This condition exponentially increases health risks and it is associated with prema ture mortality. Since 2008, several guidelines on pediatric obesity treatment have included bariatric surgery as a treatment strategy for certain severely obese adolescents. Recent evidence shows that, when done in specialized centers, the re sults would be similar in adolescents in the short and medium term. Nonetheless, in this group of pa tients, bariatric surgery has risks related to their stage of development, and data on long-term results and complications are still lacking. Therefore, to achieve the expected results, the patient selection, surgery, and follow-up must be carried out by qualified multidisciplinary teams, in hospitals centers that have the appropriate infrastructure, It is essential for the patients a life-long adherence to medi cal and nutritional monitoring. The objective of this document is to present the position statement of the Nutrition Branch of the Chilean Society of Pediatrics on the different issues to be considered for the adequate indication of these procedures in severely obese adolescents.

SETTING: There remains a lack of effective and inexpensive diagnostic tools for active tuberculosis (TB) disease. Testing immune responses to proteins secreted by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, such as MPT64, may be a diagnostic option. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of a patch test using MPT64 for the diagnosis of active TB disease. DESIGN: This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospective study in Lima, Peru, involved 55 healthy controls and 457 symptomatic individuals referred for routine TB testing by the National TB Control Programme. All subjects underwent a comprehensive diagnostic workup, and received an active patch on one arm and a placebo patch on the opposite arm, which were read after 4 days. RESULTS: Eighty-one (18%) of the symptomatic participants were classified as having definite TB, while an additional 98 (21%) had probable TB. The patch tests performed the same in both groups, with a sensitivity of 27% and specificity of 74%. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.495 (95%CI 0.425-0.565). CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to existing literature, the MPT64 patch was not sensitive and specific to detect active TB. Given the potential of the test, understanding possible differences in the protein source or underlying genetic factors should be explored further.

A set of experiments were conducted in Brazil in a pilot-scale waste stabilization pond (WSP) system (a four-maturation-pond series) treating an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor effluent. Over a year and a half the pond series was monitored under two flow rate conditions, hence also different hydraulic retention times and surface loading rates. On-site and laboratory trials were carried out to assess: (i) ammonia losses by volatilization using acrylic capture chambers placed at the surface of the ponds; (ii) organic nitrogen sedimentation rates using metal buckets placed at the bottom of the ponds for collecting settled particulate matter; (iii) nitrogen removal by algal uptake based on the nitrogen content of the suspended particulate matter in samples from the ponds' water column. In addition, nitrification and denitrification rates were measured in laboratory-based experiments using pond water and sediment samples. The pond system achieved high nitrogen removal (69% total nitrogen and 92% ammonia removal). The average total nitrogen removal rates varied from 10,098 to 3,849 g N/ha·d in the first and the last ponds, respectively, with the following fractions associated with the various removal pathways: (i) 23.5-45.6% sedimentation of organic nitrogen; (ii) 13.1-27.8% algal uptake; (iii) 1.2-3.1% ammonia volatilization; and (iv) 0.15-0.34% nitrification-denitrification.

We analyze ground state (GS) factorization in general arrays of spins s_{i} with XXZ couplings immersed in nonuniform fields. It is shown that an exceptionally degenerate set of completely separable symmetry-breaking GSs can arise for a wide range of field configurations, at a quantum critical point where all GS magnetization plateaus merge. Such configurations include alternating fields as well as zero-bulk field solutions with edge fields only and intermediate solutions with zero field at specific sites, valid for d-dimensional arrays. The definite magnetization-projected GSs at factorization can be analytically determined and depend only on the exchange anisotropies, exhibiting critical entanglement properties. We also show that some factorization-compatible field configurations may result in field-induced frustration and nontrivial behavior at strong fields.
RESUMEN
Food technologists are always looking to improve the functional properties of proteins. In this sense, in last years ultrasound has been used to improve some functional properties. For this reason, and considering that jumbo squid is an important fishery in northwest Mexico, the purpose of this research was to determine the effect of pulsed ultrasound on the physicochemical characteristics and emulsifying properties of squid (Dosidicus gigas) mantle proteins. Pulsed ultrasound (20kHz, 20, and 40% amplitude) was applied for 30, 60, and 90s to a protein extract prepared from giant squid mantle causing an increase (p<0.05) in surface hydrophobicity (So) from 108.4±1.4 to 239.1±2.4 after application of pulsed ultrasound at 40% of amplitude for 90s. The electrophoretic profile and the total and reactive sulfhydryl contents were not affected (p⩾0.05) by the ultrasound treatment. The emulsifying ability of the protein solution was improved (p<0.05), whereas the Emulsifier Activity Index (EAI) varied from123.67±5.52m2/g for the control and increased up to 217.7±3.8m2/g after application of the ultrasound. The Stability Emulsifier Index (EEI) was improved at 40% of amplitude by 60 and 90s. The results suggested that pulsed ultrasound used as pretreatment induced conformational changes in giant squid proteins, which improved the interfacial association between protein-oil phases, thus contributing to the improvement of their emulsifient properties.

