RESUMEN

Poor waste management is increasingly becoming a major challenge for municipalities, globally. Unlike previous waste management studies in Nigeria, this study examines the implications of waste management to regional greenhouse gas emissions based on awareness levels and perception of urban inhabitants. Benin City was divided into four residential zones: core, intermediate, suburban, and planned estates. Blocking was utilized to collect data from a total of 2720 randomly selected inhabitants through a self-administered survey. Results reveals low awareness level in terms of indiscrimination dumping of waste, thereby promoting sustainable mitigation and adaptation measures region-wide. It is imperative to integrate various aspects of regional government services such as infrastructure, urban planning and development, socioeconomics, public health, and regulation enforcement. Waste management policy is strengthened via working groups, community, and regional authorities.

RESUMEN

2,2'-Thiodiacetic acid derivatives have a wide application potential, mainly in coordination chemistry. This research indicates that quaternary ammonium 2,2'-thiodiacetate salts may also be potent herbicidal agents used in agriculture. To provide a rationale for this statement, the toxic effect by a alkyl and aryl quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) on plant growth was investigated. The phytotoxicity of these compounds was tested against cultivated monocotyledonous (spring barley) and dicotyledonous (common radish) plants, whereas herbicidal activity was investigated in relation to popular weeds species (white goosefoot, sorrel and gallant-soldier). The results showed that aliphatic QASs possessed a low phytotoxicity to food crops and that some of them (in particular triethylammonium salt) had potent and selective herbicidal properties against common weeds, such as sorrel and gallant-soldier. However, the investigated compounds appeared to be ineffective herbicides against white goosefoot.

RESUMEN

2,2'-Thiodiacetates with their excellent complexing properties may be used as metal extraction agents, fluorescent and superparamagnetic materials, antibacterial and anticancer medical agents, however there are no data concerning the environmental impact of 2,2'-thiodiacetates derivatives and data definying the potential hazard connected with their use. This study describes the ecotoxicity assessment of seven 2,2'-thiodiacetates with non-metallic, alkyl and aryl ammonium cations, which were obtained in an environmentally friendly, solvent-free syntheses. The ecotoxicity of these water soluble compounds was tested in aquatic and benthic environments using luminescent marine bacteria Vibrio fischeri (Microtox® test) and the crustaceans Heterocypris incongruens (Ostracodtoxkit F™), respectively. The antimicrobial and antifungal activity against Trichoderma viridis, Aspergillus niger, Rhizoctonia solani and Escherichia coli was also investigated. The results showed how structural changes within ammonium cations themselves influence ecotoxicity: the QASs with alkylammonium cations exhibited a similar, rather low toxicity both to Vibrio fischeri and Heterocypris incongruens, and they would not pose a risk to these organisms in case of leakage. Higher toxicity was observed in case of two isoquinolinium salts, however it was rather associated with the heteroaromatic cation, than with the 2,2'-thiodiacetate anion.

RESUMEN

The harmful effect of ionic liquids (ILs) on the environment is one of the important elements of scientific research conducted around the world. This study presents the effect of ionic liquids, containing the asymmetric cations benzyltrimethylammonium chloride [BenzTMA][Cl] and benzyltriethylammonium chloride [BenzTEA][Cl], on physiological and biochemical changes in common radish plants and spring barley seedlings. The examined ILs demonstrated low toxicity to higher plants. The compound that exhibited higher phytotoxicity to these plant species was [BenzTMA][Cl], whereas the plant that was more resistant to such ILs was common radish. Both the ionic liquids, particularly at higher concentrations, led to changes in the metabolism of plants, which resulted in a decrease of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoids content. The observed changes were positively correlated with increasing concentrations of the examined ILs in the soil. In the case of spring barley, a decrease in the fresh weight and an increase in the dry weight of the seedlings were also observed. The evidence of oxidative stress occurrence in spring barley was observed due to the accumulation of malondialdehyde and free proline, as well as due to an increase in the activity of catalase and peroxidase. The changes in these biomarkers indicating oxidative stress occurrence in common radish plants were much lower. An increase in the content of chloride ions was observed in both the plants.

RESUMEN

Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed in 76 patients referred to our department because of intellectual disability and dysmorphic features that can be related to subtelomeric microaberrations. In all the patients, conventional cytogenetic methods revealed normal karyotype. Four (5.3%) subtelomeric rearrangements were detected by FISH: 2 subtelomeric 1p36 deletions, an unbalanced translocation involving chromosomes 1 and 12 with 1p36 deletion, and a de novo balanced translocation involving chromosomes 19 and 22. Thus, 3 cases of 1p36 subtelomeric deletion were found (3.95%). To confirm subtelomeric rearrangements in 2 patients, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) was applied. Moreover, 3 cases of polymorphism without phenotypic effects were found: in 2 patients, the polymorphism involved the long arm of chromosome 2 (maternal derivative in both patients), while in the third patient, a polymorphism of the long arm of chromosome 7 was diagnosed. The latter polymorphism was also found in the patient's mother and grandfather.

RESUMEN

We present the results of prenatal diagnosis in 2241 women carried out in one centre in the period 1985-1994. Indications were cytogenetic in 84% of the cases, of those in 77% it was maternal age 35 years and over. The second most frequent indication was open neural tube defect in a previously born child (7.5%). Abnormal results of prenatal tests in whole material were obtained in 60 cases (2.4%); in 47 cases this was chromosomal aberration. Abnormal result of prenatal test did not necessarily mean selective termination of pregnancy. In 17.5% of chromosomal fetal aberrations pregnancy was continued (it concerned mostly aberrations involving sex chromosomes). The risk of prenatal diagnosis (miscarriage due to the procedure) according to our estimation was between 0.3 and 0.6% of the tested pregnancies. Sociological analysis of the tested group showed clearly that women with better education (secondary and higher level) in Poland have much better access to prenatal diagnosis. Most of the tested woman (72%) considered a prenatal test a sine qua non condition of their procreation.

RESUMEN

During the last 12 years 4258 amniocenteses were performed between the 12th and 20th week of gestation (including 323 early amniocenteses carried out before 15th week). In every case, cytogenetical examination was performed and concentration of AFP was determined. In cases with elevated AFP level electrophoresis of AchE izoenzymes was performed. The results of the tests enabled us to calculate laboratory standard values of AFP in the amniotic fluid for 12th to 20th weeks of gestation. In 22 of 44 pregnancies with Down's syndrome the value of AFP concentration was below the 25th percentile of the laboratory normal value. In 5 of 10 pregnancies with Edward's syndrome AFP level exceeded significantly the 75th percentile of the laboratory norm. In two cases it was due to coexisting spina bifida and in one case due to omphalocele. In 28 amniotic fluid samples AFP concentration exceeded normal level and electrophoresis of AchE revealed additional band. In 26 cases increased values of AFP were due to open neural tube defect in the fetus: 13 cases of anencephaly and 13 cases of spina bifida; in the remaining two other cases omphalocele was found.

RESUMEN

In the period 1990-1991 483 prenatal diagnosis were carried out. Of those in 111 (23%) the technique of early amniocentesis was used, i.e. between 12th and 14th weeks of gestation. In 23 cases the result of cytogenetical diagnosis was positive. The time necessary for obtaining the result did not differ from that of amniocentesis performed at 15-20 weeks of gestation. The cytogenetical examination was successful in all cases of early amniocentesis.
