BACKGROUND: Despite advances in screening and therapy, breast cancer (BC) remains the predominant cancer in women globally. Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) is pivotal in carcinogenesis across various cancers, including BC. Evidence indicates that miR-1307-3p is upregulated in BC tumors, yet its target genes are not fully elucidated. This study aimed to explore how miR-1307-3p regulates BC proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis and to identify potential target genes. METHODS: Basal miR-1307-3p levels were quantified in BC cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, as well as MCF-10A using quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-qPCR). The impact of miR-1307-3p inhibition on BC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis was assessed. Nine miRNA-target prediction databases identified potential miR-1307-3p targets. Target expression was validated using RT-qPCR, Western blot, and dual-luciferase reporter assays. MiR-1307-3p was overexpressed in MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 compared to MCF-10A. RESULTS: Inhibiting miR-1307-3p significantly reduced BC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. Bioinformatics analysis identified 17 potential miR-1307-3p targets, with protamine 2 (PRM2) overexpression confirmed via Western blot and dual-luciferase assays. CONCLUSION: MiR-1307-3p overexpression in BC promotes proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. PRM2 emerges as a novel miR-1307-3p target in BC.

Background: Dynapenic obesity (DO) is the coexistence of excess adipose tissue/body weight and low muscle strength. This condition is associated with an increased risk of suffering from various chronic diseases and physical deterioration in older people. Aim: To analyze the association between DO phenotypes and physical performance in middle-aged women living in the community. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on middle-aged and older women (≥50 years) residing in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Dynapenia was diagnosticated by a handgrip strength (HGS) < 16 kg; obesity was determined based on body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2. Participants were categorized into four groups based on their dynapenia and obesity status: non-dynapenic/non-obesity (ND/NO), obesity/non-dynapenic (O/ND), dynapenic/non-obesity (D/NO) and dynapenic/obesity (D/O). Physical performance was assessed by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Results: A total of 171 women were assessed. The median (IQR) age of the sample was 72.0 (17.0) years. Obesity and dynapenia were 35% (n = 60) and 57.8% (n = 99) of the participants, respectively. The prevalence of ND/NO was 25.1% (n = 43), O/ND 17% (n = 29), D/NO 39.8% (n = 68) and DO 18.1% (n = 31). The mean SPPB total score was 6.5 ± 3.2. Participants of D/NO and DO groups presented significantly lower mean SPPB scores (p < 0.001) compared to those of NO/ND and O/ND groups. Conclusion: Women with DO and D/NO exhibited significantly lower SPPB scores, indicating poorer physical performance. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating a comprehensive assessment of muscle strength and obesity in middle-aged and older women.

Introduction/Objectives: Several studies have documented the development and persistence of symptoms related to COVID-19 and its secondary complications up to 12 months after the infection. We aimed to identify the medical complications following COVID-19 infection in the Indigenous Zapotec population of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region in Oaxaca, Mexico. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analytical study that included 90 Indigenous Zapotec participants (30 males and 60 females) from the Tehuantepec region, Oaxaca, Mexico, who had an infectious process due to SARS-CoV-2. Sociodemographic and clinical data were identified through questionnaires. Results: Among the 201 participants, 90 individuals (66.7% women, 33.3% men) had contracted COVID-19. Out of these, 61 individuals reported persistent symptoms post-infection, with a mean symptom duration of 13.87 months. The results show significant variations in symptom duration based on age, marital status, educational attainment, vaccination status, and blood group. The most commonly reported symptoms included a dry cough, fever, myalgia, fatigue, headache, and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: This study highlights the post-COVID-19 symptoms and their prevalence within a specific sample of the Indigenous Zapotec population in Oaxaca, along with the sociodemographic and clinical factors influencing the duration of these symptoms. It underscores the necessity of personalized recovery strategies and highlights the critical role of vaccination in mitigating the long-term impacts of SARS-CoV-2.

