RESUMEN

It was shown that activation of molecular oxygen by Fe2+ ascorbate causes damage to creatine phosphokinase of rat brain synaptosomes. The creatine phosphokinase inactivation did not correlate with activation of lipid peroxidation in synaptosomes. The enzyme damage was the result of direct interaction with active oxygen species.

RESUMEN

The content of breathing air pentane as in vivo index of lipid peroxidation and electrophysiological parameters (visual evoked potentials and direct current (DC) potential level) of healthy volunteers and patients with senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease following weak stress sound influence were investigated. Unlike healthy subjects correlation between stress-induced changes of pentane level and electrophysiological parameters for patients with psychopathology was shown.

RESUMEN

The processes of lipid peroxidation were studied in healthy subjects and patients with manic-depressive psychosis and schizophrenia using a non-invasive method based on chromatographic determination of endogenic pentane in the expired air. In patients with circular psychosis pentane concentration in the expired air did not differ from the norm, yet with advancing age it decreased (in contrast to an elevation in normal subjects). In schizophrenic patients pentane levels were significantly higher than in age-matched normal subjects. The level of the studied parameter was not correlated with the duration of the disease but showed a definite correlation with the severity of adverse disturbances in schizophrenia.

RESUMEN

In schizophrenic patients, the course of lipid peroxidation (LP) was investigated as indicated by pentane contents in the expired air (gas chromatography) during a course of psychotropic drug therapy. In 80% of the patients LP was activated before the therapy and reduced in its course with the levels in remission comparable to those characteristic of healthy controls. The LP decreased in a "leap-like" manner with episodes far exceeding the control levels. These leaps' rate and the baseline LP increase before therapy positively correlated with severity of the signs of the disease, its duration, and pre-existing level of negative disorders.

RESUMEN

Using gas chromatography the authors have studied the time course of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in patients with manic depressive psychosis (a depressive phase) during a course of antidepressive therapy. The results indicate that the levels of LPO in young patients (up to 30 years) with a disease standing of up to 5 years are significantly higher than in age-matched controls whereas with increasing duration of the disease the levels of this parameter decrease and in elderly patients (over 50 years) with a longer duration of the disease (over 15 years) this parameter is significantly lower than in age-matched controls. A decrease of LPO is particularly pronounced in a bipolar course of manic depressive psychosis.

RESUMEN

It has been demonstrated that the stress associated with an active mental work for 2 hours leads to a high rate of lipid peroxidation which results in a greater amount of products of lipid peroxidation in blood and pentane in exhaled air. Simultaneous measurements of blood catecholamines have shown their significant increase immediately after exposure to the stress effect. It can therefore be concluded that a stress situation enhances lipid peroxidation in the human body.

RESUMEN

Eighteen patients aged 4 to 13 years with Duchenne's progressive muscular dystrophy were examined for the content of lipid peroxidation (LPO) products (lowest volatile hydrocarbons) in the exhaled air. The level of LPO products was found to exceed normal 4-fold as compared to the control group including healthy children of the same age. The maximal increase was detected at the early stages of the disease with a rapid progressive degeneration. The role of LPO in the pathogenesis of Duchenne's muscular dystrophy and possible applications of free radical oxidation inhibitors as new effective medicinal tools are discussed.

RESUMEN

Hyperbaric oxygenation (1 atm. of pure oxygen, 60 min. exposure) resulted in a sharp increase of the endogenous lipoperoxidation level in humans which was evaluated by the pentane content in the exhaled air. That activation of endogenous lipid peroxidation was a short-term process: 2-3-fold increase of pentane content 10 min after exposure to hyperbaric oxygenation and levelling off to control values in 1 hour. It is recommended to use determination of endogenous lipid peroxidation by the pentane content in the exhaled air in order to find optimal regimens of hyperbaric oxygenation.
