RESUMEN

An accurate description of short-range interactions among atoms is crucial for simulating irradiation effects in applications related to ion modification techniques. A smooth integration of the Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark (ZBL) potential with the adaptive intermolecular reactive empirical bond-order (AIREBO) potential was achieved to accurately describe the short-range interactions for carbon-based materials. The influence of the ZBL connection on potential energy, force, and various AIREBO components, including reactive empirical bond-order (REBO), Lennard-Jones (LJ), and the torsional component, was examined with configurations of the dimer structure, tetrahedron structure, and monolayer graphene. The REBO component is primarily responsible for the repulsive force, while the LJ component is mainly active in long-range interactions. It is shown that under certain conditions, the torsional energy can lead to a strong repulsive force at short range. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the collision process in configurations of the C-C dimer and bulk graphite. Cascade collisions in graphite with kinetic energies of 1 keV and 10 keV for primary knock-on atoms showed that the short-range description can greatly impact the number of generated defects and their morphology.

Agrobacterium sp. are notable for their ability to produce substantial amounts of exopolysaccharides. Our study identified an exopolysaccharide (Galacan, 4982.327 kDa) from Agrobacterium sp. FN01. Galacan is a heteropolysaccharide primarily composed of glucose and galactose at a molar ratio of 25:1. The FT-IR results suggested that Galacan had typical absorption peaks of polysaccharide. The results of periodate oxidation, Smith degradation, and NMR confirmed the presence of structural units, such as ß-D-Galp(→, →3)ß-D-Galp(1→, →2,3)ß-D-Glcp(1→, ß-D-Glcp(1→, and →2)ß-D-Glcp(1→. Galacan demonstrated significant biological activities. In experiments conducted with zebrafish, it facilitated the proliferation of Lactobacillus brevis in the intestinal tract, suggesting potential prebiotic properties. Moreover, in vivo studies revealed its antihyperglycemic effects, as evidenced by significant reductions in blood glucose levels and enhanced fluorescence intensity of pancreatic ß cells in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycemic zebrafish model. Additionally, antiaging assays demonstrated Galacan's ability to inhibit ß-galactosidase activity and enhance telomerase activity in a hydrogen peroxide (HP)-induced aging zebrafish model. These findings emphasized the potential of Galacan as a natural prebiotic with promising applications in diabetes prevention and antiaging interventions.

