RESUMEN

Objective: Given the importance of compassion and cultural humility in healthcare providers, the study aspired to investigate the effects of a brief mindfulness practice on compassion and cultural humility in health professions students. Methods: A quantitative, one-group pre-test/post-test study was conducted with 58 participants from undergraduate health profession education programs in the United States. Participants completed questionnaires measuring mindfulness, compassion, and cultural humility before and after engaging in an eight-minute loving-kindness meditation exercise three to four times per week for two weeks. Results: There were statistically significant increases in mindfulness, compassion, and cultural humility after participants engaged in the brief loving-kindness meditation exercise, with small to moderate effect sizes. Conclusion: Brief mindfulness practices may be helpful for cultivating essential qualities such as compassion and cultural humility in health professions students. Innovation: The findings add to the research gap about the effects of mindfulness on health professions students' compassion and cultural humility. Using mindfulness as a training tool in health professions education may foster compassion, cultural humility, and mindfulness in health professions students who will become healthcare providers, addressing individual health concerns but also broader social issues related to social justice and health equity.

RESUMEN

Effective healthcare communication involves therapeutic communication and intercultural communication, which may be achieved through the practice of cultural humility. A correlational study with 103 health professionals from a hospital network located in the Midwestern United States was completed. The participants completed Foronda's Cultural Humility Scale, the Global Interprofessional Therapeutic Communication Scale Short Form, and the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale. Data analyses indicated moderate positive relationships between cultural humility, therapeutic communication, and intercultural communication, suggesting the role of cultural humility in therapeutic communication and intercultural communication. Cultural humility may promote health professionals' effective healthcare communication with patients from diverse backgrounds. The findings of this study may inform professional development in health professionals.

RESUMEN

In this study, the researchers investigated the relationships between character strengths and ethical engagement in online faculty. One of the ethical duties for higher education faculty is to engage in effective teaching practices. As online higher education becomes increasingly popular, online faculty also bear this duty. Numerous studies have shown that character strengths cultivate ethical behavior. Hence, we sought to determine the relationship between character strengths and ethical engagement in online faculty. Specifically, we focused on intellectual character strengths, interpersonal character strengths, and emotional character strengths because of their relevance to online faculty's teaching practices. Through correlational analyses, we learned that interpersonal and emotional character strengths were positively and moderately related to ethical engagement, whereas intellectual character strengths were weakly related to ethical engagement. The findings of this study provide insight into online faculty's character strengths and ethical engagement. However, further research is needed to understand the role of character strengths and ethical engagement in promoting effective teaching practices in online higher education classrooms.