In recent years, high-energy ultrasound has been used as an alternative to improve the functional properties of various proteins, such as from milk, eggs, soy and poultry. The benefits of implementing this technology depend on the inherent characteristics of the protein source and the intensity and amplitude of the ultrasound, as well as on the pH, temperature, ionic strength, time, and all of the variables that have an effect on the physicochemical properties of proteins. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the optimal conditions for each type of food. The use of ultrasound is a promising technique in food technology with a low impact on the environment, and it has thus become known as a green technology. Therefore, this review focuses on the application of high-energy ultrasound to food; its effects on the functional properties of proteins; and how different conditions such as the frequency, time, amplitude, temperature, and protein concentration affect the functional properties.

INTRODUCTION: Certain strains of Cronobacter sakazakii can cause serious invasive infections in children, mainly those <2 months old and fed with powdered infant formula (PIF). The infectious dose of C. sakazakii is unknown but evidence suggests that it is approximately 1000 colony forming units (CFU). PIF is currently considered safe if its end-product C. sakazakii level is <1 CFU/g. In this study, we determined the lag time, generation time (GT), and growth rate of five pooled C. sakazakii isolates to evaluate the factors affecting contamination levels in reconstituted PIF. METHODS: 1.71 log CFU/ml of C. sakazakii were inoculated into 100 and 3000 ml of reconstituted PIF and incubated at 22 and 35°C. Growth was evaluated over a 24-h period. ComBase was used for modeling. RESULTS: In 3000 ml, the growth rate was 0.45 ± 0.02 log CFU/h with a lag phase of 3 ± 0.05 h and GT of 0.67 h at 22°C, while the growth rate was 0.73 ± 0.01 log CFU/h with a lag phase of 0.45 ± 0.03 h and GT of 0.41 h at 35° C. CONCLUSION: Cronobacter sakazakii grows rapidly in reconstituted PIF, especially at 35° C.
RESUMEN
Extracting characteristics and information from Auditory Evoked Potentials recordings (AEPs) involves difficulties due to their very low amplitude, which makes the AEPs easily hidden by artifacts from physiological or external sources like the EEG/EMG, blinking, and line-noise. To tackle this problem, some authors have used Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to successfully de-noise brain signals. However, since interest has been mainly focused on removing artifacts like blinking, not much attention has been paid to the quality of the recovered evoked potential. This is the AEP case, where literature reports interesting results on the de-noising matter, but without an objective evaluation of the AEP finally extracted (and the influence of different implementations or configurations of ICA). Here, to study the performance of three popular ICA algorithms (FastICA, Ext-Infomax, and SOBI) at separating AEPs from a mixture, a synthetic dataset composed of one Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potential (LLAEP) signal and the most frequent artifacts was generated. Next, the quality of the independent components (ICs) estimated by such algorithms was measured by using the AMARI performance index (Am), the signal interference ratio index (SIR), and the time required to achieve separation. Results indicated that the FastICA implementation, with the symmetric approach and the power cubic contrast function, is more likely to provide the best and faster separation of the LLAEP, which makes it suitable for this purpose.
A large database from an experimental maturation pond system in Brazil was used to verify the agreement of field results with values predicted by some of the most widely accepted models to describe ammonium and total nitrogen (TN) removal in facultative and maturation ponds. The same database was used to derive a pH-independent linear model to predict ammonium removal in ponds, which was proved to be, essentially, a function of ammonium surface loading rate. In general, all these models made reasonable predictions of ammonium or TN removal but tended to overestimate low ammonium effluent concentrations while underestimating higher values of field data.