The cytosolic enzymes N-Acetyl Transferases 1 and 2 (NATs) transfer an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to a xenobiotic substrate. NATs are regulated at the genetic and epigenetic levels by deacetylase enzymes such as sirtuins. The enzymatic expression of NAT1, NAT2, and SIRT1 was evaluated by flow cytometry, as well as the enzymatic activity of NATs by cell culture and HPLC analysis. Six SNPs were determined through genotyping. T2D patients (n = 29) and healthy subjects (n = 25) with a median age of 57 and 50, respectively, were recruited. An increased enzyme expression and a diminished NAT2 enzymatic activity were found in cells of T2D patients compared to the control group, while NAT1 was negatively correlated with body fat percentage and BMI. In contrast, Sirtuin inhibition increased NAT2 activity, while Sirtuin agonism decreased its activity in both groups. The analysis of NAT2 SNPs showed a higher frequency of rapid acetylation haplotypes in T2D patients compared to the control group, possibly associated as a risk factor for diabetes. The enzymatic expression of CD3+NAT2+ cells was higher in the rapid acetylators group compared to the slow acetylators group. The levels and activity of NAT1 were associated with total cholesterol and triglycerides. Meanwhile, CD3+NAT2+ cells and NAT2 activity levels were associated with HbA1c and glucose levels. The results indicate that NAT2 could be involved in metabolic processes related to the development of T2D, due to its association with glucose levels, HbA1c, and the altered SIRT-NAT axis. NAT1 may be involved with dyslipidaemias in people who are overweight or obese.

BACKGROUND: Protein interactions participate in many molecular mechanisms involved in cellular processes. The human TATA box binding protein (hTBP) interacts with Antennapedia (Antp) through its N-terminal region, specifically via its glutamine homopeptides. This PolyQ region acts as a binding site for other transcription factors under normal conditions, but when it expands, it generates spinocerebellar ataxia 17 (SCA17), whose protein aggregates in the brain prevent its correct functioning. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the hTBP glutamine-rich region is involved in its interaction with homeoproteins and the role it plays in the formation of protein aggregates in SCA17. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We characterized hTBP interaction with other homeoproteins using BiFC, and modeled SCA17 in Drosophila melanogaster by targeting hTBPQ80 to the fly brain using UAS/GAL4. RESULTS: There was hTBP interaction with homeoproteins through its glutamine-rich region, and hTBP protein aggregates with expanded glutamines were found to affect the locomotor capacity of flies. CONCLUSIONS: The study of hTBP interactions opens the possibility for the search for new therapeutic strategies in neurodegenerative pathologies such as SCA17.

Esta región PolyQ sirve como sitio de unión a factores de transcripción en condiciones normales, pero cuando se expande genera la ataxia espinal cerebelosa 17 (SCA17), cuyos agregados proteicos en el cerebro impiden su funcionamiento correcto. OBJETIVO: Determinar si la región rica en glutaminas de hTBP interviene en su interacción con homeoproteínas y el papel que tiene en la formación de agregados proteicos en SCA17. Resumen (analítico) Existe insuficiente evidencia acerca de lo que significa ser cuidador de niños o niñas con parálisis cerebral en Colombia. Nuestra investigación se aborda desde un enfoque hermenéutico, utilizando el método de la teoría fundamentada, con 13 entrevistas semiestructuradas a adultos cuidadores de niños y niñas con parálisis cerebral. Emergen cuatro categorías: amor incondicional, cuidando como mujer, atravesando el duelo e interminable lucha por los derechos del menor. Se concluye que existe una decidida forma de afrontamiento de las cuidadoras, pues están dispuestas a renunciar a sus propias vidas, a sus relaciones personales y sociales, a sufrir un constante duelo, a aprender nuevas formas de cuidar y transformar sus hogares, hasta luchar por la atención digna de sus hijos. El amor sin condiciones les permite reconocerse como mujeres cuidadoras únicas.
Abstract (analytical) There is insufficient evidence regarding meanings developed by caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy in Colombia. The methodology involved adopting a hermeneutic approach, which was combined with the grounded theory method. A total of 13 semi-structured interviews were conducted with adult caregivers of children with cerebral palsy. Following an analysis of the results, four categories emerged: unconditional love; caring as a woman; experiencing grief; and the endless fight for their child's rights. It was concluded that the caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy have developed determined coping skills. This is because they are willing to give up their own lives, sacrifice their personal and social relationships, experience constant grief and learn new ways of caring and transforming their homes in their struggle to provide dignified care for their children. Unconditional love allows these caregivers to recognize themselves as unique caring women.
Resumo (analítico) Não há evidências suficientes sobre o que significa ser cuidador de crianças com paralisia cerebral na Colômbia. Pesquisa abordada a partir de uma abordagem hermenêutica, utilizando como método da teoria fundamentada, com 13 entrevistas semiestruturadas com adultos cuidadores de crianças com paralisia cerebral. Emergem quatro categorias: amor incondicional, cuidado como mulher, vivência do luto e luta incessante pelos direitos da criança. Conclui-se que existe uma determinada forma de enfrentamento para os cuidadores, pois estão dispostos a abdicar de sua própria vida, de suas relações pessoais e sociais, a sofrer lutos constantes, a aprender novas formas de cuidar e transformar seus lares, a lutar por cuidado digno de seus filhos. O amor incondicional permite que elas se reconheçam como mulheres únicas e carinhosas.