The lower limit temperature in the crop water stress index (CWSI) model refers to the canopy temperature (Tc) or the canopy-air temperature differences (dT) under well-watered conditions, which has significant impacts on the accuracy of the model in quantifying plant water status. At present, the direct estimation of lower limit temperature based on data-driven method has been successfully used in crops, but its applicability has not been tes-ted in forest ecosystems. We collected continuously and synchronously Tc and meteorological data in a Quercus variabilis plantation at the southern foot of Taihang Mountain to evaluate the feasibility of multiple linear regression model and BP neural network model for estimating the lower limit temperature and the accuracy of the CWSI indicating water status of the plantation. The results showed that, in the forest ecosystem without irrigation conditions, the lower limit temperature could be obtained by setting soil moisture as saturation in the multiple linear regression mo-del and the BP neural network model with soil water content, wind speed, net radiation, vapor pressure deficit and air temperature as input parameters. Combining the lower limit temperature and the upper limit temperature determined by the theoretical equation to normalize the measured Tc and dT could realize the non-destructive, rapid, and automatic diagnosis of the water status of Q. variabilis plantation. Among them, the CWSI obtained by combining the lower limit temperature determined by the dT under well-watered condition calculated by the BP neural network model and the upper limit temperature was the most suitable for accurate monitoring water status of the plantation. The coefficient of determination, root mean square error, and index of agreement between the calculated CWSI and measured CWSI were 0.81, 0.08, and 0.90, respectively. This study could provide a reference method for efficient and accurate monitoring of forest ecosystem water status.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are reported to be responsible for the negative prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients due to the mediated immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). The selective and chronic circumvention of tumor-infiltrated MDSCs has potential clinical significance for CRC treatment, which unluckily remains a technical challenge. Because tumor hypoxia makes a significant contribution to the recruitment of MDSCs in tumor sites, a dual oxygen-supplied immunosuppression-inhibiting nanomedicine (DOIN) is demonstrated for overcoming tumor hypoxia, which achieves selective and long-term inhibition of intratumoral recruitment of MDSCs. The DOIN is constructed by the encasement of perfluorooctyl bromide (PFOB) and 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) into a TME-responsive amphiphilic polymer. This nanoplatform directly carries oxygen to the tumor region and simultaneously loosens the condensed tumor extracellular matrix for the normalization of tumor vasculature, which selectively remodels the TME toward one adverse to the intratumoral recruitment of MDSCs. Importantly, this nanoplatform offers a long-acting alleviation of the hypoxic TME, chronically avoiding the comeback of tumor-infiltrated MDSCs. Consequently, the immunosuppressive TME is relieved, and T cells are successfully proliferated and activated into cytotoxic T lymphocytes, which boosts a systemic immune response and contributes to lasting inhibition of tumor growth with a prolonged survival span of xenograft.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the sleep quality of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) and the associated factors. Moreover, Preliminary exploration of the clinical significance of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in pSS patients with sleep disorders. METHODS: A self-report survey was administered to 111 pSS patients and 40 healthy individuals using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality. General clinical information,the sleep quality and mental conditions were collected using on-site questionnaires and various scales. 40 healthy controls from the health examination center of the same hospital, who were age and sex matched. Detection of serum BDNF levels by ELISA method . Independent samples t tests, Chi-square analysis, logistic regression were used to analyze these data. RESULTS: Patients with pSS had higher scores on the PSQI than the healthy individuals. Abnormal sweating, high PHQ-9 and ESSPRI scores were independent risk factors for sleep disorders. pSS patients had lower serum BDNF than the healthy individuals, The area under the curve (AUC) of predicting sleep disorder in pSS patients using detection of serum BDNF level was 0.8470, and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.951 and 0.727, which were superior to PHQ-9 and GAD-7. CONCLUSION: Compared with the healthy individuals, pSS patients had a higher prevalence of sleep disorders and lower serum BNDF. Serum BDNF level demonstrated greater predictive advantage for sleep disorder in pSS patients.

Interstitial diffusion is important for radiation defect evolution in zirconium alloys. This study employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate interstitial diffusion in α-Zr and its alloys with 1.0 at.% Nb and 1.0 at.% Sn using a variety of interatomic potentials. Pronounced differences in diffusion anisotropy were observed in pure Zr among the employed potentials. This was attributed to the considerable differences in migration barriers among the various interstitial configurations. The introduction of small concentrations of Nb and Sn solute atoms was found to significantly influence diffusion anisotropy by either directly participating in the diffusion process or altering the chemical environment around the diffusing species. Based on the moderate agreement of interstitial energetics in pure Zr, accurately describing interstitial diffusion in Zr alloys is expected to be more complex. This work underscores the importance of the careful validation and selection of interatomic potentials and highlights the need to understand the effects of solute atoms on interstitial diffusion.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has garnered significant attention for treating diverse malignant tumours due to its minimally invasive nature, reduced damage to healthy tissues, and potential mitigation of side effects. However, its application in glioblastoma (GBM) is hindered by the diminished capacity of CDT agents to traverse the blood-brain barrier (BBB), inadequate tumour targeting efficiency, and restricted availability of H2O2 within the tumour microenvironment (TME). To address these challenges, we devised a novel CDT agent (Fe@tFNAs-ANG-3AT) based on a tetrahedral framework nucleic acids (tFNAs). Fe@tFNAs-ANG-3AT was constructed by anchoring iron ions (Fe3+) onto the dual appendages-modified tFNAs. Specifically, one appendage, Angiopep-2 (ANG, a penetrating peptide), facilitates Fe@tFNAs-ANG-3AT penetration across the BBB and selective targeting of tumour cells. Simultaneously, the second appendage, 3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole (3AT, a H2O2 enzyme inhibitor), augments the H2O2 levels required for effective CDT treatment. Upon tumour cell internalization, the loaded Fe3+ in Fe@tFNAs-ANG-3AT is reduced to Fe2+ by the overexpressed glutathione (GSH) in the TME, catalysing the generation of cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and inducing tumour cell death via elevated oxidative stress levels within tumour cells. It is anticipated that Fe@tFNAs-ANG-3AT holds promise as a transformative treatment strategy for GBM.

