarding soil organisms, during the workshop, the presenters shared findings on the most prevalent species of earthworms and enchytraeids in Brazil. They emphasized the need for additional data collection on a regional scale. The agency has also proposed methods for estimating soil organism exposure to pesticides at a screening level and identified specific data gaps that could be addressed to refine assessments at higher tiers. In summary, the workshop communicated the progress in establishing ERA guidelines, which we encapsulate here to benefit the technical-regulatory community. Objective: To analyze the death of Brazilian pregnant and postpartum women due to COVID-19 or unspecific cause. Methods: This is retrospective, descriptive-exploratory, population-based study carried out with the Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe (SIVEP-Gripe) database, with pregnant and postpartum women of reproductive age who died from confirmed COVID-19 between 2020 and 2021. The chosen variables were: age, gestational period, type and number of comorbidities, skin color, using the statistical software R Foundation for Statistical Computing Platform, version 4.0.3 and Statistical Package for Social Science, version 29.0 for analysis. Results: A total of 19,333 cases of pregnant and postpartum women aged between 10 and 55 years diagnosed with SARS were identified, whether due to confirmed COVID-19 or unspecific causes. Of these, 1,279 died, these cases were classified into two groups according to the cause of death: deaths from COVID-19 (n= 1,026) and deaths from SARS of unspecific cause (n= 253). Conclusion: The risk of death increased among black and brown women, in the postpartum period and with the presence of comorbidities, mainly diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and obesity. The data presented here draw attention to the number of deaths from SARS, especially among sociodemographic profiles, precarious access to health, such as the black population. In addition, limitations in adequate access to health care are reinforced by even lower rates of ICU admissions among women who died from SARS of an unspecified cause.

One of the principal byproducts of coffee roasting is the coffee parchment. It is abundant in bioactive substances, including derivatives of chlorogenic acids, which are well-known for their exceptional antioxidant effects. It is advantageous to use environmentally friendly extraction techniques on such residues since it adds value to the entire coffee production process supply chain. The aim of this work was to assess and enhance the ability of non-conventional extraction techniques to extract derivatives of chlorogenic acid from coffee parchment. A central composite design was used to maximize the recovery of those phenolic compounds. The optimized extraction conditions were with 5 min extraction period, at a temperature of 70 °C, and 80% ethanol in the extractor solvent. In this conditions extraction recovery of chlorogenic acids was of 0.8% by the use of microwave-aided extraction (MAE). The optimized conditions are practical, economical, and ecologically friendly method to extract phenolic compounds and, consequently, underscores the potential for sustainable utilization of coffee parchment, offering a valuable contribution to the development of environmentally conscious strategies within the coffee industry.