Discrepancies between the measurement of body mass index (BMI) and metabolic health status have been described for the onset of metabolic diseases. Studying novel biomarkers, some of which are associated with metabolic syndrome, can help us to understand the differences between metabolic health (MetH) and BMI. A group of 1469 young adults with pre-specified anthropometric and blood biochemical parameters were selected. Of these, 80 subjects were included in the downstream analysis that considered their BMI and MetH parameters for selection as follows: norm weight metabolically healthy (MHNW) or metabolically unhealthy (MUNW); overweight/obese metabolically healthy (MHOW) or metabolically unhealthy (MUOW). Our results showed for the first time the differences when the MetH status and the BMI are considered as global MetH statures. First, all the evaluated miRNAs presented a higher expression in the metabolically unhealthy group than the metabolically healthy group. The higher levels of leptin, IL-1b, IL-8, IL-17A, miR-221, miR-21, and miR-29 are directly associated with metabolic unhealthy and OW/OB phenotypes (MUOW group). In contrast, high levels of miR34 were detected only in the MUNW group. We found differences in the SIRT1-PGC1α pathway with increased levels of SIRT1+ cells and diminished mRNA levels of PGCa in the metabolically unhealthy compared to metabolically healthy subjects. Our results demonstrate that even when metabolic diseases are not apparent in young adult populations, MetH and BMI have a distinguishable phenotype print that signals the potential to develop major metabolic diseases.

Establishing the infant's gut microbiota has long-term implications on health and immunity. Breastfeeding is recognized as the best practice of infant nutrition in comparison with formula feeding. We evaluated the effects of the primary feeding practices by analyzing the infant growth and the potential association with gut diseases. A cross-sectional and observational study was designed. This study included 55 mothers with infants, who were divided according to their feeding practices in breastfeeding (BF), formula feeding (FF), and combined breast and formula feeding (CF). Anthropometric measurements of the participants were recorded. Additionally, non-invasive fecal samples from the infants were collected to analyze the microbiota by sequencing, immunoglobulin A (IgA) concentration (ELISA), and volatile organic compounds (gas chromatography with an electronic nose). Results showed that the microbiota diversity in the BF group was the highest compared to the other two groups. The IgA levels in the BF group were twice as high as those in the FF group. Moreover, the child´s growth in the BF group showed the best infant development when the data were compared at birth to the recollection time, as noted by the correlation with a decreased concentration of toxic volatile organic compounds. Interestingly, the CF group showed a significant difference in health status when the data were compared with the FF group. We conclude that early health practices influence children's growth, which is relevant to further research about how those infants' health evolved.

