The iron reserves were assessed using Cook's formulas in 86 women in following trimesters of pregnancy and in the course of labour. The range of obtained iron reserves' levels was wide and amounted from -570 mg to 874 mg. The iron reserves' levels differed statistically in the groups of women with normal iron amount, with hypoferraemia and with sideropenic anaemia diagnosed on the basis of haematologic and iron indexes. Iron reserves insufficient for the maintenance of iron positive balance in organism were found in about 30% of examined gravidae.

For the analysis the relationship of the iron status of 86 pregnant women and size and composition body factors before and during pregnancy were made anthropometric, hematological and iron status indices. There were significant relations between pregestational body weight, height, body mass index and body weight, body composition in pregnancy and the values of iron status indicators in blood throughout gestation.

The triple examinations have taken in the course of gestation on 86 pregnant women living in Lódz. The determinations of HGB, HCT, RBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, SF, TIBC, SI, TS, ST, and EP in the venous blood were made between 8-14 hbt, 22-24 hbt, 32-35 hbt and at the first phase of the delivery. Among the examined women it was state the decrease of the value of hematological and iron indexes during the testified to the depletion of the reserved, transport and functional iron store in the organism of the pregnant women. The multiple criteria models were applied to diagnose the prevalence of different stages of iron deficiency with or without anemia in our pregnant women. For women in all trimesters of pregnancy the prevalence of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia was 38% in first and 54% in second half of pregnancy.

This communication was designed to determine the intake of food products and nutrients in randomly selected manual workers (women) of the textile industry, as well as to quantitatively evaluate the deficiency or excess of nutrients in their average diet. Daily nutrition was evaluated in 300 females, manual workers aged 35-44 years. Rheir nutrition was assessed by the method of a questionnaire concerning food intake during 24 h prior to the inquiry. As a result, the kind of nutrition was determined. Moreover, the nutritive value of the daily food rations, as well as the intake of the different groups of food products were calculated and compared with the recommended food standard B. The results indicate that: the observed unbalanced nutrition involving deficiencies of milk, vegetables, fruits and cereals may lead to e.g. disturbances in the acid-base equilibrium and to hypovitaminoses; the deficiency of magnesium and calcium creates the risk at the accelerating sclerotic changes; deficiencies of iron, zinc and cooper in the diet of women of reproductive age may result in the occurrence of anemia and exert an adverse effect on the offspring; on account of work in two or three shifts, it is indispensable to organize taking of meals during working hours.

Protein utilization was determined by assay with low-protein diets limiting in one of nine essential amino acids. The diets contained 50 g protein/kg and the amino acid score of the protein was 0.50. Protein utilization was found to be related to the particular limiting essential amino acids present. The usefulness of Bender's (1965) standard amino acid requirement for the estimation of amino acid utilization from a low-protein diet is discussed.

The past and presently diagnosed diseases (excluding vibration disease and occupational hearing impairment) were analysed in 1105 sawers operating combustion drive mechanic saws and in 295 controls. The greatest rate, both in the sawers and controls, was that of the diseases of respiratory tract, circulatory system and osseo -- articulo -- muscular system, nervous system and sense organs. These constituted 86% of all diseases that afflicted sawers and controls. No specific general morbidity accompanying vibration disease or occupational hearing impairment was found in the sawers exposed to noise and vibration.