CONTEXT: Although quantum mechanical calculations have proven effective in accurately predicting UV absorption and assessing the antioxidant potential of compounds, the utilization of computer-aided drug design (CADD) to support sustainable synthesis research of new sunscreen active ingredients remains an area with limited exploration. Furthermore, there are ongoing concerns about the safety and effectiveness of existing sunscreens. Therefore, it remains crucial to investigate photoprotection mechanisms and develop enhanced strategies for mitigating the harmful effects of UVR exposure, improving both the safety and efficacy of sunscreen products. A previous study conducted synthesis research on eight novel hybrid compounds (I-VIII) for use in sunscreen products by molecular hybridization of trans-resveratrol (RESV), avobenzone (AVO), and octinoxate (OMC). Herein, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations performed in the gas phase on the isolated hybrid compounds (I-VIII) proved to reproduce the experimental UV absorption. Resveratrol-avobenzone structure-based hybrids (I-IV) present absorption maxima in the UVB range with slight differences between them, while resveratrol-OMC structure-based hybrids (V-VIII) showed main absorption in the UVA range. Among RESV-OMC hybrids, compounds V and VI exhibited higher UV absorption intensity, and compound VIII stood out for its broad-spectrum coverage in our simulations. Furthermore, both in silico and in vitro analyses revealed that compounds VII and VIII exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, with compound I emerging as the most reactive antioxidant within RESV-AVO hybrids. The study suggests a preference for the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism over single-electron transfer followed by proton transfer (SET-PT) in the gas phase. With a strong focus on sustainability, this approach reduces costs and minimizes effluent production in synthesis research, promoting the eco-friendly development of new sunscreen active ingredients. METHODS: The SPARTAN'20 program was utilized for the geometry optimization and energy calculations of all compounds. Conformer distribution analysis was performed using the Merck molecular force field 94 (MMFF94), and geometry optimization was carried out using the parametric method 6 (PM6) followed by density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d)). The antioxidant behavior of the hybrid compounds (I-VIII) was determined using the highest occupied molecular orbital (εHOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (εLUMO) energies, as well as the bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), ionization potential (IP), and proton dissociation enthalpy (PDE) values, all calculated at the same level of structural optimization. TD-DFT study is carried out to calculate the excitation energy using the B3LYP functional with the 6-31G(d) basis set. The calculated transitions were convoluted with a Gaussian profile using the Gabedit program.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify and describe the available evidence on the effect of magnifying devices (loupe or microscope) on the performance of restorative dental preparations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for scoping reviews and registered on the INPLASY database. An electronic search was performed in four databases and Grey literature for articles published until November 2023. Eligibility criteria were determined using the PICOS strategy and comprised studies that evaluated the performance of magnification devices for restorative dental preparations. A bibliographic mapping of the evidence was conducted. RESULTS: Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Most of the studies (n = 12) compared the performance of dental preparations using magnification loupes vs. no magnification. The magnification for loupes and microscopes ranged from 2.5x to 4.0x and 6.4x to 10x, respectively. The use of magnifying loupes improved the performance of restorative preparations in 66.6% of the evaluated studies. However, when the magnifications were compared, the greater magnification provided by microscopes did not improve preparation performance compared to magnification loupes. Regarding the place of publication, the American continent concentrates the most significant number of evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Although evidence for magnification improving the performance of dental preparations has increased over the last decade, basically only in vitro studies (most of which have taken place in the Americas) have been reported in the literature. The evidence suggests that magnification significantly improves restorative preparation performance when compared to non-magnification. However, higher magnifications (e.g., microscopes) do not appear to improve tooth preparation performance compared with lower magnification devices (e.g., magnification loupes). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Available evidence supports that using magnification can improve the performance of restored tooth preparations. However, high magnifications have no advantages over lower magnifications.

Since 2019, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) has actively developed pesticide environmental risk assessment (ERA) frameworks adapted to Brazil's specific ecological contexts. This endeavor, supported by funding from the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and in partnership with academic institutions, has led to a concerted effort to establish ERA protocols for various taxa, including birds and mammals, soil organisms, aquatic organisms, and reptiles and amphibians. The outcomes of this initiative were conveyed in two workshops held in February and November 2023, during which the agency communicated its findings to the technical-regulatory community. This article represents one of two articles that provide more detailed insights into the ERA propositions for all taxa. In this article, we summarize the proposals for aquatic organisms presented and discussed during the workshops, which can be used as an informational source by the technical-regulatory community. Antimicrobial films were prepared with chitosan containing the methanolic extract of M. tenuiflora leaves (FECT20%, FECT30%, and FECT40%), and their antimicrobial activities were evaluated by agar diffusion. The films were characterized by IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and TG/DTG curves. TG/DTG curves showed thermal stability of chitosan-extract films up to 166 ºC. Micrographs of chitosan-extract films revealed an increase in porosity with the addition of extract. The FECT40% film showed inhibition zone diameters (IZ) against Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and B. cereus, ranging from 1.0 ± 0.02 to 0.72 ± 0.09 cm. Only FECT30% and FECT40% inhibited the P. aeruginosa with IZs of 0.68 ± 0.02 and 0.77 ± 0.06 cm, respectively. In turn, the extract showed inhibition against B. subtilis and B. cereus, with IZs values of 0.92 ± 0.2 cm and 0.72 ± 0.05 cm, respectively. Additionally, the crude extract presented antioxidant potential with inhibition percentages of 32.74% ± 0.90 for ABTS and 27.04% ± 1.36 for DPPH. The antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the crude extract, as well as the antimicrobial property of chitosan-extract films, suggests the potential of these biopolymers for the development of wound healing bandages and new food packaging alternatives.