background: Lactic acid (LA) is a carboxylic acid widely used as preservative, acidulant, and/or flavouring in food industry; it is also used as a raw material for the production of lactate ester, propylene glycol, 2,3-pentanedione, propanoic acid, acrylic acid and acetaldehyde. In recent years, the demand for LA production has dramatically increased due to its application as a monomer for poly-lactic acid synthesis, a biodegradable polymer used as a plastic in many industrial applications. LA can be produced either by fermentation or chemical synthesis; the former route has received considerable interest, due to environmental concerns and the limited nature of petrochemical feedstocks; thus, 90% of LA produced worldwide is obtained by fermentation, this process comprises the bioconversion of a sugar solution (carbohydrates) into LA in the presence of a microorganism. Objectives: This work is aimed at studying the effect of pH control and culture media composition on the LA production using renewable sources from the agroindustry sector. Methods: A Lactobacillus brevis strain is used to perform lab scale experiments under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, using three different culture media compositions: a high nutritional content medium (MRS), as a reference, a low nutritional content medium with glucose as the only carbon source (GM), and a potential low nutritional content medium with cassava flour as carbon source (HY1). results: The higher LA production is accomplished under anaerobic conditions, 17.6 ± 0.1, 12.6 ± 0.2 y 13.6 ± 0.2 g LA/L, for MRS, GM and HY1 medium, respectively. The effect of pH on LA biosynthesis in a 5L bioreactor is also studied using the HY1 medium. For a fermentation time of 120 h, the highest LA concentration obtained was 24.3 ± 0.7g LA/L, productivity 0.20 g/L/h, YP/S 0.32g LA/g syrup, at pH 6.5...

INTRODUCTION: Kartagener Syndrome is an autosomal recessive inherited disease characterized by dextrocardia, bronchiectasias, chronic sinusitis and infertility, caused by a mutation onchoromosome 5p, locus of dynein protein, component of respiratory cilia and reproductive system, resulting in low mucociliar clearance and primary discinesia. The prevalence is 1:10,000. The clinical diagnosis is confirmed by examination of ciliary structure and function. CASE REPORT: Male patient, 35 years old with a history of Kartagener Syndrome in treatment consults in July at Lirquen Hospital for pain in the left breast area, radiating to infrascapular region of the same side, lancing, intensity 7/10, insidious onset and three days duration, accompanied by feeling feverish, diaphoresis, and productive wet cough. Physical exam: situs inversus in the thorax and abdomen. Pulmonary exam: bilateral crepitus intensified in left base, diffuse rales and rhonchi in both bases; Limbs exam: clubbing. Through chest radiograph was diagnosed with pneumonia. Is hospitalized in Men Medicine Service for intravenous ceftriaxone management, inmunosuppresants, and monitoring. The patient has good response to treatment, so it is discharged to continue with oral antibiotics at home. DISCUSSION: The immotile ciliar diseases affect the respiratory tract and sperm of these patients. It helps to know the diagnosis because it will allow search and efficiently treat complications, besides helping the patient in the psychological consequences of infertility. Spirometry is necessary and chest radiography is warranted in this case for evaluation and study of the infectious respiratory disease that the patient debut.

This paper presents the results of five years monitoring of an experimental wastewater treatment plant in southeast Brazil, comprised of a UASB reactor followed by a submerged aerated biofilter (BF) (field scale) and shallow polishing ponds (pilot scale). Three ponds in series achieved high quality effluent standards in terms of ammonia and E.coli, but a fourth pond did not result in further efficiency. Well established models to predict ammonia and E.coli removal in facultative and/or maturation ponds were, in a way, validated for polishing ponds too. The paper also includes results of input design parameters, such as pH and E.coli die-off rate constants, and their variation along the pond series.

Justicia pectoralis (Acanthaceae) is used as an antiinflammatory, antimicrobial and bronchodilator, and its extract exerts an anxiolytic-like effect profile in animal models. This work presents the behavioral effects of an aqueous standardized extract of Justicia pectoralis (SEJP) in animal models, such as the elevated plus maze (EPM), light/dark, open field, rota rod and pentobarbital sleep time. The extract was administered intragastrically to male mice at single doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, while diazepam 1 or 2 mg/kg was used as a standard drug and flumazenil 2.5 mg/kg was used to evaluate the participation of benzodiazepinic receptors. The results showed that, similar to diazepam (1 mg/kg), SEJP significantly modified all the observed parameters in the EPM test, without altering the general motor activity in the open field, rota rod and pentobarbital sleep time tests. Flumazenil reversed not only the diazepam effect but also the SEJP effect. In the same way, all doses of SEJP increased the time of permanence in the light box in the light/dark test. The results showed that SEJP presented an anxiolytic-like effect, disproving sedative effects.
