RESUMEN

The objective was to evaluate the chemical composition and in vitro fermentation of spineless cactus of the genus Nopalea, F-21 (Nopalea cochenillifera Dyck), IPA-Sertânia (Nopalea cochenillifera Dyck) and Miúda (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck), in different phenophases. There was no effect (P < 0.05) of the phenological phases of spineless cactus on DM, ash, OM, EE, and CP. Varieties F-21 and Miúda presented higher values of DM and OM, whereas the CP was higher for IPA-Sertânia. The contents of NDF, ADF, and ADL, as well as the fractions of carbohydrates B2 and C were higher in the mature stage, irrespective of the variety. The Miúda variety showed higher levels of NFC and fractions A + B1 and the lower levels of pectin compared to the F-21 and IPA-Sertânia varieties, but not differ of TC to F-21. The volume of gas produced via the degradation of NFC was higher for young phenological phases. The young and intermediate stages showed a higher in vitro digestibility of DM. Based on the results, varieties IPA-Sertânia and Miúda have a high potential for use in animal feed because of their high nutritional quality. Mature cladodes showed a higher fibrous fraction and lower digestibility in all varieties.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Head and neck cancer is an umbrella term for tumor manifestations across the head and neck regions, including the oral cavity, pharynx (including the naso, oro, and hypopharynx), larynx, and sinuses. Treatment options for head and neck cancer include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, with specific treatment plans depending upon individual tumor location and staging, together with overall patient health status. Furthermore, definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) has emerged as a highly effective therapeutic option for locoregional advanced head and neck squamous cell cancer. However, such therapy has also been linked to the development of spondylodiscitis. Spondylodiscitis consists of an infection starting at the vertebral endplates and spreading into the intervertebral discs, typically manifesting in adults. Case Presentation and Conclusion: This case report describes our clinical team's experience in managing three separate cases of spondylodiscitis following CRT for head and neck tumors that presented at our clinic for diagnosis and treatment in order to identify predisposing factors that underlie the link between CRT and spondylodiscitis.

RESUMEN

We present a case report of a patient with a rare high-grade transformation of an acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) of the parotid gland, who developed Cushing's syndrome (CS) as a result of ectopic secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone by the tumour. The hypercortisolism was successfully treated with metyrapone, and the ACC was treated with local radiotherapy and a combined six cycles of gemcitabine and cisplatin, having achieved a partial response to the tumour. A multidisciplinary approach and combined medical treatment with radiotherapy and were essential for disease control and CS management. ACC should be considered in the differential diagnosis of ectopic CS.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the nutritive value of signalgrass (Urochloa decumbens Stapf R. D. Webster) and sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.), and animal performance in grass monoculture pastures and in silvopastoral system (SPS) in the early development stage, in the Agreste of Pernambuco. Four treatments were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications: signalgrass + Eucalyptus spp.; signalgrass + sabiá; signalgrass monoculture and sabiá monoculture. Holstein × Zebu crossbred calves (170 ± 15 kg BW) were managed under continuous stocking with variable stocking rate (SR). The dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of signalgrass and sabiá were assessed, as well as forage allowance (FA), stocking rate (SR), average daily weight gain (ADG) and weight gain per area (WGA) over eleven evaluation cycles (March 2019 to January 2020). Signalgrass had the highest DM contents in March 2019 and January 2020 (456 and 507 g kg-1, respectively), while for IVDMD the highest values ranged from 436 to 547 g kg-1 (April to August 2019). Sabiá presented the highest's IVDMD (311 and 381 g kg-1 DM) and DM content (385 and 416 g kg-1) and lowest CP (110 and 82 g kg-1 DM) and NDF (568 and 500 g kg-1 DM) in November 2019 and January 2020, respectively. FA and SR decreased throughout the evaluation cycles. ADG (0.38 kg animal-1 day-1) and WGA (17.89 kg ha-1 28 days-1) did not differ among treatments, with weight loss in the period of low water availability. In the early development stage of the trees, SPS does not affect the nutritive value of signalgrass, nor the animal performance.
