RESUMEN

Adipose tissue is a complex and heterogenic tissue exhibiting high variability and appears to have multiple functions, especially in metabolic regulation. Change in carbohydrate source is reported to have a profound effect in the regular functioning of adipocytes. Here, we analyzed the role of two monosaccharides namely, glucose (5.2 and 25 nM), galactose (25 mM), and two disaccharides namely, lactose and sucrose (both at 25 mM) in the adipocyte differentiation process and its utilization by adipocytes as an energy source. The change in cell morphology, adipocyte-specific gene expression, and protein levels were analyzed at three different time points: 2, 6, and 48 hr. Oil Red O staining at Day 8 of differentiation showed that no other carbohydrates were able to increase lipid content as better as 25 mM glucose. Gene expression pattern was altered by the change in glucose concentration and sucrose was able to mimic the effect of glucose even though, the lipid synthesis was solely promoted by high glucose levels. Galactose and lactose did not show any effect in promoting adipocyte differentiation. The expression of PPAR γ was high in the presence of sucrose and galactose, possibly of adipogenic cocktail in enhancing the expression rather than the effect of carbohydrate. Acarbose, a potent glucosidase inhibitor was able to inhibit the lipid content in adipocytes grown with sucrose as a carbohydrate source and shows the possibility of its direct utilization. Lactate production by cells upon differentiation also proved the possible uptake of glucose after sucrose cleavage.

RESUMEN

Trauma and infection to immature teeth can result in a number of complications. Discontinuity in the formation of root is one such complication which has never been documented before. In the following article, a case report of this aberrancy which was observed in the root of a permanent central incisor, subsequent to a traumatic injury is discussed. In spite of this discontinuity, complete root formation and vital pulp were noted in the tooth. Since such a case has not been reported in literature till date, this complication is described and the possible cause of its occurrence is discussed in this article.

RESUMEN

In the present investigation, the effect of timolol maleate loaded ocuserts was studied as an alternative for conventional anti-glaucoma formulation. Ocuserts were prepared using natural polymer sodium alginate and ethyl cellulose. Physico-chemical properties along with drug entrapment efficiency (94-98%), content uniformity (93.1% ±â€¯0.264-98.00% ±â€¯0.321), in vitro drug release (83.42% ±â€¯0.35 at end of 12 h), ex vivo permeation all showed satisfactory results, which was found to follow zero order kinetics. Ex vivo permeation studies showed better results, revealed that the permeability coefficient was dependent on polymer type. The sterility test accelerated stability studies and in vivo studies such as eye irritancy test, in vivo drug release of the optimized ocusert was determined. The anti-glaucoma activity was measured using Schiotz tonometer at different time interval. Significant reduction in Intra ocular pressure (IOP) within 3 days was observed in case of rabbits treated with ocusert in comparison to the rabbit treated with marketed eye drop formulation. Hence timolol maleate loaded ocuserts proved to be a promising and viable alternative over conventional eye formulation for the sustained and controlled ophthalmic drug delivery, targeting the drug within the ocular globe thus improving patient compliance for the treatment of glaucoma.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to compare and evaluate the relative efficacy of enamel microabrasion (using 18% HCl) and bleaching with McInnes solution in the esthetic improvement of fluorosed teeth and to check postoperative sensitivity. STUDY DESIGN: 30 children aged between 9-14yrs with a mild or moderate grade of fluorosis as classified according to Dean's fluorosis index and who complained of objectionable esthetics were selected. Split mouth study design was selected in our study. Each subject had one of their maxillary central incisor randomly selected for Enamel microabrasion and the contra lateral maxillary central incisor for McInnes bleaching. Esthetic improvement was assessed by comparing the pre and postoperative digital photographs. During the evaluation session, the pre and postoperative photographs of 30 subjects were incorporated into a power point presentation and were projected side by side in a darkened room. Four calibrated and blinded examiners, including a layman rated the photographs under standardized viewing conditions. Esthetic improvement was assessed for both short and long term improvement. The postoperative sensitivity was recorded for both the procedures immediately after treatment and at one, three and six months interval. RESULTS: The results proved that both immediate and long term (6 month) esthetic improvement achieved by McInnes bleaching were superior to enamel microabrasion. There is a reduction in aesthetics of teeth in both the procedures after six months, which was very minimal in McInnes procedure and significant in enamel micro abrasion. Postoperative sensitivity in both techniques were negligible. The sensitivity observed were transient and subsided within an one-month post operatively. None of the subjects reported sensitivity at one, three and six months intervals. CONCLUSION: McInnes bleaching is a better procedure compared to enamel microabrasion in improving the appearance of fluorosed teeth. Both techniques are conservative and safe.

RESUMEN

Vocal cord nodules are benign neoplastic lesions which occur due to submucosal oedema and haemorrhage, leading to fibrosis and hyalinization. Calcification in vocal cord nodules has not been reported so far in literature. It is thought to be a laryngeal counterpart of idiopathic calcinosis cutis. Here, we are reporting a case of a 38-year-old male patient who presented with a change in voice, which had a duration of one month. Laryngoscopic examination revealed a globular, yellowish white, sessile mass which arose from anterior commissure region of right vocal cord. Micro laryngeal excision was done. Histopathological examination was suggestive of a calcified nodule in vocal cord.

RESUMEN

Secondary lymphangiomas or acquired lymphangiomas of vulva represent dilatation of upper dermal lymphatics following damage to previously normal deep lymphatics. They have been reported to occur following various infections, surgeries and radiotherapy which can cause damage to deep lymphatics.Treatment options in the management of secondary lymphangiomas include surgical resection, carbon dioxide laser vaporisation, sclerosing agents etc. We report two cases of secondary lymphangioma of vulva that followed radiotherapy for carcinoma of cervix. Both the patients were treated successfully by surgery.

RESUMEN

Tooth transplantation has attracted great interests since ancient times. A successful case of tooth allotransplantation is presented. A mandibular first premolar from the donor was implanted into the socket of maxillary central incisor Follow up after 12 months indicated good periapical healing with no resorption. Clinically, the transplantation site was free of symptoms and there was no evidence of periodontal disease or tooth mobility. This article suggests tooth transplantation as an alternative to other restorative options.

RESUMEN

Trauma to the deciduous teeth may have severe consequences. Pulp necrosis is the commonly observed sequel in traumatized primary teeth and is one of the possible etiologic factors for the development of dentigerous cyst. Dentigerous cyst is more commonly seen in mandibular third molar and maxillary canine region and is rarely associated with other teeth. This article addresses a case of dentigerous cyst associated with the germ of upper permanent central incisor, an uncommon site of occurrence, which was impacted, dislodged from its natural site of eruption after trauma to the predecessor incisor.
