RESUMEN

The surface pattern of the small intestine of the chicken was studied using SEM in stages ranging from 11th day of foetal development to 60 days of post-natal life. The definite villi of the small intestine were preceded by the development of the previllous ridges. The villi were finger like and of unequal length during incubation. After hatching, gradually, the villi were longer, well formed with furrows along their sides. Respectively, the crypts, being present at late incubation, increased with age. Columnar epithelial cells with dense microvilli lined the luminal surface of the intestine with obvious goblet cells openings among them.

RESUMEN

The surface pattern of the caeca of the chicken was examined using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) in stages ranging from 11th day of foetal development to 60 days of post-natal life. During incubation the proximal region (basis) of the caecum presented a few irregular elevations, which were later regarded as villi and after hatching, gradually, became longer and wider. These structures were found to be similar to those of the small intestine. The middle (corpus) and distal (apex) regions of caecum presented ridges/folds with short and blunt villi that were even shorter in the apex. The ridges/folds were running longitudinally the inner surface of the corpus while those of the apex were not so well developed.

RESUMEN

The surface pattern of the large intestine mucosa (caecum and colon) of the rabbit was examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), in stages ranging from 26 days of foetal to 24 days of post-natal life. It was composed of villi in the foetus and in 1-day-old rabbit. By the 16th day of life these villi were replaced by ridges.

RESUMEN

The surface pattern of the stomach and the small intestine of the rabbit was examined using SEM in stages ranging from 26 day of foetal to 24 days of post-natal life. The stomach glands were evident in the late foetuses and became gradually deeper after birth. The villi of the small intestine appeared to have a gradual development during foetal and post-natal life, being short and thick with rounded tips during foetal life while becoming long, slender and finger-like with increasing age.

RESUMEN

The distribution of alkaline phosphatase in normal duodenal, jejunal, ileal and large intestinal mucosa of the rabbit has been studied by histochemical method. New Zealand White rabbits were used ranging from 26-day-old foetuses to 43-day-old young and the findings of ALP-ase reaction are discussed and correlated in connection to age and change of nutrition.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was the evaluation of the usefulness of nuclear morphometry in the pathology of renal cell carcinoma by computer-aided image analysis and the statistical comparison of nuclear morphometric parameters with the histologic grade of the tumors. 44 cases of renal cell carcinoma, classified by two independent pathologists into 4 histologic grades (I-IV), were examined. The following 5 nuclear morphometric parameters were measured in a large number of randomly selected nuclei of each case: Major axis length, area, elongation, roundness and compactness. The statistical evaluation was performed using one-way analysis of variance between the four groups of the histologic grades (I-IV). Between them, there was a statistically very significant difference of the mean value of all the evaluated parameters. The values of the estimated parameters, with the exception of roundness and compactness, showed a strong tendency to increase in proportion to histologic grade. Our results suggest that image analysis is a reproducible and objective method for the grading of renal cell carcinoma, and it can be helpful in the unbiased evaluation of such tumors.

RESUMEN

A case report is given of a 44 year old woman who had a glomus tumor of the stomach, and literature is reviewed. Clinical symptoms are uncharacteristic and may resemble symptoms of most benign or malignant gastric diseases. Preoperative diagnosis of the tumor seems to be difficult. For this reason immediate section for microscopic examination under surgery seems to be appropriate, allowing enough tissue to be removed. Patient age is between 18-98 years, incidence being highest in the 4th to 6th decade. Male and female patients are afflicted equally. This rare tumor of the stomach usually arises in the antrum or pyloric region, in most cases at the greater curvature and is considered to be benign. Treatment is local excision.

RESUMEN

In this communication, we present a case of malignant melanoma of the cornea, in an 80-year old female. The tumor, covering 3/4 of the cornea, had a lobulated appearance, pinkish colour with vascularization and pigment granules, in a few places. The limbal area was free of tumor. Histologic examination indicated that the melanoma was primary, of the epithelioid type, with a few areas of spindle type cells.
