Introduction: In Panama, adolescent pregnancy is an important public health problem, more than because of its numbers, because of its biopsychosocial repercussions. Objective: To determine the motivations and reasons that lead an adolescent to become a mother. Methods: Descriptive study. The sample consisted of 204 adolescents. A structured interview-type questionnaire was used. Results: The mean age was 17.6 years. The 72.1% had a mother/sister with a history of adolescent pregnancy. The 57.4% attributed their pregnancy to lack of impulse control. 30.4% disclose that their pregnancy was wanted. 38.2% of these pregnancies correspond to feelings of invulnerability to pregnancy; 15.7% to low self-esteem.The reasons for pregnancy linked to contraceptives are as follows: 33.4% fear of using it; 25% lack of knowledge; 22.5% lack of money; 11.3% feelings of embarrassment when requesting it. Conclusions: Copying an intergenerational reproductive pattern was constituted as the main reason for pregnancy. The desire for motherhood to give meaning to life was one of the most frequently mentioned. Among unwanted pregnancies, more than half pointed to lack of impulse control.Family reasons, such as escaping from problems at home, were the least reported. (provided by Infomedic International)

M. hyorhinis is considered one of the etiological agents of arthritis in sucking pigs, but recently as seen, some strains can produce pneumonia that could not be distinguished from the mycoplasmosis caused by M. hyopneumoniae. The study was conducted to research the presence of Mycoplasma hyorhinis (M. hyorhinis ) in different regions of the country from exudates of pig lungs with typical EP lesions. Exudates from 280 pig lungs with typical EP lesions were studied using molecular techniques such as PCR, real time PCR and amplification of the 16S-23S rRNA. It was detected that the 66 percent of the samples studied resulted positive to M. hyorhinis, and the presence of this species was detected in all the provinces. Amplification and studies on the intergenic region 16S-23S of M. hyorhinis rRNA demonstrated the existing variability among strains of a same species. This study is the first report on M. hyorhinis detection in Cuba.

Objetives: Determine factors associated with adolescent pregnancies in the Hospital Santo Tomás, Panamá from 2001 to 2007. Material and methods: A retrospective and descriptive study of pregnancies attended during the years 2001 to 2007 that were recorded in the Perinatal Information System database. We compared pregnant adolescents with pregnant adults and their products. Adolescents were divided in two sub-groups, 10-14 years and 15-19 years, Analysis of the information was made using the Perinatal Information System version 1.4. Results: 91944 pregnancies were recorded, of which 21495 (23.38%) were adolescents, range from 10-14 years 785 (3.65%) and from 15-19 years 20710 (96.35%). Adolescent pregnant were found to receive less prenatal care before 20 weeks gestation, 10-14 year (48.07%) and 15-19 years (56.64%), than the control group (60.75%). Less percentage of abortions (10.72%) vs ( 12.84%), and less percentage of first time cesarean sections, 10-14 years (15.64%) and 15-19 years (13.81%) vs (17.87%). There was a increased risk for patients with 10-14 years for premature deliveries ( Measured by Last Menstrual Period) (22.03%) vs (14%) ad for Low Birth Weight (20.07%) vs (10.84%). Conclusions: Being an adolescent mother doesn't imply a higher risk for the mothers health or a higher risk for abortion and it has been demonstrate that they have fewer cesarean sections. Adolescent mothers with ages between 10-14 years have a higher risk of having a preterm delivery, low birth product and products with lower APGAR score.
