RESUMEN

A series of novel fluoroionophore bearing derivatives of benzo-15-crown-5 were synthesized by the amination of benzo-15-crown-5 followed by condensation with different quinones in the presence of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4 ) and 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]octane. The compounds were characterized by infrared, (1) H and (13) C nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Absorption and fluorescence spectral characteristics of these compounds were studied. It was observed that the anthraquinone derivative was acting as an Hg(2+) ion sensor.

RESUMEN

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(25)H(31)NO(4), contains two independent mol-ecules. In one mol-ecule, the benzene ring and an attached meth-oxy group were refined as disordered over two sets of sites in a 0.65 (4): 0.35 (4) ratio. In both mol-ecules, the central ring of the acridinedione system adopts a flattened boat conformation. The four essentially planar atoms of this ring [maximum deviations = 0.006 (5) Šin both mol-ecules] forms dihedral angles of 86.8 (2) and 87.6 (2)°, respectively, with the major and minor components in the disordered benzene ring and 87.3 (2)° with the benzene ring in the fully ordered mol-ecule. The two outer rings of the acridinedione system adopt sofa conformations in both mol-ecules. In the crystal, N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds form two independent chains along [100]. C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the chains, forming a three-dimensional network.

RESUMEN

Thick films of pure ZnO were obtained by screen-printing technique. Surface functionalized ZnO thick films by Cr(2)O(3) were obtained by dipping pure ZnO thick films into 0.01M aqueous solution of chromium trioxide (CrO(3)). The dipped films were fired at 500 degrees C for 30 min. Upon firing, the CrO(3) would reduce to Cr(2)O(3). Cr(2)O(3)-activated (0.47 mass%) ZnO thick films resulted in LPG sensor. Upon exposure to 100 ppm LPG, the barrier height between Cr(2)O(3) and ZnO grains decreases markedly, leading to a drastic decrease in resistance. The sensor was found to sense LPG at 350 degrees C and no cross sensitivity was observed to other hazardous, polluting and inflammable gases. The quick response ( approximately 18s) and fast recovery ( approximately 42s) are the main features of this sensor. The effects of microstructures and dopant concentrations on the gas sensing performance of the sensor were studied and discussed.

RESUMEN

The first simple and efficient approach towards one step synthesis of 2-amino-5-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-aryl pyrimidines has been developed by three component condensation of aromatic aldehydes, ethyl cyanoacetate and guanidine hydrochloride in alkaline ethanol. The synthesized compounds evaluated for their anti-bacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The some of the compounds showed excellent zone of inhibition against tested bacteria.

RESUMEN

In order to determine the possible role of domestic animals in the outbreak of acute encephalitis associated with Chandipura virus (CPV) among children in Andhra Pradesh in 2003, a serological survey of domestic animals was carried out during the epidemic in July 2003. Out of 180 animal sera from highly affected areas of the Karimnagar and Warangal districts of Andhra Pradesh 33 (18.3%) had virus neutralizing (VN) antibodies to CPV. The positive animals consisted of pigs (30.6%), buffalos (17.9%), cattle (14.3%), goats (9.3%) and sheep (7.7%). Isolation of CPV and detection of CPV antibodies in patients with encephalitis reported earlier and the evidence of antibodies to CPV in domestic animals shown here suggest that CPV circulates in this region and should be considered an emerging virus of public health importance.

RESUMEN

A 3.5-year-old child developed a tight oesophageal stricture following ingestion of caustic soda. At the end of the fourth anaesthetic for oesophageal dilatation, laryngospasm and difficulty in mask ventilation was followed by cyanosis, bradycardia, and cardiac arrest. Chest X ray showed a large pneumopericardium, which was immediately aspirated, but unfortunately resuscitation was unsuccessful. It was presumed that during attempted manual ventilation of the lungs in the presence of a closed glottis, air had been accidentally forced into the pericardium through a small tear in the fragile oesophagus.

RESUMEN

Histopathological and biochemical effects of gossypol acetate (GA) on pituitary-gonadal axis were investigated. 10 and 25 mg GA/kg were administered orally to sexually mature adult male Wistar rats for 4 and 5 weeks, respectively. STH and LTH/PRL cells showed no significant changes as compared to those of controls while TSH cells showed hypertrophy, hyperplasia and degranulation in both experimental groups. Pituitary FSH, LH/ICSH cells showed progressive regression. Gonosomatic indices of sex accessory glands at 25 mg showed significant reduction in the experimental animals as compared to those of controls. The diameter of seminiferous tubules reduced and azoospermia developed. Sertoli and Leydig cells also regressed. At 10 and 25 mg GA treatment, spermatogenesis ceased at secondary spermatocytes and spermatogonia stages, respectively. Epididymis and prostate regressed. Seminal vesicle showed no significant histological variations as compared to that of control except reduction in secretion. Biochemical observations revealed increased levels of acid phosphatase, fructose and citric acid and significant reduction in glycerylphosphoryl choline in reproductive glands of both experimental groups as compared to those of controls. Possible mechanism of antifertility action of GA is discussed.

RESUMEN

Histopathological effects of gossypol acetate (GA) on pituitary-adrenal axis in male Wistar rats were investigated. Sexually mature rats of proven fertility were administered orally with 10 and 25 mg/kg for 4 and 5 weeks, respectively. In both experimental groups, corticotrophs (ACTH cells) of anterior pituitary showed progressive regression. At the 10 mg low-dose treatment for 4 weeks, no significant changes were observed in all the zones of the adrenal gland, while at the same dose for 5 weeks of treatment, cells of zona glomerulosa showed hypertrophy and degranulation as compared to that of control. Cells of zona fasciculata and reticularis showed no significant changes. In the medulla, the thickly granulated cells were degranulated and reduced in number. At the 25 mg treatment, the cells of the zona fasciculata showed hypertrophy and degranulation. The possible mechanism of action of GA is discussed.

RESUMEN

A variety of enzymes have been found to acylate sucrose in anhydrous pyridine. The enzymic reaction is highly selective; with trifluoroethylbutyrate as ester donor, enzyme-catalyzed transesterification of sucrose yielded sucrose 1'-butyrate and sucrose 6, 1'-dibutyrate. No sucrose-tributyrates were formed. Using a similar technique, a long-chain linear sucrose polyester has been prepared using Proleather, an alkaline protease from a Bacillus sp. This protease catalyzes the esterification of sucrose with bis(2, 2, 2-trifluoroethyladipate) in a 1:1 ratio to yield a sucrose-containing polyester with M(w) = 2100 and M(n) = 1600 for a polydispersity of 1. 31. Polymers with molecular weights in excess of 13, 000 have been prepared by this enzymic approach, indicating that molecules containing over 30 sucrose units have been produced. The polyester is extremely water soluble and soluble in polar organic solvents. As with the sucrose dibutyrate, the polyester has ester linkages at the C6 and C1' positions on the sucrose. The polyester can be depolymerized using Proleather in aqueous buffer, pH7. After 9 days in aqueous buffer, Proleather catalyzed the breakdown of the polyester to an M(w) of ca. 900. This sucrose-containing polyester may have applications as a water-absorbent, biodegradable plastic for use as diapers and hygienic products, water-treatment chemicals, and components of drug delivery systems.
