RESUMEN

Optimising detergency at lower temperatures is of increasing interest due to environmental and economic factors, and requires a greater understanding of the effects of temperature on the adsorption of surfactant mixtures at interfaces. The adsorption properties of surfactant mixtures and biosurfactant/surfactant mixtures have been studied at room temperatures and at temperatures below ambient using surface tension and neutron reflectivity measurements. For the ternary surfactant mixture of octaethylene monododecyl ether, C12E8, sodium dodecyl 6-benzene sulfonate, LAS, and sodium dioxyethylene glycol monododecyl sulfate, SLES, the surface tension at the air-water interface increases with decreasing temperature. In contrast, there is a notable reduction in the increase in the surface tension with a decrease in temperature from 25 °C to 10 °C for the 5 component rhamnolipid/surfactant mixture of the mono-rhamnose, R1, and di-rhamnose, R2, with C12E8/LAS/SLES. The associated neutron reflectivity data for the ternary C12E8/LAS/SLES mixture and the significant observation is that the 3, 4, and 5-component mixtures containing rhamnolipids in conjunction with the other surfactants show changes in composition and adsorbed amounts of the individual components which are close to the experimental error. However the significant observation is that the neutron reflectivity data indicate that the improved surface tension tolerance at lower temperatures is associated with the dominance of the rhamnolipid adsorption in such mixtures. Hence the introduction of the rhamnolipids provides a tolerance to the adverse effects associated with reduced temperatures, and a potential for improved detergency at relatively low temperatures.

RESUMEN

The composition of the air-water adsorbed layer of a quinary mixture consisting of three conventional surfactants, octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8), dodecane-6-p-sodium benzene sulfonate (LAS6), and diethylene glycol monododecyl ether sodium sulfate (SLE2S), mixed with two biosurfactants, the rhamnolipids l-rhamnosyl-l-rhamnosyl-ß-hydroxydecanoyl-ß-hydroxydecanoyl, R2, and l-rhamnosyl-ß-hydroxydecanoyl-ß-hydroxydecanoyl, R1, has been measured over a range of compositions above the mixed critical micelle concentration. Additional measurements on some of the subsets of ternary and binary mixtures have also been measured by NR. The results have been analyzed using the pseudophase approximation (PPA) in conjunction with an excess free energy, GE, that depends on the quadratic and cubic terms in the composition. The compositions of the binary, ternary, and quinary mixtures could all be fitted to two sets of interaction parameters between the pairs of surfactants, one for micelles and one for adsorption. No ternary interactions or ternary corrections were required. Because the system contains two strongly anionic surfactants, the PPA can be extended, in practice, to ionic surfactants, contrary to the prevailing view. The values of the interaction parameters show that the quinary mixture, SLE2S-LAS6-C12E8-R1-R2, which is known to be a highly effective surfactant system, is characterized by a sequence of strong surface but weak micellar interactions. About half of the minima in GE for the strong surface interactions occur well away from the regular solution value of 0.5.

RESUMEN

The self-assembly of dilute aqueous solutions of a ternary surfactant mixture and rhamnolipid biosurfactant/surfactant mixtures has been studied by small angle neutron scattering. In the ternary surfactant mixture of octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, C12E8, sodium dodecyl 6-benzene sulfonate, LAS, and sodium dioxyethylene monododecyl sulfate, SLES, small globular interacting micelles are observed over the entire composition and concentration range studied. The modelling of the scattering data strongly supports the assumption that the micelle compositions are close to the solution compositions. In the 5-component rhamnolipid/surfactant mixture of the mono-rhamnose, R1, di-rhamnose, R2, rhamnolipids with C12E8/LAS/SLES, globular micelles are observed over much of the concentration and composition range studied. However, for solutions relatively rich in rhamnolipid and LAS, lamellar/micellar coexistence is observed. The transition from globular to more planar structures arises from a synergistic packing in the 5 component mixture. It is not observed in the individual components nor in the ternary C12E8/LAS/SLES mixture at these relatively low concentrations. The results provide an insight into how synergistic packing effects can occur in the solution self-assembly of complex multi-component surfactant mixtures, and give rise to an unexpected evolution in the phase behaviour.

RESUMEN

This is a complete report of an open trial of manualized psychodynamic psychotherapy for treatment of panic disorder, Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP). Twenty-one patients with PD were entered into a trial of twice-weekly, 24-session treatment. Sixteen of 21 experienced remission of panic and agoraphobia. Treatment completers with depression also experienced remission of depression. Improvements in symptoms and in quality of life were substantial and consistent across all measured areas. Symptomatic gains were maintained over 6 months. This report was prepared specifically to describe 6-month follow-up on these patients. Psychodynamic psychotherapy appears to be a promising nonpharmacological treatment for panic disorder.

