RESUMEN

Reperfusion of ischemic tissues results in the formation of toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide anion, hydroxyl radicals, hydroperoxide, and peroxynitrite. ROS are potent oxidizing agents, fully capable of damaging cellular membranes by lipid peroxidation. In this study, we applied for the first time the in vivo electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)/spin probe and ex vivo EPR technique to provide direct evidence of ROS following experimentally induced small bowel ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The decay rate (spin clearance rate) was determined over the first 3 minutes at 6 hours after reperfusion. Decay rates in rats subjected to I/R injury were lower than those in the sham group. Superoxide scavenging activity (SSA) in rats subjected to I/R injury was significantly lower than that in the sham group. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that it is possible to detect the accumulation of ROS following experimentally induced small intestine I/R injury using an in vivo and an ex vivo EPR technique with a spin probe.

RESUMEN

Two brothers with multiple visceral artery aneurysms or dilatations and diffuse connective tissue fragility who did not have clinical features of Marfan syndrome are reported. One presented with retroperitoneal hemorrhage during angiography, and idiopathic medionecrosis was proved by resection of the aneurysms. These cases belong to the heterogeneous group of Marfan syndrome. The angiographical features (multiple dilation of visceral arteries) suggests fragility of connective tissue and is predictive of hazards during and after a catheterization and operation.

RESUMEN

We experienced six patients with resected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following interferon (IFN) therapy. Hepatitis virus C-RNA in polymerase chain reaction was positive in all patients prior to the IFN therapy. HCV-RNA became negative in two patients following IFN therapy, and was re-positive at the time of detection of HCC. In histological studies prior to the IFN therapy, pre-cirrhosis was diagnosed in four out of six patients and chronic active hepatitis 2B (CAH2B) in one according to the Europian classification. In non-cancerous portion of the liver, cirrhosis developed in five patients, and CAH2B in one. There was no significant correlation among the interval of HCC detection following IFN therapy, tumor size, tumor location, and histological findings. Patients should be carefully followed up by serum alpha fetoprotein levels or ultrasonography of the liver during and following IFN therapy.

RESUMEN

A 66-year-old man with a primary gastric choriocarcinoma is presented. The pre-operative diagnosis of the gastric barium examination and an endoscopy was an unusual gastric carcinoma in the antrum. At laparotomy, an abscess in the lesser sac that had developed by a tumoral penetrance was found. Thus a total gastrectomy and a lymphadenectomy with a reconstruction was performed. The resected specimen was found to be a Borrmann 1 type tumor, and a histological examination showed it to be a choriocarcinoma with a syncytiotrophoblast, that was immunostained by human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). The physical findings however, disclosed no tumor in the testis. The serum HCG was found to be 1,380 IU/l on the 7th postoperative day, then a pulmonary metastases appeared and progressed, and the patient died on the 22nd postoperative day.

RESUMEN

This paper describes an extremely rare case of the simultaneous occurrence of medullary and papillary thyroid carcinoma. A 31-year-old woman had two different coexistent tumors, i.e., medullary carcinoma (1.2 X 1.5 cm) adjacent to papillary carcinoma (2 X 1.8 cm) in the right lobe. The two different tumor cells revealed the characteristic features of each on the microscopic, histochemical and ultrastructural findings. Therefore, they must be derived from different origins. One lymph node contains metastases of mixed medullary and papillary carcinoma. Such an unusual case of concurrent medullary and papillary carcinoma seems to be interesting as to the histogenesis.
