RESUMEN

Octocorals are showing resilience to local and global stressors, while the decline in zooxanthellate corals continues. One of the processes that helps explain this ecological succession is the vertical growth of octocorals, which allows colonies to avoid stressors occurring at the substrate level. However, the growth and survival of octocorals could be affected by eutrophication, similar to what has happened with zooxanthellate corals. For this reason, the growth rate, mortality and survival of two octocoral species were determined along a eutrophication gradient in Cuba. A permanent band transect (250 × 2 m) was established on seven frontal reefs, and marked colonies were monitored for one year. The growth rates in height, width and colony area of Eunicea flexuosa and Plexaura kükenthali were significantly greater in the reefs near the polluted river basins. The eutrophication gradient, water visibility, and sediment accumulation on the bottom explained 36-78% of the variability in the growth of both species. The positive and significant correlations between the growth rate and stable nitrogen isotopes in both species and the microbiological variables, suggest that the contributions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and organic matter from sewage discharge favor the growth of colonies. The eutrophication gradient did not explain the variability in mortality of either species in the short term, while hydrodynamic stress did. The results of this research highlight the resilience of both species and their ability to grow more rapidly in areas with eutrophic conditions, low water visibility, and greater sediment accumulation on the bottom, which may help explain the abundance of octocorals in the western tropical Atlantic.

Octocoral abundance is increasing on Caribbean reefs, and one of the possible causes is their vertical morphological plasticity that allows them to grow above the substrate to reduce the effect of processes that occur in it (e.g., scour by sediments) as well as adapt to environmental gradients. The aim of this study was to determine the morphometric response of two octocorals species (Eunicea flexuosa and Plexaura kükenthali) with different life strategies in a water quality gradient. The research was carried out between 2008 and 2016 on eight forereefs of northwest Cuba. Different morphometric indicators were measured in the colonies of both species found within a belt transect (100 x 2 m) randomly located at each site. The lowest means in height, diameter, number of terminal branches/colony, cover index, and least arborescent colonies of E. flexuosa were detected at the sites with the greatest anthropogenic pollution. The water quality gradient did not explain the variability of the five morphometric indicators of P. kükenthali. However, hydrodynamic stress was the factor that most negatively affected the morphometry of this species. The chronic effect of poor water quality over time resulted in more small sized colonies of E. flexuosa at the polluted site, probably due to higher mortality. The size distribution of P. kükenthali also showed the same trend but at the sites with greater hydrodynamic stress. These results show that the morphometric response of octocorals along a water quality gradient is species-specific. This study suggests that poor water quality decreases the size and thus availability of habitat provided by octocorals sensitive to that factor (e.g., E. flexuosa) while other tolerant species (e.g., P. kükenthali) could provide the habitat of several organisms in a scenario of increasing anthropogenic pollution.

The conservation of Mexican Caribbean Ecosystems (MCE) involves ensuring their capacity to provide resources and ecosystem services to society. Monitoring programs are necessary to establish their management and ensure their sustainability. Thalassia testudinum is the community used to determine anthropogenic influence, in which wastewater is the primary anthropogenic nitrogen source. The extensive amount of pelagic sargassum that enters the area and its decomposition may be additional nitrogen sources in MCE. In the present study, the δ15N in T. testudinum was examined from 2009 to 2019 to infer the nitrogen contribution from pelagic sargassum to MCE. T. testudinum δ15N values showed significant depletion from June/October 2014 to 2019 concerning previous periods. Pelagic sargassum was an alternative nitrogen source, and its leaching reduced T. testudinum δ15N values in MCE.

The resident and tourist population in the Mexican Caribbean has grown exponentially, increasing the availability of dissolved inorganic nutrients in coastal waters through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Recently, a new massive drift of Sargassum spp. has occurred that can provide new organic matter and enrich coastal water with nutrients. In different sites in the Mexican Caribbean, the chemical composition of the water was analyzed, and the δ15N of Thalassia testudinum was determined between 2016 and 2019. Evidence of SGD was observed in Akumal Bay due to high silicate concentrations and its negative correlation with salinity. Seasonal and interannual variation in NH4+ concentration was observed at these sites. In October 2018, SGD contributed ∼70 times more nitrogen and ∼194 times more phosphorus than the decomposition of the pelagic macroalgae Sargassum spp. The δ15N data showed that Akumal Bay received nitrogen of anthropogenic origin and that nitrogen fixation processes or probably assimilation of nitrogen of the leachates of pelagic Sargassum spp were dominant at Mahahual and Xahuayxol.

Eutrophication is one of the causes of the degradation of reefs worldwide. The aim of this research is to determine if sewage discharge reaches the fore reefs at northwest of Cuba using δ15N in tissues of the octocorals Eunicea flexuosa and Plexaura kuekenthali and the concentration of microbiological and physical-chemical variables. Thirteen reefs at 10-m depth were selected near river basins and far from the urban and industrial development of Havana City. Branch tips of both species were collected, the concentrations of nutrient and microorganisms in water samples were quantified, and horizontal visibility in the water (Vis) was determined. Overall, δ15N of E. flexuosa ranged from 1.5 to 6.3‰ and P. kuekenthali from 1.7 to 6.7‰. The tissue of both species was significantly enriched in 15N in reefs near polluted watersheds compared with reefs far from pollution by anthropogenic activities. The δ15N of both species showed a positive and significant correlation with the concentration of fecal and total coliform bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, and NH4+ and a negative and significant correlation with the Vis. The δ15N of the two species and microbiological and physical-chemical variables evidenced water quality decline by sewage discharge that reached reefs near polluted watersheds.