Hox genes encode transcription factors that play an important role in establishing the basic body plan of animals. In Drosophila, Antennapedia is one of the five genes that make up the Antennapedia complex (ANT-C). Antennapedia determines the identity of the second thoracic segment, known as the mesothorax. Misexpression of Antennapedia at different developmental stages changes the identity of the mesothorax, including the muscles, nervous system, and cuticle. In Drosophila, Antennapedia has two distinct promoters highly regulated throughout development by several transcription factors. Antennapedia proteins are found with other transcription factors in different ANTENNAPEDIA transcriptional complexes to regulate multiple subsets of target genes. In this review, we describe the different mechanisms that regulate the expression and function of Antennapedia and the role of this Hox gene in the development of Drosophila.

wingless expression is exquisitely regulated by different factors and enhancers in the imaginal wing discs of Drosophila melanogaster in four domains: the dorsal band, the dorso-ventral boundary, and the inner and outer ring domains. tonalli is a trithorax group gene that encodes a putative SUMO E3 ligase that binds to chromatin to regulate the expression of its targets, including the Hox genes. However, its role in modulating gene expression is barely known. Here, we show that TnaA modulates the wingless expression at two domains of the wing disc, the dorso-ventral boundary and the inner ring. At first, tonalli interacts genetically with Notch to form the wing margin. In the inner ring domain, TnaA modulates wingless transcription. When the dosage of TnaA increases in or near the inner ring since early larval stages, this domain expands with a rapid increase in wingless expression. TnaA occupies the wingless Inner Ring Enhancer at the wing disc, meanwhile it does not affect wingless expression directed by the Ventral Disc Enhancer in leg discs, suggesting that TnaA acts as a wingless enhancer-specific factor. We describe for the first time the presence of TnaA at the Inner Ring Enhancer as a specific regulator of wingless in the development of wing boundaries.

Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies allow the evaluation of the relationship between structural chemical changes and biological activity. Fluoroquinolones have chemical characteristics that allow their structure to be modified and new analogs with different therapeutic properties to be generated. The objective of this research is to identify and select the C-7 heterocycle fluoroquinolone analog (FQH 1-5) with antibacterial activity similar to the reference fluoroquinolone through in vitro, in silico, and in vivo evaluations. First, SAR analysis was conducted on the FQH 1-5, using an in vitro antimicrobial sensibility model in order to select the best compound. Then, an in silico model mechanism of action analysis was carried out by molecular docking. The non-bacterial cell cytotoxicity was evaluated, and finally, the antimicrobial potential was determined by an in vivo model of topical infection in mice. The results showed antimicrobial differences between the FQH 1-5 and Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, identifying the 7-benzimidazol-1-yl-fluoroquinolone (FQH-2) as the most active against S. aureus. Suggesting the same mechanism of action as the other fluoroquinolones; no cytotoxic effects on non-bacterial cells were found. FQH-2 was demonstrated to decrease the amount of bacteria in infected wound tissue.