The distinctive multi-ring structure and remarkable electrical characteristics of biphenylene render it a material of considerable interest, notably for its prospective utilization as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries. However, understanding the mechanical traits of biphenylene is essential for its application, particularly due to the volumetric fluctuations resulting from lithium ion insertion and extraction during charging and discharging cycles. In this regard, this study investigates the performance of pristine biphenylene and materials embedded with various types of hole defects under uniaxial tension utilizing molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, from the stress‒strain curves, we obtained key mechanical properties, including toughness, strength, Young's modulus and fracture strain. It was observed that various near-circular hole (including circular, square, hexagonal, and octagonal) defects result in remarkably similar properties. A more quantitative scaling analysis revealed that, in comparison with the exact shape of the defect, the area of the defect is more critical for determining the mechanical properties of biphenylene. Our finding might be beneficial to the defect engineering of two-dimensional materials.

The wound healing process was often accompanied by bacterial infection and inflammation. The combination of electrically conductive nanomaterials and wound dressings could accelerate cell proliferation through endogenous electrical signaling, effectively promoting wound healing. In this study, polypyrrole was modified with dopamine hydrochloride by an in situ polymerization to form dopamine-polypyrrole (DA-Ppy) conductive nanofibers which successfully enhanced the water dispersibility and biocompatibility of polypyrrole. The DA-Ppy nanofibers were dispersed in an aqueous solution for >48 h and still maintained good stability. In addition, the DA-Ppy nanofibers showed good photothermal properties, and the temperature could reach 59.7 °C by 1.5 W/cm2 near-infrared light irradiation (NIR) for 10 min. DA-Ppy conductive nanofibres could be well dispersed in 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic acid modified chitosan-carboxymethylated ß-cyclodextrin modified gelatin (CG) hydrogel due to the presence of DA, which endowed CG/DA-Ppy hydrogel with good adhesion properties, and the hydrogel adhered to the pigskin would not be dislodged by washing with running water. Under NIR, the CG/DA-Ppy hydrogel showed significant antimicrobial properties. Moreover, the CG/DA-Ppy hydrogel had excellent biocompatibility. In addition, CG/DA-Ppy hydrogel was effective in scavenging ROS, inducing macrophage polarization towards the M2 phenotype, and modulating the level of wound inflammation in vitro. Finally, it was confirmed in rat-infected wounds that the tissue regeneration effect and collagen deposition in the CG/DA-Ppy + NIR group were significantly better than the other groups in the repair of infected wounds, indicating better repair of infected wounds. The results suggested that the photothermal, antioxidant DA-Ppy conductive nanofiber had great potential for application in infected wound healing.

Organic scintillators are praised for their abundant element reserves, facile preparation procedures, and rich structures. However, the weak X-ray attenuation ability and low exciton utilization efficiency result in unsatisfactory scintillation performance. Herein, a new family of highly efficient organic phosphonium halide salts with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are designed by innovatively adopting quaternary phosphonium as the electron acceptor, while dimethylamine group and halide anions (I-) serve as the electron donor. The prepared butyl(2-[2-(dimethylamino)phenyl]phenyl)diphenylphosphonium iodide (C4-I) exhibits bright blue emission and an ultra-high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 100 %. Efficient charge transfer is realized through the unique n-π and anion-π stacking in solid-state C4-I. Photophysical studies of C4-I suggest that the incorporation of I accounts for high intersystem crossing rate (kISC) and reverse intersystem crossing rate (kRISC), suppressing the intrinsic prompt fluorescence and enabling near-pure TADF emission at room temperature. Benefitting from the large Stokes shift, high PLQY, efficient exciton utilization, and remarkable X-ray attenuation ability endowed by I, C4-I delivers an outstanding light yield of 80721 photons/MeV and a low limit of detection (LoD) of 22.79 nGy ⋅ s-1. This work would provide a rational design concept and open up an appealing road for developing efficient organic scintillators with tunable emission, strong X-ray attenuation ability, and excellent scintillator performance.