RESUMEN

The psychoanalytic community increasingly recognizes the importance of research on psychoanalytic treatments, yet a significant number of psychoanalysts continue to believe that research is either irrelevant to psychoanalysis or impossible to accomplish. Psychoanalysts who accept the value of research express concern that intrusions required by research protocols create significant distortions in the psychoanalytic process. The authors, all psychoanalysts, are studying the outcome of a brief (twenty-four-session) psychodynamic treatment of panic disorder. They report their experiences and struggles with the intrusions of videotaping, working with a treatment manual, and time-limited treatment. This research process required them to question old beliefs and to confront feelings of disloyalty toward their analytic training and identity, particularly with regard to keeping a "clean field" and routinely performing long-term analysis of character. The therapists' psychoanalytic knowledge, however, emerged as crucial for them in managing specific research constraints. Despite concerns about providing inadequate treatment, therapists were found to engage patients with psychoanalytic tools and focus in vibrant and productive therapies that led to significant improvements in panic symptoms and associated quality of life. The authors suggest that psychoanalysts have been overestimating the potential damage of research constraints on psychoanalytic process and outcome.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This report contains preliminary data from an open trial of brief psychodynamic psychotherapy for panic disorder. METHOD: Fourteen patients with primary DSM-IV panic disorder completed a 24-session, twice-weekly course of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Other psychiatric treatment was not permitted throughout the 12-week treatment period and the 6-month follow-up. Symptoms were assessed at baseline, treatment termination, and 6-month posttermination follow-up (40 weeks). RESULTS: Statistically significant, clinically meaningful improvements appeared in panic, depression, anxiety, and functional impairment both at treatment termination and at 6-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Psychodynamic monotherapy can be used successfully to retain and treat patients with panic disorder. Psychodynamic interventions warrant further study for patients with panic disorder.

RESUMEN

Both research and clinical work have revealed factors that can lead to the onset and persistence of panic disorder. Preoedipal conflicts intensify the danger of oedipal longings for panic patients. Competition with the same-sex parent is linked with angry preoedipal fantasies and associated fears of disruption in attachments. Fantasies or actual successes can thus trigger panic episodes. Regression to a helpless, dependent state such as panic defends against the danger of aggressive, competitive fantasies and actual achievements. However, the regressive state can also be experienced as dangerous, and can be linked with frightening homosexual fantasies. A reactive aggressive oedipal stance can sometimes result, triggering escalating turmoil. The panic episode serves a series of compromise formations in dealing with these conflicted wishes.

RESUMEN

Twenty-eight patients with erotomanic delusions were compared with 80 patients with other delusions to clarify questions about diagnosis and course of illness in erotomania. The erotomanic patients were a heterogeneous group with respect to both diagnosis and course. They had significantly more manic symptoms than the comparison group and more affective diagnoses than would be expected from the literature; 25% (N = 7) had schizoaffective disorder and 7% (N = 2) had bipolar disorder. A subgroup of monodelusional erotomanic patients was identified who met the DSM-III-R criteria for delusional disorder, thus supporting the decision to include erotomanic delusions in this diagnostic category in the revision of DSM-III.

RESUMEN

The authors compared delusional disorders in men and women and found that women have more frequent erotic and heterosexual delusions, more affective symptoms, and more interpersonal precipitants and that men have more delusions with a homosexual theme. Perhaps because of these differences in delusional content and affective symptoms, delusional women are more difficult to diagnose within the DSM-III nomenclature than are delusional men. The authors discuss these findings from psychodynamic, ethologic, and sociocultural perspectives and suggest ways of improving DSM-III to make it more representative of female patients.

RESUMEN

Research indicates that patients do not hold delusions with as fixed a certainty as has been believed. Confrontation with reality may have an important role in the evaluation and treatment of delusional patients. The authors suggest four factors that may help predict the value of reality confrontation in a given clinical situation: 1) how understandable the delusion is in the context of the patient's life, 2) the degree of conviction with which the patient holds the delusion, 3) the phase in development of the delusional beliefs, and 4) the diagnosis of the patient.

RESUMEN

The case of an acutely depressed 34 year old man with a history of systemic sarcoidosis is presented with the question of the psychiatric manifestations of sarcoidosis in mind. The literature on Central Nervous System Sarcoidosis is reviewed and the possibility that this condition may present with psychiatric symptomatology is raised. An emphasis is placed on maintaining a high index of suspicion regarding organic factors in cases such as this, particularly in the setting of a complex, multi-system disease such as sarcoidosis.

RESUMEN

Kirchner, Carl E. J. (Suffolk County Community College, Selden, N.Y.), and Matthew J. Rudden. Location of a mutator gene in Salmonella typhimurium by cotransduction. J. Bacteriol. 92:1453-1456. 1966.-The LT7 strain of Salmonella typhimurium has been shown to possess a mutator gene which is responsible for an increase in mutation frequency for most loci tested. Preliminary results suggested the gene might be responsible for the production of an abnormal purine or pyrimidine base. Phage prepared on the mutator strain were used to transduce selected purine and pyrimidine LT2 mutants that do not possess this gene. A high frequency (60%) of cotransduction was observed with mutants from only one locus, purA. Transduction of additional mutants from this region gave similar results, except for one mutant (purA1) which showed no transduction of the mutator gene or the purA1 region. The results show that the mutator gene is very closely linked to the purA locus and suggest that it might be part of it.