PURPOSE: Maternal high-fat diet (HF) programs obesity, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia associated with increased endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the liver of adult male rat offspring. We hypothesized that maternal HF would induce sex specific ECS changes in the liver of newborn rats, prior to obesity onset, and maternal fish oil (FO) supplementation would reprogram the ECS and lipid metabolism markers preventing liver triglycerides (TG) accumulation. METHODS: Female rats received a control (CT) (10.9% fat) or HF (28.7% fat) diet 8 weeks prior to mating and during pregnancy. A subgroup of HF dams received 3% FO supplementation in the HF diet (35.4% fat) during pregnancy (HFFO). Serum hormones and liver TG, ECS, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and autophagy markers were assessed in male and female newborn offspring. RESULTS: Maternal HF diet increased liver cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) in males and decreased CB2 in females, with no effect on liver TG. Maternal FO supplementation reduced liver CB1 regardless of the offspring sex, but reduced TG liver content only in females. FO reduced the liver content of the endocannabinoid anandamide in males, and the content of 2-arachidonoylglycerol in both sexes. Maternal HF increased lipogenic and decreased lipid oxidation markers, and FO induced the opposite regulation in the liver of offspring. CONCLUSION: Prenatal HF and FO differentially modulate liver ECS in the offspring before obesity and MASLD development. These results suggest that maternal nutrition at critical stages of development can modulate the offspring's ECS, predisposing or preventing the onset of metabolic diseases.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep deprivation is a potential risk factor for metabolic diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. We evaluated the impacts of moderate chronic sleep deprivation on glucose and lipid homeostasis in adult rats. METHODS: Wistar rats (both sexes) were sleep-perturbed daily for 2 hours at the early (06:00-08:00) and the late light cycle (16:00-18:00) five days a week (except weekends) for 4 weeks. RESULTS: Sleep perturbation (SP) resulted in reduced body weight gain in both sexes, associated with altered food intake and reduced adiposity. SP did not alter the short- or long-term memories or cause anxiogenic behavior. No major changes were observed in the plasma insulin, leptin, triacylglycerol, non-esterified fatty acids, and blood glucose upon SP. After SP, females exhibited a transitory glucose intolerance, while males became glucose intolerant at the end of the experimental period. Male rats also developed higher insulin sensitivity at the end of the SP protocol. Morphometric analyses revealed no changes in hepatic glycogen deposition, pancreatic islet mass, islet-cell distribution, or adrenal cortex thickness in SP rats from both sexes, except for lower adipocyte size compared with controls. We did not find homogeneous changes in the relative expression of circadian and metabolic genes in muscle or hepatic tissues from the SP rats. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate chronic SP reduces visceral adiposity and causes glucose intolerance with a more pronounced impact on male rats, reinforcing the metabolic risks of exposure to sleep disturbances.

Ocotea, the largest genus in the Lauraceae family, encompasses numerous species of scientific interest. However, most Ocotea species have only been described morphologically. This study used an untargeted metabolomics workflow with UHPLC-HRMS and GNPS-FBMN to provide the first chemical evaluation of the polar specialized metabolites of O. delicata leaves. Leaves from three O. delicata specimens were extracted using ultrasound-assisted extraction with 70% ethanol. Among the examined samples, 44 metabolites, including alkaloids and flavonoids, were identified. In contrast to other Ocotea species, O. delicata has a wider diversity of kaempferol derivatives than quercetin. The biomass of the specimens showed a significant correlation with the chemical profile. The similarity among specimens was mostly determined by the concentrations of quinic acid, kaempferol glycosides, and boldine. The evaluated specimens exhibited chemical features similar to those of species classified as New World Ocotea, with the coexistence of aporphine and benzylisoquinoline alkaloids.