This study aims to explore the effect of Lycii Fructus and Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma(LFSMR), a drug pair possesses the function of nourishing Yin, promoting blood circulation, and brightening the eyes, in treating retinitis pigmentosa(RP)by inhibiting the gliosis of Müller cells(MCs) and inducing their reprogramming and differentiation into various types of retinal nerve cells. Twelve C57 mice were used as the normal control group, and 48 transgenic RP(rd10) mice were randomly divided into the model group, positive control group, and low and high dose LFSMR groups, with 12 mice in each group. HE staining was used to detect pathological changes in the retina, and an electroretinogram was used to detect retinal function. Retinal optical coherence tomography was used to detect retinal thickness and perform fundus photography, and laser speckle perfusion imaging was used to detect local retinal blood flow. Digital PCR was used to detect gene expression related to retinal nerve cells, and immunofluorescence was used to detect protein expression related to retinal nerve cells. LFSMR could significantly improve the pathological changes, increase the amplitude of a and b waves, increase the retinal thickness, restore retinal damage, and increase retinal blood flow in mice with RP lesions. LFSMR could also significantly inhibit the m RNA expression of the glial fibrillary acidic protein( GFAP) during the pathogenesis of RP and upregulate m RNA expression of sex determining region Y box protein 2(SOX2), paired box protein 6(Pax6),rhodopsin, protein kinase C-α(PKCα), syntaxin, and thymic cell antigen 1. 1(Thy1. 1). LFSMR could significantly inhibit GFAP protein expression and enhance protein expression of SOX2, Pax6, rhodopsin, PKCα, syntaxin, and Thy1. 1. It could also reverse the pathological changes in the retina of rd10 mice, improve retinal function and fundus performance, increase retinal thickness, enhance local retinal blood flow, and exert therapeutic effects on RP. The mechanism of action of LFSMR may be related to inhibiting the gliosis of MCs and promoting their reprogramming and differentiation into various types of retinal nerve cells.

Lower olefins are widely used in the chemical industry as basic carbon-based feedstocks. Here, we report the catalytic system featuring isolated single-atom sites of iridium (Ir1) that can function within the entire temperature range of 300-600 °C and transform alkanes with conversions close to thermodynamics-dictated levels. The high turnover frequency values of the Ir1 system are comparable to those of homogeneous catalytic reactions. Experimental data and theoretical calculations both indicate that Ir1 is the primary catalytic site, while the coordinating C and N atoms help to enhance the activity and stability, respectively; all three kinds of elements cooperatively contribute to the high performance of this novel active site. We have further immobilized this catalyst on particulate Al2O3, and we found that the resulting composite system under mimicked industrial conditions could still give high catalytic performances; in addition, we have also developed and established a new scheme of periodical in situ regeneration specifically for this composite particulate catalyst.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate differential associations of traditional and novel adiposity indices with visual impairment (VI) in the middle-aged and older Chinese population. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 7750 Chinese older adults aged over 45 were included at baseline 2011, and 4133 participants who accomplished all three interviews from 2011 to 2015 were adapted for longitudinal analyses. We enrolled six adiposity indices, including the body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI) and conicity index (ConI). Visual status and other covariates included sociodemographic characteristics, medical supports and lifestyle-related factors. Cross-sectional correlations were assessed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. For longitudinal analysis, generalised linear models with generalised estimating equations were used to determine the association between time-varying adiposity and visual status. RESULTS: Higher levels of WHtR/WWI/ABSI/BRI/ConI were significantly associated with an increased prevalence of VI, whereas a higher BMI was associated with a decreased prevalence of VI. Only WWI was significantly related to the prevalence of VI after adjustment for multiple confounders in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses (all p values <0.05). The multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI) of VI associated with the highest (vs lowest) quintile of WWI was 1.900 (1.407 to 2.565). CONCLUSION: WWI is a reliable alternative adiposity index that exhibits a dose-response association with the prevalence of VI in the Chinese population. The WWI-VI correlation may eliminate the obesity paradox in the ophthalmic epidemiological area and indicate the detrimental impact of changes in body composition on VI.

