RESUMEN

In this work, we propose a practical method that can combine the two functionalities of dental panoramic and cone-beam CT (CBCT) features in one by using a single panoramic detector. We implemented a CS-based reconstruction algorithm for the proposed method and performed a systematic simulation to demonstrate its viability for 3D dental X-ray imaging. We successfully reconstructed volumetric images of considerably high accuracy by using a panoramic detector having an active area of 198.4 mm × 6.4 mm and evaluated the reconstruction quality as a function of the pitch (p) and the angle step (Δθ). Our simulation results indicate that the CS-based reconstruction almost completely recovered the phantom structures, as in CBCT, for p≤2.0 and θ≤6°, indicating that it seems very promising for accurate image reconstruction even for large-pitch and few-view data. We expect the proposed method to be applicable to developing a cost-effective, volumetric dental X-ray imaging system.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We compared the efficacy of remifentanil, alfentanil and fentanyl in reducing withdrawal movement associated with the injection of rocuronium in children. METHODS: In total, 164 ASA physical status I or II pediatric patients, aged 1-14 years, were randomly assigned to four treatment groups: group C received saline; group R, remifentanil 1 microg/kg; group A, alfentanil 10 micro/kg; and group F, fentanyl 2 microg/kg. Treatments were injected over 30 s, followed by thiopental 5 mg/kg. At 90 s after the start of the study drug injection, rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg was injected over 10 s. The patient's response to the injection of rocuronium was graded on a four-point scale in a double-blinded manner. RESULTS: The incidence of withdrawal movement was 89.5% in group C, 70.3% in group F, 36.3% in group A and 7.2% in group R. The incidence of generalized movement (grade 4) was 86.9% in group C, 58.5% in group F, 15.9% in group A and 2.4% in group R. CONCLUSION: Remifentanil, alfentanil and fentanyl all reduced the incidence of withdrawal movement when administered 90 s before the injection of rocuronium compared with saline. Remifentanil was the most effective, followed by alfentanil. Fentanyl was less effective but significantly different from the saline in reducing withdrawal movement in children.

RESUMEN

A developmental pattern of understanding interpersonal forgiveness is proposed and examined with 30 junior high and 30 college students in Seoul, Korea. Three questions are asked: Does the developmental sequence in understanding forgiveness relate to age? Is there a relation between the understanding of forgiveness and the degree of forgiveness offered to one's offending friend? Is there a relation between the way people understand forgiveness and how they go about restoring an actual friendship in conflict? All participants had serious and unfair conflicts with their close friends during the past 5 to 6 months. Results support a developmental sequence in Korea and the observed relation between the sequence and actual friendship restoration strategies. There was at least partial statistical support for the relation between understanding forgiveness and the participants' forgiving behaviour in real life situations. Implications are drawn for the study and implementation of forgiveness in adolescents.

RESUMEN

Using immunochemical and immunohistochemical methods, the binding site of Anguilla anguilla agglutinin (AAA) was characterized and compared with the related fucose-specific lectin from Ulex europaeus (UEA-I). In solid-phase enzyme-linked immunoassays, the two lectins recognized Fuc alpha 1-2Gal beta-HSA. AAA additionally cross-reacted with neoglycolipids bearing lacto-N-fucopentaose (LNFP) I [H type 1] and II [Le(a)] and lactodifucotetraose (LDFT) as glycan moieties. UEA-I, on the other hand, bound to a LDFT-derived neoglycolipid but not to the other neoglycolipids tested. Binding of AAA to gastric mucin was competitively neutralized by Le(a)-specific monoclonal antibodies. UEA-I binding, on the other hand, was reduced after co-incubation with H type 2- and Le(y)-specific monoclonal antibodies. According to our results, AAA reacts with fucosylated type 1 chain antigens, whereas UEA-I binds only to the alpha 1-2-fucosylated LDFT-derived neoglycolipid. In immunohistochemical studies, the reactivity of AAA and UEA-I in normal pyloric mucosa from individuals with known Lewis and secretor status was analysed. AAA showed a broad reaction in the superficial pyloric mucosa from secretors and non-secretors, but AAA reactivity was more pronounced in Le(a+b-) individuals. On the other hand, UEA-I stained the superficial pyloric mucosa only from secretor individuals. A staining of deep mucous glands by the lectins was found in all specimens. Both reacted with most human carcinomas of different origin. Slight differences in their binding pattern were observed and may be explained by the different fine-specificities of the lectins.

RESUMEN

An immunomorphological and immunochemical study was performed to elucidate the pattern of carbohydrate antigens and their relationships to the cluster differentiation (CD) 68 epitopes on macrophages derived from human bone marrow and milk. Core and backbone antigens recognized by lectins from Bauhinia purpurea (BPA), Helix pomatia (HPA), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), Glycine max. (SBA), Griffonia simplicifolia (GSA-I-B4), Lycopersicon esculentum (LEA) and Erythrina cristagalli (ECA) were expressed by both macrophage populations. Additionally, they exhibited various peripheral type 1 and type 2 carbohydrate antigens. In bone marrow trephine biopsies, the number of macrophages stained by the CD68-specific monoclonal antibody PG-M1 exceeded significantly (range 30-40%) the subpopulation expressing SBA, GSA-I-B4, and ECA binding sites as well as the Lewisa antigen. This result is very interesting since, from in vitro studies GSA-I-B4 and SBA are known to react especially with activated macrophages. Western blotting experiments on milk macrophage lysates revealed that ECA, GSA-I-B4, BPA, PNA and MAA visualize a 110 kDa band isographic with the CD68 antigen detected by PG-M1, KP1 and Ki-M1P monoclonal antibodies. These antibodies recognize peptide epitopes as shown by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays after biochemical modification of milk macrophage lysates. This result is in keeping with the assumption that the CD68 antigen consists of a highly glycosylated mucin-type glycoprotein comprising various differentiation-dependent epitopes.

RESUMEN

We have treated 75 cases of spinal tuberculosis with chemotherapy as outpatients. The drugs used were INH, rifampicin and ethambutol for the 48 adults, and INH, rifampicin and PAS for the 27 children. No operations, apart from the evacuation of large abscesses, were carried out. Every patient was followed up for at least three years and the outcome was judged to be favourable in 95%. This is better than in some series in which radical surgery has been used. Although we recognize the advantages of operation in certain circumstances, we believe that our conservative regimen can be confidently recommended for use in less privileged countries, where adequate facilities for hospital treatment may not be available.
