RESUMEN

A pilot study was performed to evaluate the potential of an inert self-supported immersed fixed film media to upgrade aerated lagoons. Simultaneous organic matter removal and nitrification was assessed under different loading rates and temperatures (near 0 °C) using 12 laboratory-scale reactors operated in parallel. Test results showed that both the temperature and the load have an influence on organic matter effluent concentrations. Effluent quality seemed related to the observed biofilm thickness. Thicker biofilm is believed to have contributed to biomass detachment and increased particulate organic matter concentrations in the effluent. Simultaneous organic removal and nitrification was obtained at loads above 5 g CBOD5/m2·d. The highest nitrification rate at 0.4 °C was obtained for the smallest load, which showed a nitrification limitation close to freezing point.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To examine variables that contribute to work satisfaction among rehabilitation professionals involved in brain injury rehabilitation. METHOD: One hundred and thirty-three respondents completed a job satisfaction questionnaire and qualitative questions regarding sources of stress and satisfaction in working with individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). RESULTS: Factor analysis yielded four factors relating to intrinsic satisfaction, perceived importance to the organization, organizational support and training support. Although intrinsic satisfaction was significantly related to the three other factors, it was best predicted by training support, particularly training that addressed the management of intrusive and/or aggressive behaviours. Qualitative correlates of both work stress and satisfaction were also identified with respect to personal issues, client-related issues, and organizationally-related issues. CONCLUSIONS: Satisfaction with work in ABI rehabilitation is derived from multiple sources, but it appears to be largely dependent on feeling important to, and valued by, the organization and on the level of support and training provided in the workplace.

RESUMEN

The utility of measures for detecting malingering was evaluated using a simulation design in which half the participants were encouraged to do their best and half were asked to feign head injury. Particular attention was focused on the utility of repeated assessment (intraindividual variability) in discriminating the groups. Participants were tested on three occasions on measures commonly used to detect malingering including a specific symptom validity test (SVT). The results indicated that multiple measures of malingering obtained in single assessment (occasion one) discriminated the groups effectively. In addition, however, intraindividual variability in performance, particularly of indicators from the SVT, provided unique information beyond level of performance. The results suggest that response inconsistency across testing sessions may be a clinically useful measure for the detection of malingering.
