RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Low-grade inflammation is a significant component of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Systemic immune inflammation index (SII), a newly defined ratio combining neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet counts, has not yet been evaluated in the pediatric CKD population nor in the context of CKD progression or dialysis. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the complete blood cell count (CBC)-driven parameters, including SII, in children with CKD and to assess their potential usefulness in the prediction of the need for chronic dialysis. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective study was conducted on 27 predialysis children with CKD stages 4-5 and 39 children on chronic dialysis. The data were analyzed with the artificial intelligence tools. RESULTS: The Random Forest Classifier (RFC) model with the input variables of neutrophil count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and SII turned out to be the best predictor of the progression of pediatric CKD into end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) requiring dialysis. Out of these variables, SII showed the largest share in the prediction of the need for renal replacement therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic inflammation plays a pivotal role in the progression of CKD into ESKD. Among CBC-driven ratios, SII seems to be the most useful predictor of the need for chronic dialysis in CKD children.

RESUMEN

Ten leading wheat cultivars originating from the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR) - National Research Institute (Poland) and the Department of Gene Bank (Czech Republic) were used to establish a field experiment in 2017 and 2018 at the Dlon Experimental Farm. The analyzed wheat genotypes were characterized by diversified field resistance to leaf rust. Jubilatka, Thatcher and Sparta were the most resistant cultivars in field conditions in both 2017 and 2018. The aim of the work was to identify the Lr11, L13, Lr16 and Lr26 genes encoding resistance to leaf rust using molecular SSR markers (wmc24, wmc261, Xgwm630, Xwmc764 and P6M12) and to develop multiplex PCR conditions to accelerate identification of these genes. Markers of three leaf rust resistance genes have been identified simultaneously in these cultivars. Jubilatka, Thatcher and Sparta cultivars may serve as a good source of the analyzed leaf rust resistance genes. In addition, multiplex PCR conditions have been developed for the simultaneous identification of the Lr11 and Lr16 and Lr11 and Lr26 gene pairs.

RESUMEN

Solid-stemmed spring wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) are resistant to the stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus Nort.) and lodging. Anthers of 24 spring wheat cultivars with varying content of pith in the stem were used in the experiment. All were classified into three groups: solid, medium-solid and hollow stems. There was considerable influence of the cultivar on callus formation and green plant regeneration. The highest efficiency of green plant regeneration (24%) was observed for the solid-stemmed AC Abbey cultivar. There was no regeneration from the explants of four cultivars: CLTR 7027, Alentejano, Marquis and Bombona. Principal component analysis showed no differences between the cases under observation (callus induction and green plant regeneration) in their response to pre-treatment temperatures (4 and 8°C). The examination of the effects of various auxin types in the induction medium on callus formation and green plant regeneration revealed that the strongest stimulation of these processes was observed in the C17 medium with 2,4-D and dicamba. The efficiency of callus formation and green plant regeneration was greater in solid-stemmed cultivars than in hollow-stemmed cultivars.
