RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of three root-end filling materials (MTAA-MTA Angelus, MTAS-experimental MTA Sealer, and ZOE- zinc oxide and eugenol cement) in retrograde preparations performed with different ultrasonic tips (CVD, Trinity, and Satelec). MATERIALS AND METHOD: Ninety 2-mm root sections from single-rooted human teeth were used. The retrograde cavities were prepared by using the ultrasonic tips, coupled to a device for position standardization. The specimens were randomly divided into nine groups: CVD MTAA; CVD MTAS; CVD ZOE; Trinity MTAA; Trinity MTAS; Trinity ZOE; Satelec MTAA; Satelec MTAS; Satelec ZOE. Each resin disc/dentin/root-end filling material was placed in the machine to perform the push-out test. The specimens were examined in a stereomicroscope to evaluate the type of failure. Data were submitted to statistical analysis using ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The highest bond strength was observed for the CVD tip irrespective of the material used (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference for the Trinity TU-18 diamond and S12 Satelec tips (P > 0.05). MTAA and MTAS showed highest bond strength. The most common type of failure was adhesion between the filling material and dentin wall, except for ZOE, where mixed failure was predominant. CONCLUSIONS: The CVD tip favored higher bond strength of the root-end filling materials. MTA Angelus and experimental MTAS presented bond strength to dentin prepared with ultrasonic tips. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Root-end preparation with the CVD tip positively influences the bond strength of root-end filling materials. MTA Angelus and experimental MTAS present bond strength to be used as root-end filling materials.

Introduction: Lateral condensation effectiveness may be influenced by the gutta-percha and finger spreader taper used during root canal obturation. Objective: To evaluate the penetration ability of finger spreader into simulated root canals prepared using MTwo rotary system and filled with different gutta-percha and finger spreader tapers. Material and methods: Resin blocks with curved root canals had the apical diameter enlarged up to #25.06 and distributed into groups (n = 6) according to the gutta-percha taper (#25.02, #25.04, and #25.06) and the finger spreader (#30 and #35 NiTi, and stainless steel B) used to perform cold lateral condensation. After applying a load of 1.5 Kg over the finger spreaders' head, the distance between the finger spread tip and the apical limit of the root canal preparation were obtained. The data were submitted to Anova and Tukey-Krammer's test, with 5% of significance. Results: The gutta-percha cones with 0.02 taper enabled higher finger spreader penetration when compared to 0.04 and 0.06 tapers (p < 0.05), which were similar between each other (p > 0.05), regardless of the type and diameter of the finger spreader used. When different finger spreaders were compared among themselves, stainless steel B showed higher penetration ability (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that the stainless-steel finger spreaders showed superior penetration ability and gutta-percha with lower tapers enabled a more effective lateral condensation at the apical third.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the surface roughness of IPS Empress 2 ceramic when treated with different finishing/polishing protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen specimens of IPS Empress 2 ceramic were made from wax patterns obtained using a stainless steel split mold. The specimens were glazed (Stage 0-S0, control) and divided into two groups. The specimens in Group 1 (G1) were finished/polished with a KG Sorensen diamond point (S1), followed by KG Sorensen siliconized points (S2) and final polishing with diamond polish paste (S3). In Group 2 (G2), the specimens were finished/polished using a Shofu diamond point (S1), as well as Shofu siliconized points (S2) and final polishing was performed using Porcelize paste (S3). After glazing (S0) and following each polishing procedure (S1, S2 or S3), the surface roughness was measured using TALYSURF Series 2. The average surface roughness results were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Tukey post-hoc tests (α = 0.01) RESULTS: All of the polishing procedures yielded higher surface roughness values when compared to the control group (S0). S3 yielded lower surface roughness values when compared to S1 and S2. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed treatments negatively affected the surface roughness of the glazed IPS Empress 2 ceramic.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the marginal sealing ability of six temporary restorative materials. Seventy-six human premolars were extracted and divided into six groups (n = 12); the remaining four teeth were used as a control group. Coronal access and biomechanical preparation were performed and the root canals were sealed. The external dental surfaces were covered and the coronal access cavities were filled with one of the six materials. At that point, the teeth were immersed in 0.2% Rhodamine B solution for 72 hours and subjected to thermal cycling. Samples were rinsed in running water and sectioned longitudinally; at that point, the images of each tooth were digitized and marginal leakage was measured using the Image Tool program. Data were subjected to statistical analysis by ANOVA and Tukey's test for comparison between experimental groups. All of the glass ionomer cements tested, particularly Maxxion R, offered satisfactory sealing ability as temporary restorative materials.