BACKGROUND: Intravascular venous (VUC) or arterial (AUC) umbilical catheter placement is the most frequent invasive procedure in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Either Wright's or Shukla's formula is used to introduce the catheters. However, Shukla's formula is associated with incorrect insertion, especially for newborns < 1500 g. This study aimed to determine by chest X-ray if Wright's formula is better than Shukla's formula for the correct placement of umbilical catheters in newborns ≤ 1500 g. METHODS: We included patients admitted to the NICU of a secondary-level hospital between 2021-2022 who received VUC or AUC through the Wright or Shukla formulas. RESULTS: A total of 129 newborns were included: 78 with VUC and 51 with AUC. In VUC, 50% with Wright and 36.8% with Shukla formulas had the correct location, (p = 0.24). In AUC, 56.6 % with Wright and 52.4% with Shukla formulas were placed correctly placed, (p = 0.76). VUC with weight < 1000 g were correctly placed in 36.4% with Wright and 33.3% with Shukla formulas (p = 0.58). VUC in newborns > 1000 g were correctly placed in 66.6% with Wright and 38.4% with Shukla formulas (p = 0.065). AUC in newborns < 1000 g were correctly placed in 45% using Wright and 42.9% Shukla formulas (p = 0.63). AUC in newborns > 1000 g were correctly placed in 80% using Wright and 57.1% Shukla formulas (p = 0.23). CONCLUSIONS: We found 13% more correctly placed VUC using Wright's formula. Moreover, Wright's formula was 29% above Shukla's VUC placement in neonates > 1000 g, although there was no significant difference due to the sample size.
INTRODUCCIÓN: La colocación de catéteres intravasculares venosos umbilicales (CVU) y arteriales (CAU) es el procedimiento invasivo más frecuente en la unidad de cuidados intensivos neonatales (UCIN). Para introducirlos se utilizan las fórmulas de Wright y de Shukla, aunque esta última podría estar asociada con una inserción incorrecta, especialmente en neonatos < 1500 g. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar mediante radiografía de tórax cuál fórmula es mejor para la correcta colocación de catéteres umbilicales en recién nacidos ≤ 1500 g. MÉTODOS: Se incluyeron los pacientes ingresados en la UCIN de un hospital de segundo nivel entre 2021-2022 que recibieron CVU o CAU mediante las fórmulas de Wrigth o Shukla. RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron en total 129 recién nacidos: 78 CVU y 51 CAU. En CVU, Wright 50% y Shukla 36.8% tuvieron localización correcta, p = 0.24. En las CAU, Wright 56.6% y Shukla 52.4% tenían una ubicación correcta, p = 0.76. En CVU con peso < 1000 g, Wright 36.4% y Shukla 33.3% bien situados, p = 0.58. En CVU > 1000 g, Wright 66.6% y Shukla 38.4% bien situados, p = 0.065. En CAU < 1000 g, Wright 45% y Shukla 42.9%, p = 0.63. En CAU con peso > 1000 g, Wright 80% y Shukla 57.1%, p = 0.23. CONCLUSIONES: La colocación del CVU fue 13% mejor con la fórmula de Wright. La fórmula de Wright superó en el 29% la colocación del CVU en los neonatos > 1000 g en comparación con la de Shukla, aunque no hubo diferencia significativa debido al tamaño de la muestra.

INTRODUCTION: Colombia has 50,912,429 inhabitants, but only 50-70% of the population can effectively access health care services. The emergency room (ER) is a main contributor to the in-hospital care system since up to half of the admissions come through it. Telemedicine has become a tool to facilitate effective access to health care services, improve the timeliness of care, reduce diagnostic variability, and reduce costs associated with health. The aim of this study is to describe the experience of a Distance Emergency Care Program through Telemedicine (TelEmergency) to improve specialist access for patients at the Emergency Room (ER) in low- and medium-level care hospitals in Colombia. METHODS: An observational descriptive study of a cohort including 1,544 patients during the program's first two years was conducted. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the available data. The data are presented with summarized statistics of sociodemographic, clinical, and patient-care variables. RESULTS: The study included a total of 1,544 patients, and the majority were adults between 60 and 79 years of age (n = 491, 32%). More than half were men (n = 832, 54%), and 68% (n = 1,057) belonged to the contributory health care regime. The service was requested from 346 municipalities, 70% (n = 1,076) from intermediate and rural settings. The most common diagnoses were related to COVID-19 (n = 356, 22%), respiratory diseases (n = 217, 14%), and cardiovascular diseases (n = 162, 10%). We observed 44% (n = 681) of local admissions either under observation (n = 53, 3%) or hospitalization (n = 380, 24%), limiting the need for hospital transfers. Program operation data revealed that 50% (n = 799) of requests were answered within two hours by the medical staff. The initial diagnosis was modified in 7% (n = 119) of the patients after being evaluated by specialists at the TelEmergency program. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows the operational data collected during the first two years after the implementation of the TelEmergency program in Colombia, the first of its kind in the country. Its implementation offered specialized timely management of patients at the ER in low- and medium-level care hospitals, where there is no availability of specialized doctors.

