RESUMEN

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite increased studies which have identified the treatment needs of women who commit sex offenses, there are no empirically derived treatment models based upon a comprehensive theoretical paradigm. RECENT FINDINGS: Although current treatment models include similar goals and approaches, there are some important distinctions. The following article provides an overview of two treatment models, gender-responsive treatment and gendered strength-based treatment. These models were then examined to determine whether they could be integrated within a comprehensive theoretical rehabilitation framework such as the Good Lives Model. The Good Lives Model provides a comprehensive theoretical framework that allows for integration of the gender-responsive and gendered strength-based treatment models. These treatment models utilize strength-based approaches, risk-need-responsivity principles, cognitive behavioral techniques, and relational processes to foster change.

RESUMEN

Adverse childhood experiences are associated with a multitude of health and social problems. In addition to an increased risk of poor health, mental disorders, and substance abuse, childhood maltreatment is also significantly related to adult violent offending. Although gender-specific analyses suggest that early childhood maltreatment precedes later violence for males across offense categories, it is unknown whether this association also applies to different types of female offenders. This study explores the types and quantity of adverse childhood experiences for two groups of violent female offenders: perpetrators of intentional homicide ( N = 28) and perpetrators of sexual offenses ( N = 47). A nonparametric analysis using odds ratios (OR) indicated that female homicide perpetrators experienced significantly more adverse childhood experiences (as measured by the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire) than female sex offenders. Implications for future research are discussed.

RESUMEN

The general consensus among researchers is that the prevalence of sexual paraphilias among female sexual offenders is low relative to male sexual offenders (Cortoni & Gannon, 2013). In addition, there is very limited information about gender specific paraphilic behaviors and characteristics pertaining to females who commit sexual assaults (Pflugradt & Allen, 2014). This study examined the characteristics of female, solo sexual offenders who sexually assaulted prepubescent (n = 14) and postpubescent (n = 15) children. A content analysis was utilized to examine their psychological characteristics. Nonparametric analysis indicated that significantly more offenders with prepubescent victims had multiple paraphilias, poor cognitive problem-solving, noncompliance with supervision, and negative social influences. Limitations and future research directions are discussed.

RESUMEN

Although actuarial instruments are ubiquitously used in the field of sex offender recidivism risk assessment, there is limited empirical information about the underlying constructs from which they are derived. The following study utilized a nonparametric item response theory procedure, a Mokken analysis, and nonlinear factor analysis (Normal Ogive Harmonic Analysis Robust Method) to explore the underlying constructs of the STATIC-99 scores obtained for male sexual offenders (N = 451) referred for an evaluation to determine if they met criteria for civil commitment under a state's Sexually Violent Persons Law. The results from the analyses indicated that the STATIC-99 comprises the two previously identified constructs associated with sexual deviancy and antisocial behaviors as well as a third, additional construct, associated with the items pertaining to age and past marital-type relationships. These findings support Hanson and Thornton's assertion that sexual offender recidivism risk is multifactorial and not the result of a single underlying trait. Implications for future research are discussed.

RESUMEN

This study examined the association between female sexual offending behavioral patterns, as delineated by Sandler and Freeman's (2007) typologies, and executive functioning. The sample included all referrals for sexual offender assessments within a women's maximum/medium security prison between January 2009 and October 2009. Each subject was administered the Stroop (Golden & Freshwater, 2002) and Trail Making Test (Reitan, 2004) and were assigned to a typological category. Nonparametric analyses were conducted to determine if there was an association between typology and performance on neuropsychological tests. Results yielded no significant associations between test scores and typological category. Subjects displayed average capacities for a subset of executive functions, suggesting that the mechanisms for sexually offending behavior in females may differ from males.