AIM: To develop a classifier for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome differentiation of diabetic retinopathy (DR), using optimized machine learning algorithms, which can provide the basis for TCM objective and intelligent syndrome differentiation. METHODS: Collated data on real-world DR cases were collected. A variety of machine learning methods were used to construct TCM syndrome classification model, and the best performance was selected as the basic model. Genetic Algorithm (GA) was used for feature selection to obtain the optimal feature combination. Harris Hawk Optimization (HHO) was used for parameter optimization, and a classification model based on feature selection and parameter optimization was constructed. The performance of the model was compared with other optimization algorithms. The models were evaluated with accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score as indicators. RESULTS: Data on 970 cases that met screening requirements were collected. Support Vector Machine (SVM) was the best basic classification model. The accuracy rate of the model was 82.05%, the precision rate was 82.34%, the recall rate was 81.81%, and the F1 value was 81.76%. After GA screening, the optimal feature combination contained 37 feature values, which was consistent with TCM clinical practice. The model based on optimal combination and SVM (GA_SVM) had an accuracy improvement of 1.92% compared to the basic classifier. SVM model based on HHO and GA optimization (HHO_GA_SVM) had the best performance and convergence speed compared with other optimization algorithms. Compared with the basic classification model, the accuracy was improved by 3.51%. CONCLUSION: HHO and GA optimization can improve the model performance of SVM in TCM syndrome differentiation of DR. It provides a new method and research idea for TCM intelligent assisted syndrome differentiation.

Solid solution of metal-doped oxide has been widely used in material industry and catalysis process. Its performance is highly correlated with the distribution of doped ions. Due to the complex distribution of doped ions in solid solution and its variation with temperatures, to obtain the microstructures of metal-doped ions in solid solution remains a substantial challenge. Taken Ce1-xZrxO2 as a model, the global structure searching, structures proportion with temperature determined by Boltzmann distribution, and the weighted simulation Raman spectra were integrated to explore the microstructures of metal-doped solid solution oxides. It was further verified by application into rutile and anatase TiO2 mixture, indicating that the present method is feasible to deduce the microstructure of metal composite oxides. We anticipate that it provides a powerful solution to explore microstructures of solid solution and complex metal oxides.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is experiencing a concerning rise in both incidence and mortality rates. Current therapeutic strategies are limited in their effectiveness, largely due to the complex causes of the disease and significant levels of drug resistance. Given the latest developments in human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) research, there is a debate over the continued use of stem cell transplantation for treating tumors. Consequently, this study seeks to explore the role of hUC-MSCs in the management of HCC. METHODS AND RESULTS: HUC-MSCs increased the number (10.75 ± 1.50) in the DEN/TCPOBOP-induced mice hepatoma model, compared with DMSO group (7.25 ± 1.71). Moreover, the liver index in hUC-MSCs group (0.21 ± 0.06) was greater than that in DMSO group (0.09 ± 0.01). Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis revealed that while hUC-MSCs did not alter Foxp3 expression, they significantly stimulated Ki67 expression, indicative of increased tumor cellular proliferation. Additionally, immunofluorescence (IF) studies showed that hUC-MSCs increased CD8+ T cell counts without affecting macrophage numbers. Notably, granzyme B expression remained nearly undetectable. We observed that serum IL-18 levels were higher in the hUC-MSCs group (109.66 ± 0.38 pg/ml) compared to the DMSO group (91.14 ± 4.37 pg/ml). Conversely, IL-1ß levels decreased in the hUC-MSCs group (63.00 ± 0.53 pg/ml) relative to the DMSO group (97.38 ± 9.08 pg/ml). CONCLUSIONS: According to this study, hUC-MSCs promoted the growth of liver tumors. Therefore, we proposed that hUC-MSCs are not suitable for treating HCC, as they exhibit clinically prohibited abnormalities.