This study identified and quantified microplastics in the Bay of Asunción, Paraguay, and its main tributaries. Surface water samples were sieved in duplicate at six locations using stainless-steel sieves (0.3-4.75 mm range), digested employing the Fenton's reaction (Fe-catalysed H2O2 digestion), and floated using NaCl and NaI. Particles were inspected using a microscope and characterized by IR spectrometry. Microplastics were found in all samples; more abundant (p < 0.05) in water from the bay (13.2 ± 13.4 items·m-3) than from the tributaries (1.0 ± 0.5 items·m-3). Most microplastics were common polymers and their abundance was in the order polypropylene > high-density polyethylene > low-density polyethylene, transparent and white. The results were similar to other regional studies and suggested that their main source was single-use packaging, disposed inadequately due to poor garbage collection.

Abstract Background: Intravascular venous (VUC) or arterial (AUC) umbilical catheter placement is the most frequent invasive procedure in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Either Wright's or Shukla's formula is used to introduce the catheters. However, Shukla's formula is associated with incorrect insertion, especially for newborns < 1500 g. This study aimed to determine by chest X-ray if Wright's formula is better than Shukla's formula for the correct placement of umbilical catheters in newborns ≤ 1500 g. Methods: We included patients admitted to the NICU of a secondary-level hospital between 2021-2022 who received VUC or AUC through the Wright or Shukla formulas. Results: A total of 129 newborns were included: 78 with VUC and 51 with AUC. In VUC, 50% with Wright and 36.8% with Shukla formulas had the correct location, (p = 0.24). In AUC, 56.6 % with Wright and 52.4% with Shukla formulas were placed correctly placed, (p = 0.76). VUC with weight < 1000 g were correctly placed in 36.4% with Wright and 33.3% with Shukla formulas (p = 0.58). VUC in newborns > 1000 g were correctly placed in 66.6% with Wright and 38.4% with Shukla formulas (p = 0.065). AUC in newborns < 1000 g were correctly placed in 45% using Wright and 42.9% Shukla formulas (p = 0.63). AUC in newborns > 1000 g were correctly placed in 80% using Wright and 57.1% Shukla formulas (p = 0.23). Conclusions: We found 13% more correctly placed VUC using Wright's formula. Moreover, Wright's formula was 29% above Shukla's VUC placement in neonates > 1000 g, although there was no significant difference due to the sample size.
Resumen Introducción: La colocación de catéteres intravasculares venosos umbilicales (CVU) y arteriales (CAU) es el procedimiento invasivo más frecuente en la unidad de cuidados intensivos neonatales (UCIN). Para introducirlos se utilizan las fórmulas de Wright y de Shukla, aunque esta última podría estar asociada con una inserción incorrecta, especialmente en neonatos < 1500 g. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar mediante radiografía de tórax cuál fórmula es mejor para la correcta colocación de catéteres umbilicales en recién nacidos ≤ 1500 g. Métodos: Se incluyeron los pacientes ingresados en la UCIN de un hospital de segundo nivel entre 2021-2022 que recibieron CVU o CAU mediante las fórmulas de Wrigth o Shukla. Resultados: Se incluyeron en total 129 recién nacidos: 78 CVU y 51 CAU. En CVU, Wright 50% y Shukla 36.8% tuvieron localización correcta, p = 0.24. En las CAU, Wright 56.6% y Shukla 52.4% tenían una ubicación correcta, p = 0.76. En CVU con peso < 1000 g, Wright 36.4% y Shukla 33.3% bien situados, p = 0.58. En CVU > 1000 g, Wright 66.6% y Shukla 38.4% bien situados, p = 0.065. En CAU < 1000 g, Wright 45% y Shukla 42.9%, p = 0.63. En CAU con peso > 1000 g, Wright 80% y Shukla 57.1%, p = 0.23. Conclusiones: La colocación del CVU fue 13% mejor con la fórmula de Wright. La fórmula de Wright superó en el 29% la colocación del CVU en los neonatos > 1000 g en comparación con la de Shukla, aunque no hubo diferencia significativa debido al tamaño de la muestra.