INTRODUÇÃO: As tendências e fatores associados à mortalidade materna por COVID-19 em mulheres, em nível nacional e internacional, destaca a disparidade racial nos desfechos da doença. OBJETIVO: Investigar mortalidade de mulheres brasileiras em idade reprodutiva entre 10-49 anos através do Observatório Obstétrico Brasileiro (OOBr) no período de 2020 a 2023. MÉTODO: Trata-se de um estudo transversal do tipo de base populacional realizado entre janeiro de 2020 e dezembro de 2023 no Brasil com mulheres em idade reprodutiva, incluídos dados demográficos como: idade, cor da pele, região geopolítica, sinais e sintomas, presença ou ausência de comorbidade, hospitalização em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva, cura e óbito por COVID-19. RESULTADOS: O ano de 2021 registrou o maior número de casos, indicando um possível pico na disseminação da doença, especialmente entre mulheres negras. A faixa etária de 20 a 34 anos apresentou a maior quantidade de casos, e a região Sul e Noroeste registraram as maiores quantidades de óbitos. A análise apontou para a obesidade como um fator de risco significativo para complicações graves da COVID-19 em gestantes e puérperas. A necessidade de hospitalização em UTI e suporte ventilatório aumentou ao longo dos anos, com taxas mais altas em 2021. DISCUSSÃO: As classificações inadequadas de óbito podem afetar os resultados. A análise é restrita às informações disponíveis no OOBr, e outras variáveis relevantes podem não estar presentes nos registros. CONCLUSÃO: O estudo destaca a complexidade das interações entre a COVID-19 e diferentes grupos populacionais, destacando a necessidade de intervenções, políticas de saúde pública e abordagem multidisciplinar para garantir melhores resultados de saúde para população obstétrica.
INTRODUCTION: The trends and factors associated with maternal mortality from COVID-19 in women nationally and internationally highlight the racial disparity in the outcomes of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mortality of Brazilian women of reproductive age between 10- 49 years through the Brazilian Obstetric Observatory (OOBr) from 2020 to 2023. METHOD: This is a cross-sectional population-based study carried out between January 2020 and December 2023 in Brazil with women of reproductive age, including demographic data such as: age, skin color, geopolitical region,; signs and symptoms, presence or absence of comorbidity, hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit, cure and death from COVID-19. RESULTS: The year 2021 recorded the highest number of cases, indicating a possible peak in the spread of the disease, especially among black women. The 20-34 age group had the highest number of cases, and the South and Northwest regions had the highest number of deaths. The analysis pointed to obesity as a significant risk factor for serious complications from COVID-19 in pregnant and puerperal women. The need for ICU hospitalization and ventilatory support increased over the years, with higher rates in 2021. DISCUSSION: Inadequate death classifications can affect the results. The analysis is restricted to the information available on OOBr, and other relevant variables may not be present in the records. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the complexity of the interactions between COVID-19 and different population groups, highlighting the need for interventions, public health policies and a multidisciplinary approach to ensure better health outcomes for the obstetric population.

DISCUSIÓN: Las clasificaciones inadecuadas de las defunciones pueden afectar a los resultados. El análisis está restringido a la información disponible sobre OOBr, y otras variables relevantes pueden no estar presentes en los registros. CONCLUSIÓN: El estudio pone de relieve la complejidad de las interacciones entre el COVID-19 y los diferentes grupos de población, haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de intervenciones, políticas de salud pública y un enfoque multidisciplinario para garantizar mejores resultados de salud para la población obstétrica.
