Eutrophic shallow lakes are generally considered as a contributor to the emission of nitrous oxide (N2O), while regional and global estimates have remained imprecise. This due to a lack of data and insufficient understanding of the multiple contributing factors. This study characterized the spatiotemporal variability in N2O concentrations and N2O diffusive fluxes and the contributing factors in Lake Wuliangsuhai, a typical shallow eutrophic and seasonally frozen lake in Inner Mongolia with cold and arid climate. Dissolved N2O concentrations of the lake exhibited a range of 4.5 to 101.2 nmol/L, displaying significant spatiotemporal variations. The lowest and highest concentrations were measured in summer and winter, respectively. The spatial distribution of N2O flux was consistent with that of N2O concentrations. Additionally, the hotspots of N2O emissions were detected within close to the main inflow of lake. The wide spatial and temporal variation in N2O emissions indicate the complexity and its relative importance of factors influencing emissions. N2O emissions in different lake zones and seasons were regulated by diverse factors. Factors influencing the spatial and temporal distribution of N2O concentrations and fluxes were identified as WT, WD, DO, Chl-a, SD and COD. Interestingly, the same factor demonstrated opposing effects on N2O emission in various seasons or zones. This research improves our understanding of N2O emissions in shallow eutrophic lakes in cold and arid areas.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex pathological condition that involves disrupted carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism in the human body, and is a major risk factor for several chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease. While the exact pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome is not yet fully understood, there is increasing evidence linking mitochondrial dysfunction, which is closely related to the mitochondrial genome and mitochondrial dynamics, to the development of this condition. Recent advancements in genetic sequencing technologies have allowed for more accurate detection of mtDNA mutations and other mitochondrial abnormalities, leading to earlier diagnosis and intervention in patients with metabolic syndrome. Additionally, the identification of specific mechanisms by which reduced mtDNA copy number and gene mutations, as well as abnormalities in mtDNA-encoded proteins and mitochondrial dynamics, contribute to metabolic syndrome may promote the development of novel therapeutic targets and interventions, such as the restoration of mitochondrial function through the targeting of specific mitochondrial defects. Additionally, advancements in genetic sequencing technologies may allow for more accurate detection of mtDNA mutations and other mitochondrial abnormalities, leading to earlier diagnosis and intervention in patients with MetS. Therefore, strategies to promote the restoration of mitochondrial function by addressing these defects may offer new options for treating MetS. This review provides an overview of the research progress and significance of mitochondrial genome and mitochondrial dynamics in MetS.

Pine wilt disease (PWD), a destructive disease for pine trees, is caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and additional bacteria. In this study, extracts of Zostera marina showed a high nematicidal activity against PWN and some of the bacteria that it carries. Light yellow crystals were obtained from extracts of Z. marina through solvent extraction, followed by chromatography on AB-8 resin and crystallization. The NMR and HPLC analysis showed that the isolated compound was rosmarinic acid (RosA). RosA showed effective nematicidal activity, of which the LC50 (50% lethal concentration) to PWN at 24 h, 48 h and 72 h was 1.18 mg/g, 1.05 mg/g and 0.95 mg/g, respectively. To get a high yield rate of RosA from Z. marina, single factor experiments and an L9 (34) orthogonal experiment were performed. This extraction process involved 70% ethanol for 3 h at 40 °C. The extraction dosage was 1:50 (w/v). The highest yield of RosA from Zostera was 3.13 mg/g DW (dried weight). The crude extracts of Zostera marina (10 mg/mL) and RosA (1 mg/mL) also showed inhibitory effects to some bacterial strains carried by PWN: Klebsiella sp., Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Streptomyces sp. and Pantoea agglomerans. The results of these studies provide clues for preparing pesticide to control PWD from Z. marina.