Resumen Objetivo: el objetivo de este estudio fue identificar la implementación del triaje en los servicios de urgencias hospitalarios, posterior a la divulgación de la resolución 5596 de 2015 del Ministerio de Salud de Colombia, en los hospitales de la subregión Suroeste del departamento de Antioquia. Métodos: estudio observacional descriptivo, tipo corte transversal. Se incluyeron los 23 hospitales públicos de los municipios de la subregión suroeste de Antioquia. Se utilizó muestreo no probabilístico, por conveniencia. Los datos se obtuvieron mediante encuesta y técnica de entrevista estructurada. Resultados: la encuesta fue respondida por funcionarios de los hospitales de los 23 municipios del suroeste antioqueño. Sólo 3 instituciones (13 %) tienen una adecuada implementación de resolución 5596 (política de triaje) del ministerio de salud (adherencia a la resolución mayor al 80 %), el 74 % reportaron una adherencia a la resolución > 20 % y ≤ 80 % y 3 instituciones no lograron un porcentaje de adherencia mayor al 20 % a la resolución. Sólo 3 instituciones (13 %) utilizan triaje validado, en otras 3 instituciones (13 %) no saben cuál tipo de triaje usan y en la mayoría de las instituciones (74 %) emplean un triaje no validado internacionalmente. Conclusiones: a pesar de ser una normativa de obligatorio cumplimiento por parte de todos los hospitales del territorio nacional, sólo el 13 % de los hospitales incluidos en el estudio cumplen con los criterios técnicos de la política de triaje del Ministerio de Salud de Colombia.
Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the implementation of triage in emergency wards, after the release of Resolution 5596 of 2015 of the Ministry of Health of Colombia, in the hospitals of the Southwest subregion of the department of Antioquia. Methodology: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. The 23 public hospitals in the municipalities of the southwestern subregion of Antioquia were included. A convenience non-probabilistic sampling was used. The data were obtained through a survey and structured interview technique. Findings: The survey was answered by hospital officials from the 23 municipalities of southwest Antioquia. Only 3 institutions (13%) have an adequate implementation of the triage service (adherence to the resolution greater than 80%), 74% reported adherence to the resolution > 20% and ≤ 80% and 3 institutions do not achieved a percentage of adherence greater than 20% to the resolution. Only 3 institutions (13%) use validated triage, in 3 other institutions (13%) they do not know what type of triage they use and in most institutions (74%) they use a non-validated triage. Conclusions: in spite of being a mandatory regulation for the hospitals of the national territory, only 13% of the hospitals included in the study comply with the technical criteria of triage policy of the Colombian Ministry of Health.

CONTEXT: Periodontitis is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease linked to oral microbiota dysbiosis. This disease progresses to infection that stimulates a host immune/inflammatory response, with progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting structures. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to present a robust critical evaluation of the evidence of salivary protein profiles for identifying oral diseases using proteomic approaches and summarize the use of these approaches to diagnose chronic periodontitis. DATA SOURCES: A systematic literature search was conducted from January 1st, 2010, to December 1st, 2022, based on PICO criteria following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and by searching the three databases Science Direct, Scopus, and Springer Link. STUDY SELECTION: According to the inclusion criteria, eight studies were identified to analyze the proteins identified by proteomics. RESULTS: The protein family S100 was identified as the most abundant in patients with chronic periodontitis. In this family, an increased abundance of S100A8 and S100A9 from individuals with the active disease was observed, which strongly relates to the inflammatory response. Moreover, the ratio S100A8/S100A9 and the metalloproteinase-8 in saliva could differentiate distinct periodontitis groups. The changes in protein profile after non-surgical periodontal therapy improved the health of the buccal area. The results of this systematic review identified a set of proteins that could be used as a complementary tool for periodontitis diagnosis using salivary proteins. CONCLUSION: Biomarkers in saliva can be used to monitor an early stage of periodontitis and the progression of the disease following therapy.