RESUMEN

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are exceedingly rare etiological agents of intracranial infections. Among them, Mycobacterium rhodesiae stands out as an even less common pathogen. In this paper, we report the first documented case of a central nervous system (CNS) infection in humans caused by Mycobacterium rhodesiae, which has specific imaging findings and good response to the therapy by using Linezolid, Clarithromycin, and Minocycline. The diagnosis was facilitated by a comprehensive multimodal approach, incorporating multisite imaging, cerebrospinal fluid analysis via next-generation sequencing (NGS), and targeted genetic testing. Furthermore, this paper provides a derivation of the clinical characteristics observed in other documented instances of CNS infections attributable to NTM and based on a review of the current literature. Our experience contributes to the evidence that is needed to understand the full spectrum of NTM-related CNS pathologies and underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary diagnostic process in atypical presentations of intracranial infections.

BACKGROUND: Little information is available regarding global H. pylori recurrence, recrudescence, and re-infection in pediatric patients after successful eradication, nor are their influencing factors clear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine global H. pylori recurrence status and its influencing factors in children and adolescents to improve infection management and disease prevention. METHODS: Published studies on H. pylori recurrence in children and adolescents were collected from major public databases until January 2023. H. pylori recurrences were determined using randomized-effect and fixed-effect models. Stratified analysis was performed based on various regions, countries, publication time, human development indexes (HDIs), and ages. RESULTS: A total of 3310 relevant articles were screened, and 30 articles (1915 participants) were finally enrolled for analysis. The overall H. pylori recurrence rate was 19%, and the annual recurrence rate was 13%. In stratified analysis, H. pylori annual recurrence rate in Asian children was higher than that in Europe (17% vs. 6%) and higher in developing countries than in developed countries (18% vs. 5%). In children aged ≤ 5 years, ≤ 10 years, and 11-18 years, the H. pylori recurrence rates were 30%, 14%, and 8%, respectively. H. pylori recrudescence and re-infection rates were 6% and 10%, respectively, and its recurrence was inversely correlated with HDI. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide insights into global H. pylori recurrence, annual recurrence, recrudescence, and re-infection status in pediatric population. The stratified analysis revealed the pattern and seriousness of infection, which requires further efforts to improve patient care.

Aims: To investigate the association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and sensory impairments (SIs). Methods: We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) (2015). Logistic regressions estimated the odds ratio for associations of SEP with SIs. In addition, Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to assess the causal relationship between them with the inverse variance weighting (IVW) estimator. MR-Egger, simple median, weighted median, maximum likelihood, and robust adjusted profile score were employed for sensitivity analyses. Results: In the observational survey, we enrolled 19,690 individuals aged 45 and above. SEP was negatively associated with SIs. Adjusted odds of vision impairment were higher for illiterate (1.50; 95%CI: 1.19, 1.91), less than elementary school diploma (1.76; 95%CI: 1.39, 2.25), middle school diploma (1.53; 95%CI: 1.21, 1.93) and lower income (all p < 0.001). The odds of hearing impairment were significantly higher for people with less than a high school diploma than those with a college degree or higher diploma, for agricultural workers than non-agricultural workers, and for people in low-income families (p < 0.01). The MR analysis also showed that occupation was associated with HI (1.04, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.09, p < 0.05) using IVW. Conclusion: We found that both observational and causal evidence supports the theory that SEP can result in SIs and that timely discovery, targeted management, and education can prevent SIs among middle-aged and older adults.
