RESUMEN

The peptic-tryptic-cotazym (PTC) digest, obtained from bread wheat gliadin by simulating in vivo protein digestion, was more active than the PTC-digest of durum wheat gliadin in reversibly inhibiting HEp-2 cell proliferation and in increasing cellular acid phosphatase. Colony-forming ability of the cells was not affected by treatment with both bread or durum wheat gliadin peptides. The peptic-tryptic (PT) digest of bread wheat gliadin also showed agglutinating activity of HEp-2 cells.

RESUMEN

A mathematical model of iron metabolism is presented. It comprises the following iron pools within the body: transferrin-bound iron in the plasma, iron in circulating red cells and their bone marrow precursors, iron in mucosal, parenchymal and reticuloendothelial cells. The control exerted by a hormone, called erythropoietin, on bone marrow utilization of iron for hemoglobin synthesis is taken into account. The model so obtained consists of a system of functional differential equations of retarded type. Most model parameters can be estimated from radiotracer experiments, others can be measured and numerical values can be assigned to the remaining ones making few reasonable assumptions according to the available physiological knowledge. Iron metabolism behavior under different therapeutical treatments was stimulated. Model predictions were compared to experimental data collected in clinical routine.

RESUMEN

PIP: The thermal curve is the most accurate and most widely employed indirect method for determining ovulation occurrence and can readily be used in birth control. The theoretical premises, practical means of application, and psychological effects of the method are discussed based on 360 cases (mainly consultancy) observed over a 10-year period. The method is reliable harmless, cheap, and relatively simple, and is theoretically available to 90% of all fertile women. Its wider use is, however, impeded by the lack of expert teachers, certain technical difficulties, and the impossibility of its use during lactation, and by the need for periodic continence on the part of both partners. This presupposes mutual understanding and a degree of sexual education few possess. Where these prerequisites are satisfied, however, the method restores a fully human meaning to the concept of conjugal intimacy, making it a source of equilibrium and distension. It also plays an important part in favoring the reciprocal attractiveness and the richness of the lovemaking act on the part of the couple. It is recognized that no universally sound method of birth control exists, since the degree of acceptability of any method is conditioned by many factors. The natural method, though, far from disturbing sexual equilibrium is of positive value in bringing out the true value of the conjugal bond and in leading to the integral development of the personalities of both partners.
