RESUMEN

Chitosan-based hybrid nanocomposites, containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), graphene oxide (GO), and borate as crosslinking agents, were successfully prepared by solution-casting technique. The synergistic effect of the two fillers, and the role of the cross-linker, in enhancing the structural and functional properties of the chitosan polymer, was investigated. XPS results confirm the chemical interaction between borate ions and hydroxyl groups of chitosan, GO, and CNCs. The morphological characterization shows that the GO sheets are oriented along the casting surface, whereas the CNC particles are homogenously distributed in the sample. Results of tensile tests reveal that the presence of graphene oxide enhances the elastic modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness of chitosan, while cellulose and borate induce an increase in the elastic modulus and stress at the yield point. In particular, the borate-crosslinked chitosan-based sample containing 0.5 wt% of GO and 0.5 wt% of CNCs shows an elongation at a break value of 30.2% and a toughness value of 988 J*m-3 which are improved by 124% and 216%, respectively, compared with the pristine chitosan. Moreover, the water permeability results show that the presence of graphene oxide slightly increases the water barrier properties, whereas the borate and cellulose nanocrystals significantly reduce the water vapor permeability of the polymer by about 50%. Thus, by modulating the content of the two reinforcing fillers, it is possible to obtain chitosan-based nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical and water barrier properties which can be potentially used in various applications such as food and electronic packaging.

RESUMEN

The present study is focused on the development and characterization of innovative cementitious-based composite sensors. In particular, multifunctional cement mortars with enhanced piezoresistive properties are realized by exploiting the concept of confinement of Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) in a three-dimensional percolated network through the use of a natural-rubber latex aqueous dispersion. The manufactured cement-based composites were characterized by means of Inelastic Neutron Scattering to assess the hydration reactions and the interactions between natural rubber and the hydrated-cement phases and by Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction to evaluate the morphological and mineralogical structure, respectively. Piezo-resistive properties to assess electro-mechanical behavior in strain condition are also measured. The results show that the presence of natural rubber latex allows to obtain a three-dimensional rGO/MWCNTs segregate structure which catalyzes the formation of hydrated phases of the cement and increases the piezo-resistive sensitivity of mortar composites, representing a reliable approach in developing innovative mortar-based piezoresistive strain sensors.

RESUMEN

Chitosan (CS) aerogels were prepared by freeze-drying as potential adsorbents for water purification, and the effect of the strategy of crosslinking was investigated by varying the amount of crosslinker (glutaraldehyde) and the sequence of steps for the preparation of the aerogel. Two procedures were compared, in which the crosslinking step was carried out before or after the freeze-drying of the starting CS solution. When crosslinking was postponed after the freeze-drying step, the adsorption capacity towards an anionic dye, such as indigo carmine, considerably increased (up to +45%), reaching values as high as 534.4 ± 30.5 mg g-1. The same crosslinking strategy ensured a comparable improvement also in nanocomposite aerogels containing graphene oxide (GO), which was added to enhance the mechanical strength and provide adsorption capacity towards cationic dyes. Besides possessing good mechanical strength (compressive modulus higher than 1 MPa), the CS/GO aerogels were able to bind also cationic pollutants such as methylene blue. The maximum uptake capacity increased from 4.3 ± 1.6 to 168.6 ± 9.6 mg of cationic dye adsorbed per gram of adsorbent with respect to pristine CS aerogels.

RESUMEN

We report on 2 boys (maternal cousins), with severe congenital ataxia with generalized hypotonia, psychomotor retardation and recurrent bronchopulmonary infections. Later, they developed myoclonic encephalopathy and macular degeneration. Serial brain imaging investigations showed a cyst of the septum pellucidum, persistence of the cavum vergae, corpus callosum and cerebellar vermis hypoplasia without cortical atrophy. In the maternal pedigree, 5 males had recurrent bronchopneumonia associated with severe congenital hypotonia and died during the first years of life. Neurophysiological studies, including nerve conduction velocities, brainstem auditory evoked responses, somatosensory evoked potentials were normal. Electroretinogram showed normal wave morphology. Visual evoked potentials were mildly impaired. Extensive screening for metabolic disease gave normal results. Immunologic investigations showed normal T and B cell number, T cell function and immunoglobulin levels in both patients with a reduced level of IgG2 subclass in one.

