RESUMEN

Alkali-extracted membrane material from hypotonically lysed Plasmodium berghei-infected mouse erythrocytes has been analyzed by dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fractionated by discontinuous sucrose gradient centrifugation. Components characteristic for the protein pattern associated with P. berghei infection have been recovered in the alkali-extracted material. Parasite components, free of host cell membrane contamination, have been obtained as a high-density fraction from sucrose gradients. This fraction is characterized by polypeptides with apparent molecular weight of 71,000 and 52,000.

RESUMEN

Culex quinquefasciatus strains of Liberian and Tanzanian origin were fed on Tanzanian donors with Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaraemias. 11 to 17 days later the mosquitoes were dissected and scored for the presence and numbers of immature and mature filarial larvae. In one experiment a significantly lower susceptibility was found in a Liberian compared with a Tanzanian strain, but in the other cases there was no significant difference. The susceptibility of the Liberian strains was higher than in published data on the same mosquito strains tested with Liberian W. bancrofti. It is doubtful whether the Liberian mosquito strains could be a useful source of genes for the construction of a refractory strain with which to replace an East African vector population.

RESUMEN

In this relatively iton deficient population both multiparous and primiparous pregnant women had similar serum iron levels. The mothers' levels had a linear correlation with the cord serum levels, but the lowest mean cord levels were above 100 mug./dl. maternal and cord blood haemoglobin levels, birthweights and placental weights showed no constant relation to the serum iron levels, and even in anaemic mothers the fetus was relatively non-asaemic with a haemoglobin level aroun 13 g./dl. In non-anaemic mothers the cord blood haemogloin rose rapidly and progressively.