Population growth around water bodies is deteriorating environmental quality. The benthic foraminiferal and trace element concentration in a pair of short sediment cores were used to establish the quality of the sedimentary environment in a tropical coastal lagoon in the southwestern Gulf of California. From 25 cm depth towards the surface of the sediment core, Ammonia beccarii was dominant over nontolerant species and the concentrations of V, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, Hg and Pb in the sediments increased compared with the lower depth intervals. This finding suggests a deterioration in the environmental quality of the lagoon since 1980, associated with an increase in the sizes of the population and vehicle fleet in the city of La Paz, Baja California Sur, and with the operation of three fossil fuel-based thermoelectric plants since 1985.

This dataset accompanies "Spatio temporal variation in octocoral assemblages along a water quality gradient in the northwestern region of Cuba" [1]. Sampling units were quadrats of 1 m2 (each 1 x 1 m), positioned by a random-systematic design at 10 m depth on the rocky-coral substrate. The number of colonies of octocoral species in thirteen fore reefs was counted to determine the composition, richness and abundance (expressed as density) of octocorals for the period from 2008-2015. Density of six species that most influenced spatial variation of octocoral assemblage structure was compared [1]. Species richness of octocorals was determined in each reef and for the 2008-2015 period. The accumulated species richness was calculated based on 100 randomizations without replacement. This dataset can be used in meta-analysis studies on spatial variations of the structure of octocoral assemblages related to anthropogenic activities and climate variability in the Caribbean Sea, as well as, experimental studies on thresholds to specific pollutants.

Rivers are the main sources of nutrients to coastal zones. Therefore, the effects of water quality degradation on octocoral assemblages and their relationship with microbiological and physical-chemical variables were determined in reefs close to river basins in the northwestern region of Cuba. The evaluations were carried out in 1 m2 frames at a depth of 10 m in 13 fore reefs. The highest concentrations of the microbiological variables and hydrochemicals and the lowest horizontal visibility in the water column were detected in the reefs near the river basins. The lowest richness, diversity and octocoral density were related to higher concentrations of fecal coliform, total coliform and fecal streptococcal bacteria, sediment accumulation on the bottom and lower visibility. The structure of the octocoral assemblages varied significantly between reefs due to fecal organic pollution. Water quality deterioration in the reefs near the river basins has negatively affected the octocoral assemblages.

Abstract Wave exposure can influence community structure and distribution of shallow coral reefs, by affecting organisms both directly and indirectly. To assess the current stony coral community condition under different degrees of wave exposure at a marine protected area of the Gulf of Cazones (SW Cuba), two expeditions were carried out in May 2010 and June 2012. Four sampling sites were sampled at reef crests (1.5 m deep), and twelve at fore-reefs, at 10, 15 and 20 m deep in four geographic locations. Live coral cover, species richness and composition, colony density, and maximum diameter were assessed using the AGRRA 2001 methodology. Multivariate and non-parametric statistics were applied to compare sites. The coral community structure within reef crests was not homogenous. The observed variability of indicators apparently was determined by great coral mortality events resulting from natural disturbances that occurred in the past (hurricanes, bleaching and diseases). Forereef coral communities displayed better condition and lower coral mortality than reef crests. Species richness and coral composition varied, while multivariate and statistical methods did not reveal site grouping with regard to wave exposure. The remaining biological condition indicators were similar among sites, except in the most exposed one, where coral cover and coral size were slightly lower. ResumenEl oleaje es una perturbación natural que puede inferir en la estructura y condición de los arrecifes de coral someros, afectando los organismos directa e indirectamente. Para evaluar la condición de comunidades de corales con diferente exposición al oleaje, se realizaron dos expediciones al Área Marina Protegida del Golfo de Cazones durante mayo 2010 y junio 2012. Se escogieron cuatro arrecifes (localidades) ubicados en posiciones diferentes del golfo. Se ubicaron cuatro sitios en la zona de cresta (1.5 m de profundidad) y 12 en la zona de arrecife frontal (en cuatro localidades a 10, 15 y 20 m de profundidad) donde se replicaron transectos lineales (10 m de largo) de muestreo. Se evaluó la cobertura de coral vivo, riqueza y composición por especies, densidad y diámetro máximo de las colonias mediante la metodología AGRRA 2001. Para la comparación entre sitios se aplicaron métodos evaluativos multivariados y análisis estadísticos no paramétricos. La estructura y condición de la comunidad de corales en las crestas fue distinta pero la variabilidad observada parece responder a grandes eventos de mortalidad producto de huracanes, blanqueamientos y enfermedades del pasado. La condición de los arrecifes frontales fue más favorable observándose menor mortalidad coralina. La riqueza y composición por especies fue variable y los métodos estadísticos y multivariados no definieron grupos de sitios con similitud respecto a la exposición al oleaje. Los demás indicadores biológicos de condición fueron parecidos entre sitios, excepto en el más expuesto al oleaje, donde la cobertura y la talla de los corales fueron ligeramente inferiores. En general, la diferente influencia del oleaje dentro del golfo de Cazones, parece no afectar significativamente la estructura y condición de las comunidades coralinas.