RESUMEN

Sixty-five cases of the Kaufman-McKusick syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder, have been thus far reported in the literature. In the female, hydrometrocolpos and postaxial polydactyly are the prominent features of the disorder, and together with congenital heart disease form the distinctive triad of symptoms characterizing this entity. Since the initial reports, multiple other anomalies have been reported in the affected patients. Hydrometrocolpos, especially if unrecognized, may be a life-threatening condition in the newborn girl. We present a child with the features of the syndrome, and a staphyloma of the left eye, which necessitated its enucleation.

RESUMEN

All the secondary school students of the Albanian and Croatian communities of Molise were tested for colour vision. Percent frequencies of red-green colour blindness were 5.91 +/- 1.73 and 7.02 +/- 3.38. These figures are in agreement with those found for Central Italy thus confirming the similarity of these communities with the rest of Italy as described for several other autosomal polymorphisms. The distribution of red-green CB genes in Europe shows that they are slightly more frequent in Northern Europe than in Southern Europe and Northern Africa.

RESUMEN

A total of 3,285 young males selected at random from the school population of Rome have been administered the Ishihara plates for colour blindness. Those who failed to read all plates correctly were further administered Farnsworth's Panel D-15 and the diagnoses of colour blindness were made by an ophthalmologist and cross checked. A total of 201 subjects were found to be colour-blind, allowing a gene frequency estimate of 0.061 +/- 0.004. This is the first reliable estimate for the Italian population and appears to be lower than for other Caucasoid populations. The gene frequency of colour blindness is known to increase from 0.02-0.04 in 'primitive' populations to 0.07-0.09 in Caucasoid populations, possibly as a result of a selection relaxation.

RESUMEN

Apparent displacement of an edge from the subjective visual vertical is typically induced by the simultaneous inspection of a large rotating textured background. In the present series of experiments we have tested the binocular integration of such an effect in normal and stereoblind observers in whom inspection of the rotating background and vision of the vertical edge are presented to different eyes. In normal subjects there was no difference between the binocular and the dichoptic viewing condition while in stereoblind subjects there was a clearcut decrease in the strength of the tilt effect under dichoptic conditions. A residual tilt effect, however, was still present in the latter group under dichoptic conditions and this shows that binocular interactions related to visual tilt can be dissociated from those required for stereopsis.

RESUMEN

The experiments were prompted by the need felt in pharmacology of eyes with hypertension of easy availability, rather long duration and fairly constant levels, to allow observation of the effects of hypotensive agents and to study their mechanism of action. Single doses of 1 mg Triethyltin, a substance producing a hydrodynamic compromission of the brain, were injected into the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes. A rise in ocular tension, beginning within 24 hours and lasting seven to ten days is obtained in about 70% of eyes. The pressure increase ranged from 12 to 30 mm Hg. Biomicroscopic and histologic examinations evidenced an uveitis-like reaction in the first week after treatment. Neoprene casts evidenced an impaired vascularization in the ciliary processes and choroid. Topical and parenteral administration of the most commonly used antiglaucomatous drugs showed how well this hypertension responded to hypotonizing agents. The occurrence of producing an ocular hypertension in the untreated fellow eye following repeated intra-cameral injections of small dosage (1 microgram) of Triethyltin, every two days for more than one month, in the other eye is described. Hypertension resulted in 40% of eyes.

RESUMEN

Some premises on the clinical aspects of retinal detachment in patients operated upon for cataract and in conditions of lens dislocation are made. The different aspects of the preoperative prophylaxis (indications, techniques, application time) are dealt with, and the technical procedures used during operation for cataract are described. The authors point out the necessity of a postoperative control of the aphakic eyes, at short-or long-term in order to avoid vitreo retinal alterations.
