BACKGROUND: Trihalomethanes (THM), a major class of disinfection by-products, are widespread and are associated with adverse health effects. We conducted a global evaluation of current THM regulations and concentrations in drinking water. METHODS: We included 120 countries (∼7000 million inhabitants in 2016), representing 94% of the world population. We searched for country regulations and THM routine monitoring data using a questionnaire addressed to referent contacts. Scientific and gray literature was reviewed where contacts were not identified or declined participation. We obtained or estimated annual average THM concentrations, weighted to the population served when possible. RESULTS: Drinking water regulations were ascertained for 116/120 (97%) countries, with 89/116 (77%) including THM regulations. Routine monitoring was implemented in 47/89 (53%) of countries with THM regulations. THM data with a varying population coverage was obtained for 69/120 (58%) countries consisting of ∼5600 million inhabitants (76% of world's population in 2016). Population coverage was ≥90% in 14 countries, mostly in the Global North, 50-89% in 19 countries, 11-49% among 21 countries, and ≤10% in 14 countries including India, China, Russian Federation and Nigeria (40% of world's population). DISCUSSION: An enormous gap exists in THM regulatory status, routine monitoring practice, reporting and data availability among countries, especially between high- vs. low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). More efforts are warranted to regulate and systematically assess chemical quality of drinking water, centralize, harmonize, and openly report data, particularly in LMICs.

Water quality surveillance systems are hardly applied in rural contexts. To provide a comprehensive analysis of drinking-water quality in two rural settlements in the Colombian Caribbean drinking-water samples were collected and analyzed from storage containers in 42 homes. The results of physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses of the water samples were compared with values established by the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality, and Colombian regulations. The Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to compare each parameter for supply source, season (rainy or dry), settlement, and types of storage. Drinking-water Quality Risk Index (IRCA) was calculated for each of the samples. The water supply sources were varied: well (33.3%), rainwater (23.8%), artificial pond (23.8%), and river (19.0%). One-hundred percent of the samples contained Escherichia coli and total coliforms. The IRCA varied between 57.3 and 83.9, with a median of 72.9. Eighty-eight percent of the samples exhibited high risk levels (35.1 < IRCA < 80.0) and 12% were unsanitary (80.1 < IRCA < 100.0). Artificial pond water was the source of supply with the worst IRCA (83.79). Drinking water in the El Cascajo and La Delfina settlements does not meet international and national drinking-water standards. A change is required whereby monitoring and quality control policies take into account the reality of rural settings.

In many countries water disinfection for human consumption is still carried out via chlorination which generates by-products such as trihalomethanes (THM). Exposure to THM constitutes a public health risk as such substances are known to be carcinogenic. This study evaluated exposure to THMs by inhalation in showers and assessed the carcinogenic risk for lifetime exposure. The study population involved students at Universidad de los Andes residing in Bogotá, Colombia. The risk assessment was performed stochastically and the exposure parameters were taken as probability distributions. Most variables were measured in relation to the chosen population. The risk was calculated using two different methodologies but no significant variations were obtained. The average risk calculated for men and women was 56 cases in a million (5.6 × 10-5). A sensitivity analysis was carried out where it was found that the parameters that increase risk the most are the concentration of chloroform in the water, exposure time, and the volume of the shower cubicle.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) have demonstrated an excellent capability to treat domestic wastewater. However, biofouling reduces membrane permeability, increasing operational costs and overall energy demand. Soluble microbial products (SMPs) that build up on the membrane surface play a significant role in the biofouling. In this study, the production of SMPs in a 32 L submerged AnMBR operated at three different organic loads (3.0, 4.1 and 1.2 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m3d for phases 1, 2 and 3, respectively) during long-term operation of the reactor (144, 83 and 94 days) were evaluated. The samples were taken from both the permeate and the sludge at three different heights (0.14, 0.44 and 0.75 m). Higher production of SMPs was obtained in phase 2, which was proportional to the membrane fouling. There were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) in the SMPs extracted from sludge at different heights among the three phases. In the permeate of phases 1, 2 and 3, the membrane allowed the removal of 56%, 70% and 64% of the SMP concentration in the sludge. SMPs were characterized by molecular weight (MW). A bimodal behavior was obtained, where fractions prevailed with an MW < 1 kDa, associated with SMPs as utilization-associated products (UAPs) caused fouling by the pore-blocking mechanism. The chemical analysis found that, in the SMPs, the unknown COD predominated over the known COD, such as carbohydrates and proteins. These results suggest that further studies in SMP characterization should focus on the unknown COD fraction to understand the membrane fouling in AnMBR systems better.

Coffee mucilage (CM), a novel substrate produced as waste from agricultural activity in Colombia, the largest fourth coffee producer in the world, was used for hydrogen production. The study evaluated three ratios (C1-3) for co-digestion of CM and swine manure (SM), and an increase in organic load to improve hydrogen production (C4). The hydrogen production was improved by a C/N ratio of 53.4 used in C2 and C4. The average hydrogen production rate in C4 was 7.6 NL H2/LCMd, which indicates a high hydrogen potential compare to substrates such as POME and wheat starch. In this condition, the biogas composition was 0.1%, 50.6% and 39.0% of methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen, respectively. The butyric and acetic fermentation pathways were the main routes identified during hydrogen production which kept a Bu/Ac ratio at around 1.0. A direct relationship between coffee mucilage, biogas and cumulative hydrogen volume was established.
